Lara Petterson Interview
“Interview Narrative” “Seeking purpose, not perfection,” are the words an 18 year old female lives by. I would like to introduce everyone to one of my closest friends Lara Petterson. She recently graduated from Montgomery High School on May 26th, 2017, although she is relatively young she has a remarkable “coming of age” story to tell. The exact date was May 20th, 2016, this was the day she realized she was no longer this shy and outspoken girl anymore, but rather this bold and upstanding young women. I asked what happened that day and why that moment affected her the most and Lara said “It was the day of my first solo performance ever and in changed me in a way I never would have expected. I mean I had done many concerts before, but like …show more content…
“It made me realize I didn’t have to be perfect for me to have a purpose in this world. God didn’t make me or anyone else flawless, and from that day on I matured and got wiser, but it wasn’t an automatic switch it happened over the course of a couple months. I stopped caring what others thought of me, and started caring about what I thought of myself, which sounds so cliché, but really does have a meaning to it.” 9 months after that night Lara’s boyfriend gave her a promise ring and now they are expected to get engaged sometime in the near future and she says “I am completely and utterly happy now and no one can take that away from me.” Overall, Lara loved high school and would go back in an instant if she could. She had her ups and when she felt down she just remembered “regression to the mean,” which to her meant everything will eventually equal out and it will all be just fine. I really loved getting to talk to Lara Jane Petterson because there is so much more to her then meets the eye and it is great to have her as my role model in life. She has really taught me it is okay to be inauthentic because we all are, I just need to try my best to be authentic about my

When it comes to my career path I have always wanted to work with children but as I got older I developed a great passion for music. Music has always been around me, my dad was a big music buff. Since my father’s passing I feel like I have a special connection to him when I sing and listen to music. I’ve always been shy when it came to singing in front of an audience until I began going to Bethune-Cookman University. While I was enrolled there I joined a band and was singing in a local lounge every weekend and I loved it! Once I moved back home and enrolled in Georgia State I felt it was time to break out of my shell and truly begin to perform.…

I need to claim that this idea of her amazes me. From my previous musical experience, I’m pretty sure that music is a subject highly intimate for me. For instance, I usually have reluctance when I’m asked to sing or perform a song written by myself, even if I think it is a brilliant one. And this won’t happen if the song is someone else’s. In my opinion, music, especially my own music which I’m personally attached to, is an expression of my true self, and that identity and personal characteristics contained in it makes it so special that I won’t be willing to share it with others, unless it’s someone really close to me.…

I could make this essay as cliché as they come and talk about how being a single mother is so challenging, about how boot camp was so hard, or how a bad divorce changed my views on everything in my life… but instead, I’ll appreciate all of those things, and grasp my goals from a different challenge. That challenge is: loss. Some of my biggest goals were awknowledged through the death of my best friend, which in turn led me to this road at Paul Mitchell St. Louis. All of the above mentioned have shaped me, and for that I am grateful, however, the person who helped me realize my dreams of pursing art through cosmetology is no longer here, and with her is where my goals began, and my promise is fullfilled.…

While most teens transitioning to high school focused their mental energy towards worrying about their next exam and trying to fit in somewhere, mine included more hardships. I was more focused on trying to live comfortably with strangers, and not feeling like a burden to them. A lot of my energy went towards trying to be there for my little sister, someone I’ve never had a chance to build a good relationship with in the first place, in a time where I didn’t want anything to do with relationships. I was focused on things like learning to trust again, accepting the things that have happened in my life, and not shutting everyone out of my life. It was in this time frame that I turned to music for comfort.…

At the age of fourteen, I decided to audition for La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. I will never forget the lady at the front desk and how her eyes pierced through me like a fierce beast studying her prey. As I reflected on mothers’ encouraging words, the beast rudely yelled out my number and said, “Are you going in there dressed like that? Good luck, you’ll need it!" She then directed me to the auditorium where, by God’s amazing grace, I found favor with the judges and made it into La-Guardia High School of the Performing Arts. That victory was short lived due to my mother’s decision to relocate us for safety reasons.…

I’ve also enjoyed dedicating part of every summer to improve my musical skills by attending various camps, including Longlake Camp for the Arts, Eastern U.S. Music Camp at Colgate University and Interlochen Camp for the Arts, where I was just invited to return on the basis of last summer’s performance. While I know that there may be others with comparable or better talent, my passion serves as the constant motivation for me in music as well as other aspects of my life. For example, being a dedicated Honor Roll student, taking weekly Temple classes and performing community service has been important and demanding as well. Managing these priorities has taught me a lot about tenacity, friendship and balance.…
