Identify basic hazards and describe ways of reducing risks in care setting

AO4 PART A

Kitchen risks and how it can be reduced

The kitchen is a very dangerous place when hazards are recognized, also care workers must make sure they keep children out of the kitchen in case they harm themselves.

Cookers are very dangerous especially when they left turned on. Cookers must always be turned off when not in use. Cooking pans when in use should have their handles turned inwards- not outwards as a child could pull the handle and burn themselves with boiling liquids.

Slippery floor can also be dangerous and cause accidents; care workers must always keep the floor dry and clean for their safety and the service users.
Things should not be left lying in middle of the kitchen floor as children could trip over them.

Knives should also be stored in a cupboard labelled clearly for the service users to see. Ideally they should be in a knife block.

Cleaning products should also be stored in a high shelf to keep children out of reach. All household cleaning bottles and medicines must have safety caps that children can’t open.

Sockets and wires must never be on the floor in case someone trips on it and hurts themselves. The cooker should never be open, this is because children can burn themselves and cause an accident.
