Personal Narrative: My Marching Band Journey
Sweat drizzles down my skin as it exits my pores trying to cool my heated body. The blood rushes through my veins pumping blood with the consistent pounding of my heart. Every breath, every second, every action, every thought; I am standing where everything counts. Artificial turf and grass crumpled beneath my torn black shoes and the thick silence only cut by the timed chants from afar. This is the last moment I will stand here for this reason. This is the last moment I will stand here with my family. This is the last moment of my marching band career. Many will say that this was a special group of kids, others will say that this year was a show that was made to make it. I, on the other hand, will say that this was because of seven years of dedication.
I started this crazy journey in the sixth grade. I could even argue that it truly started when I was even younger. I entered this world unknowing of what the future held that one day they asked us what we wanted us to do in middle school. As a fifth grader I already knew. My older brother entered band only a year before and me being unconfident in my skills as a singer and bored by the alternative of the sitting in a standard classroom learning about how to be a leader through a teacher I naturally selected band as my elective. She must want to be a musician one may think, but as I mentioned in the beginning, that was my last moment. In the future I aspire to be a writer. I want to write the stories in my mind and share it to the world. Now how does that relate to band? The lessons I learned through my seven years stays with me in my daily life. To overcome obstacles, to work with others, to be determined, to be focused, to keep on going. These are the characteristics I believe are important in a writer and they are the characteristics I believe that will get me closer to my goal one step at a

When I drum I lose track of time, the different types of rudiments put together in all different orders makes me happy. When I try to get faster at drumming I play to all sorts of songs. I’ll get lost for hours drumming. Over time I hope to join some of the best marching groups in DCI and WGI. I hope to join groups like Matrix, Phantom Regiment, or Blue Coats. When I want to learn more I’ll ask people like Mr.Reynolds or Dave our percussion instructors. My favorite part about drumming is how with the right touch you can make a bunch of loud noises and crashes become into beautiful music. I would like to learn how to play the actual drum set instead of just the marching snare. Over my marching band career I played lot of different pieces and…

I served as a Drum Major for my school's marching band in my senior year of high school. During that time, I worked some of the qualities needed to be a good music director, such as my conducting, my ability to focus for a long time, and how to stay calm in stressful situations. The summer before my sophomore year I picked up the piccolo for marching, and later used in the concert setting. As well as the piccolo, the summer before my senior year I learned how to play the saxophone. These two experiences allowed me to put myself back into the beginner mentality and build myself up. Additionally, I participated in honors bands in which I learned how to comprehend music at an even faster…

Bands of America was very cool this year! The bus ride went very well, only problem being that every bump hit would rewind the movie that was playing. Once we got there everything went very smoothly. I got to help the band moms put the hat boxes in order! Warm ups there were a lot of jitters in the air it seemed, but not bad ones. Waiting to get on the field was extremely nerve wracking. But, once we got on the field everything seemed nice and mellow, like we were back on the field at home, it just had a different crowd and background. I feel really good about the performance. We did the best we could do and our best got us third in our class! Heading to the hotel and getting to lay down and rest was very nice and much needed. The food was…

There have been numerous times in my life where I’ve failed at something but there was one specific failure that really opened my eyes to what it really meant to fail. When I was in high school, I was in the band, my instrument of choice was the saxophone. While in the band it is required that you learn your sheet music before you attend any school event. This is to ensure that everyone is doing their absolute best and will make cuts to perform in every function the band was asked to participate. As I mentioned earlier, I played the saxophone and had always made cuts until one day our band instructor issued out new music. Being the person I am, I glanced at the music and said “I see no need for me to practice this, it’s so simple”. Later that…

Today, I was discovering garage band on my phone and looking at different loops and trying to figure out how to use everything. So far, garage band is not very difficult to use, but I find it a little limited on the phone, but I don't have a lap top to use, but I am still figuring that out.garage band is only on apple. Due to the fact, that I am a beginner I am definitely going to stick to using garage band, because I do like how it works because it's simple. I am trying to find some sort of online music production course, but I can't find any free ones so I may just have to watch some YouTube videos.…

When I first began my career in high school, I always wanted to make it into the elite band. I was never the best at my instrument, or outstanding enough to be noticed. I was a bare minimalist when it came to music; something I look back and laugh at about myself. Most of my peers had gotten into Wind Ensemble…

A time I wish I had spoke up as a leader was a couple of months ago when a past concert band member wanted to be apart of marching band. This individual had not attended band camp, which is a requirement if you want to be in marching band. The individual had family issues which prevented him from attending. Once school started he went to the first football with us and played the show music during class. I thought there would be an exception due to his circumstances of not being able to attend. Later I found out that leadership and our band director would decide whether or not he would be included in our show. His drill spot had been written, now it was just if he was committed and be able to. I thought he deserved a chance, so I wanted to help him. I figured our band director would too. But at the same time, our…

I have been waiting eagerly for graduation throughout my senior year, but now that graduation is only a few days away I am sad that my high school days are almost to a close. Band is going to be a major aspect of high school that I am going to miss immensely. For the past seven years I have been a member of the Hannibal Bands. I started out on clarinet but I later picked up the saxophone on the way. Even though I only spent three years in jazz band, I still enjoyed playing in the concerts and our trips to UMSL. However, it is concert band that I am going to miss the most. Concert band has always been my favorite both in middle school and high school. Marching band also had its moments of fun. There's no better way to spend your summer vacation…

During school I was involved in band since fifth grade and to this day band has been one of my favorite classes in school. When I started marching band in ninth grade, something I will never forget was being able to play in the Harvest of Harmony parade and compete at a state competition. From what I learned in band I have the privilege to be able to play the trumpet with the music group at my church the instruments I play are the piano, drums, and the trumpet. I’m also a student at the Career Pathways Institute since eleventh grade, I’m in the drafting course and was involved in making the plans for a Habitat House. Some leadership skills I have are that I’m the leader of the wind instruments in church which include trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone.…

Marching band is my life, or at the very least, it's the majority of my free time. In marching band, we have been trying to push ourselves physically to be in shape for this competitive season. We run laps every practice, rotate between different muscular exercises, and practice breathing fully – which is harder than it seems. At the beginning of the season, I began to struggle by about halfway into the first lap. I'd become light-headed a few sets into breathing exercises. I couldn't seem to keep up with the bar that was being set for us, however; I continued to push myself to – and occasionally beyond – my breaking point. After every practice, I was sore and exhausted, then it suddenly started getting easier. I’m now able to jog nearly two…

I went into the most influential audition of my vocal career completely blind. Third block on a dreary spring afternoon, the promise of Friday dangling in the air, the room frigid as I contemplated something that would change the course of my life as revealed in hindsight. Vocal Ensemble had been something I considered going out for, tossing around the notion in my head; however, it would require introverted self to put aside my fears of judgment, which was a battle that could never be won. My heart was pounding in sync with the ticking of the clock, time was running out; it was now or never. I was clueless as to what a scale should sound like, let alone the section of a piece I had never seen in my life and would have to conquer. At stake was making a fool of myself like never before in front of my favorite teacher and peers. Utter humiliation. But something inside me willed me to raise my hand and go for it. My personal philosophy is that I would rather try and fail than not try and be haunted by the ghost of what could have been; the pain of missed potential is worse than the pain of rejection. Trembling, I made my way to the front of the room, choking out my name for the recording before the scales began to play. Somewhere in the midst of the anxious turmoil in my mind, I heard a voice singing in perfect harmony with the piano. Slowly, I became self-aware, processing the fact that I indeed was singing;…

At the end of my verse it was straight silence, to me that means everyone was into it, to me that’s when I feel like I’ve done my job because during the silence there is bond that people had chills. To me if people are talking during your performance they’re not into it they rather be doing something else. It isn’t a good feeling at all. That’s when you know you haven’t done your job. After the silence of the crowed, I hear applause from every inch of the auditorium there is no better feeling. All that hard work paid off, and a good outcome and experience in the famous Carnegie…
