Hi my name is Annbella Da Firenze. I am 16. I live in Florence, Italy. It is my second year as a high school honors student, but not quite the average student. I mean I used to be, that is, until last year. My friends and I had found a long lost and forgotten strongbox. A piece of sheet music sat inside it. In English it is called Ti Heaco. Ti Heaco means “land of light and dark”. That night we found a way to open the strongbox. Afterwards I made a beeline straight for my beloved piano where I played Ti Heaco. That night as the girls and I slept we got kidnapped… by fairies. And no, I am not a loon! I mean little Tinkerbelle people came and kidnapped us.
Now here is how my story goes…. I had just enrolled in the school that would make my dreams come true!! I was a sophomore at Florence Academy of the Arts, a school for enthused and gifted musicians and other artists of sorts. I was accepted on scholarship for piano and violin. I am a composer of sorts. Once or twice I have been compared to Beethoven and Mozart, though I do not understand why because my music will never be as great as theirs. The only way for me to get into Florence Academy (F.A.) was on scholarship. This is because my parents just get by on what they have. Even though they do not have much money, they do what they can for me and support my passion and dreams to their fullest. On my first day, I met the high ranking Diva Queen, because she practically yelled “Hey, new girl! Go fetch me a double espresso latte, hold the foam!” This almost made me double over in a fit of laugher, because of how crazy she sounds. Once I knew I had a grip on myself I calmly said “I do not know who you are, and I will not take commands from you, so go get it yourself.” She stood there stunned. Once she regained her composure she hissed “I am Drina Poverina, and just so you know my daddy owns half of this school! So hold your

All those conversations make me feel down and discouraged. Months later I came SLCC to take a placement test, getting a low score put me into depression. My mom asked what was the matter. I told her that I might not continue my education. She was one who encourages me not to stop my education. I still remember how she confidently said to not worry about money and what other people would think about my score. My parents had high expectations for me, they changed me into a different person that I began to have courage, confidence, had such strong motivation for college, to pursue my dreams, and make my parents…

My name is Julia and I am in my early twenties, and I would have never have imagined that I would one day be going back to school to earn my college degree. My mother and fiancé encouraged me to pursue it, because of my love of art and talking to people, marketing and public relations and that it would be very expensive since I wanted to go to college in America but could not afford it at the time. They were very supportive from the start; my fiancé assisting me in writing notes on flash cards and giving me pop quizzes and my mom reminding me to complete homework assignments when I was busy doing household chores. To me, my life was going great as I advanced further toward my future goals.…

I wanted to be like all my other friends and play the clarinet, but instead I was chosen to play the flute. I did not understand at first why Mr. Peirce wanted me to play the flute, I thought it was complicated and would be difficult to function. We started by fingering and playing one note at a time repeatedly until each note was well played. Next, we started playing notes together to make sure we knew how to go from one to the other smoothly. Lastly, we learned scales, also known as playing the letters of the staff up then down. Soon after having these lessons of learning how to finger the notes and how to correctly blow in my mouth piece, I realized it was much easier then it looked. After a year, I was moved into the high school band. There were a small number of flutes, so we had to play very loud. We started by learning small songs. By playing a new song every day, I started to memorize the keys which made playing much easier. As the months passed Mr. Peirce placed a music piece in front of us known as “Bella’s Lullaby”. I was then ecstatic! Bella’s Lullaby was the piece played in one of my favorite movies, Twilight. It took us weeks to learn and another to perfect. After learning the piece I finally knew what it felt like to hear music speak. The piece was full of emotion including a lot of crescendo and decrescendo. Meanwhile, after finishing the song, Mr. Peirce thought that it should be played amongst an audience. We were to invite all our family and friends to what we called a concert. After playing the piece, along with other small pieces that we learned, we were given a round of applause. That night, Mr. Peirce awarded me with the “Most Improved…

School always came first, without a doubt. But, I let the move get to me. I let change get to me, and that shouldn’t have been the case.Doing my best is what I should have kept doing, but that wasn’t what happened.. My uncle is the person that made me realize that. He’d always call to check up on me, making sure I was doing the best that I could without any excuses. He called one day and asked how I was doing in my new school, and I told him the truth. His response was nothing I was prepared for. I was used to him telling me how proud he was of me, and that I’m going to set out to be the greatest at what I want to become. But, this phone conversation was not anything I thought it would be.He said, “Even though I hoped this wouldn't happen, I knew it would.” What did that even mean? Did it mean he was rooting for my failure? That talk sparked something in me. It reignited my passion for success. I started to get my act together and refocus on my grades, and what I wanted in life. Slowly my grades started improving, with each semester slightly getting…

One day, while I was laying peacefully on my bed, my mother came in with a letter from Florida A&M University. I didn't really want to speculate anything because a few days before I received a letter from another college saying that I wasn't accepted. Nevertheless I was still excited when I opened it and even more so when I read that I had been accepted. So without much hesitation I packed up and headed to Tallahassee. When I arrived my mother and I took care of registration and a plethora of things you have to manage as a new student. After all the hassles of college registration were completed my mother departed for home and I was left by myself to attend college. What a great feeling! Little did I know what I had on store for the next day, my first in college.…

Two years ago during my sophomore year of high school my parents did not believe that I would be able to juggle school work as well as be on the track team. I put it upon myself to prove them wrong, and I did. I went to school for 7 hours, then after school would practice with the track team until late hours in the day. Their lack of confidence that I would be able to keep my grades up as well as be in a sport prompted me to want to be on the track team even more. With their lack of confidence in me it led me to be constantly racing with the varsity runners and to get a 3.5 GPA, a huge improvement from my freshman year. I managed to make them believe that if I wanted to do something I could do it and do it well. Throughout the school year,…

I got serious, I went to school every day, did all my work, study for every test. I notice a huge difference. My GPA went up. I was finally satisfied. The problem was I wasn't sure what I wanted to do in the future. My parents wanted me to go into the medical field, but I felt like it wasn't for me. Science wasn't my favorite subject. Then during sophomore year and especially junior year. I realized what I wanted to do as a career. I noticed that I enjoyed cooking a lot and being in the kitchen. That's what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. One day I found out I had to switch schools. The new school I'm in Has a culinary program which I was very excited about. I asked them to place me in there. On the first day of school, I saw my schedule and I was very excited. I knew this is what I enjoy doing, but I didn't know if I wanted to continue it after high school. Through this program I learned that I do. In order for me to go to culinary school, I had to do my best in school because culinary school is not affordable. Especially for my family. How did this happen? At seventeen I entered my junior year of high school with a plan, I would graduate early, midyear at seventeen and head off to Kent State University, where only a select few, yes I was one of them, would be omitted into the architectural program. My father had always wanted to be an architect, but a civil war and its effects took a toll on my grandparent’s lives leaving my father responsible to help contribute to the family of six at an early age, so off into the work force he went, but he never let me forget that was his dream. So as a young girl I had a talent for drafting, drawing, and really enjoyed architecture as a focus in high school. My father couldn’t have been prouder. So as a Sophomore I made the decision to move on from high school as fast as I could and get into a really mature grown up life by graduating early, as a junior, and being accepted into a prestigious program with Kent State. My father was proud!…

Unlike the mainland, we do not have much facility, resources and a great economy. Despite of lacking needs, I received great education from great educating minds. It was my fortune to enroll in a school that provided musical education, a school concert band program. Even in a bad economy, our high school band (which I was in) got invited to the New York Music Festival and got a chance to play on the world’s most prestigious stage of Carnegie Hall. Unfortunately, because of band I had to give up my chance to take AP classes due to conflict in class schedule. I had to think it over twice by giving up something I love for another great opportunity, or keep this opportunity that was given to me and start fresh. I know it was a given chance for me, but then I chose band because by that time, band has become a big part of my life. Through my dedications in music I was able to enjoy doing what I love with my friends and family, traveling to places like New York, Guam, and London. If this was not my luck break, I don’t know what is.…
