Personal Narrative: How I Got To Salt Lake Community College
How I Got to Salt Lake Community College I always wanted to go to college growing up, but because of my family, along with my sisters and myself, were born and raised in a refugee camp in Nepal, I had a feeling that college was a dream that would not come true for me. In 2012, we came to Salt Lake City, Utah. The school I did was from 9th grade. After resettlement in the United States, my parents are still struggling to look after the educational future of me and my sisters. My family said if I could find a way to pay for college. I began to apply for many scholarships, which would help to fulfill my dream and desire. The high school I attend was Utah International Charter School. Senior year started and it was a great time in my life. I was going to graduate within four months. I started facing a variety of choices in choosing a college. I had a lot of …show more content…
All those conversations make me feel down and discouraged. Months later I came SLCC to take a placement test, getting a low score put me into depression. My mom asked what was the matter. I told her that I might not continue my education. She was one who encourages me not to stop my education. I still remember how she confidently said to not worry about money and what other people would think about my score. My parents had high expectations for me, they changed me into a different person that I began to have courage, confidence, had such strong motivation for college, to pursue my dreams, and make my parents

Even through I do not want to be an admissions counselor I do want to help people in the way Timber has and does so this is the reason I interviewed him twice. Admissions counselors have to be very well educated about the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus in all aspects: the colleges, majors, student-to-teacher ratio, campus resources, financial aid, and tuition and fees, and much more. Not only must admissions counselors know about the schools that they are representing, but they also must know a little about the schools that they may be visiting for a college fair, or schools that might be coming to visit the campus. High school students and even sometimes middle 8th grade students have questions about the campus, and admissions counselors must be prepared to present that information to those students. But above all, they need to offer an environment that welcomes all and produces more than just initial numbers, maintaining the students in every aspect of attending college, from academics to personal life, emphasizing the counselor aspect of administration counselor. UWO Admissions Counselor Terrence “Timber” Smith goes above and beyond in his job duties to create something like magic between “these four walls.” His influence and drive for an individual to reach for the skies and pull down a…

I was informed by an admission counselor that my high school diploma is not accredited but I got accepted at Palm Beach State College and currently taking courses at Palm Beach State College. However, having listened to my brother speaks of his recent years at Florida Atlantic University and his love for Full Sail, the two schools hold a certain mystical quality to me. Knowing that the type of education I will receive at FAU does not fit who I am neither what I am looking and the dreams I flourish for; Full Sail has long been the cynosure for my desired collegiate experience. I have always held the school, students, faculty and alumni with respect and admiration.…

As I embarked on my college journey I was very eager to get away from the familiarity of New Jersey. I decided to head south and attend East Carolina University. To me this was a huge culture shock; the people, the fashion, the accents, the food, and the pace of life were all extremely different. I went through a long period of homesickness and just missing the little things of the northern lifestyle. Despite my everlasting discontent, I decided to stick it out and hope for the best. I joined a sorority and got involved around campus through intermural sports and other activities. This still, however, has failed to help me feel a sense of comfortableness. I came to this university as an intended nursing major and as I took multiple science related classes and struggled through Chemistry, I came to…

If someone would have told me that a small university in Alabama called Samford University would completely change my life, I would think they were crazy. I was apprehensive on my first tour at Samford. My tour guide was Mary Kate Thomas, and she was so sweet. Her description of life at Samford seemed completely genuine. Half way through, I felt as if God were nudging me and saying, “Corey, this is where I want you to be. This is where you will be happiest and closer to me.” As soon as we got home that day, I began filling out the Samford application and submitted the application a few weeks after. Two days later, I received my letter of acceptance, and my journey began. That August, Connections Weekend set the stage for what I knew would be…

I’ve attended Pius XI High School for three years now; I still have not found the culture of a catholic whole person education there. Beginning high school I was seeking a place that would prepare me to contribute to the world. Looking to evolve as a leader and also obtain academic excellence through firm guidance and also practice a strong faith tradition. I am sad to say that Pius XI High School was not able to provide these characteristics to me. The experience has been eye opening. However, change is necessary for me to enter the world as an adult and contributor to the community. Being able to take part in a community that has a rich foundation, somewhere that will give my family and me peace…

However, not everything was always peaches and cream. The good does come with the bad. Although I immensely relished learning psychology, I can say without a doubt what I least liked about my learning experience was all the stress that I felt. College is supposed to be no cakewalk, I know, but the stress certainly took me by surprise. I didn’t expect to have so much due in such a small period of time. For example, I recall near the end of the 3rd semester at community college I had three major papers due all within a few days of each other. Although I had completed most of the work for each paper, it still didn’t feel like I would complete them in time. It just didn’t feel like there were enough hours in the day to do everything that needed…

On May 31, 2014, I woke up like any other day yet significantly more excited. I languidly dragged myself out of my comfortable bed, resigning to the bathroom to perform my typical morning rituals: shower, do my hair, makeup, and getting dressed. When I was completing the process of getting ready, it hit me hard that I was graduating today. At that point I began thinking about how I would never see my friends every day, no more soccer games to play, and no more doing my standard school actives. When I start college in the fall, I am going to have to learn a whole new routine. When I woke up from my thoughts, the time had come to make a beeline for Samford University for graduation.…

I want to be one of those people who are successful and I know that sometimes they have to overcome many obstacles along the way, but at the end they gain what they want and they meet their goals. One of my goals is to be able to have the privilege to go to college and be successful in a career of my choice. Nobody in my family has gone to college and I would like to be the first one attending a college or a university. My parents have always encouraged me to go to college and choose the career or job I like and not be like them where they don't have a choice and they have to work in whatever job even if they don't like…

One of the biggest bumps in the road during my academic carrier was during junior year when I got denied acceptance into NHS. I received a short black and white letter stating that I did not have a high enough GPA and I had “weak course load”. Keep in mind the requirement for acceptance was a 3.5 GPA and at the time I had a 3.6 GPA. I was simply outraged and discouraged. I talked with my mother shortly after, she told me she never got accepted into NHS either; I was not going to accept rejection. I began to ask some teachers about what they thought, the majority sided with me on questioning why I did not get in. So I wrote a six paragraph reply asking for a better explanation as to why I was rejected, I had also stated how I met the requirements for every…

Ever since I can remember I wanted to go Indiana University. My love has grown for them progressively over the years. Also ever since I can remember I’ve had a love for sports. So I’d love to go through the athletic training program so after graduation I can help any athlete of any sport stay at their best ability and help them stay healthy. After I go through the program I plan to go to a high school somewhere to start out and be the athletic trainer there. If a job opens up at a university or even some variation of a pro sports team I plan to take that. Either way I just want to help athletes.…

During the first semester of senior year, my father lost our only means of income. At this point, I had to provide for myself when it came to personal expenses. After obtaining a job, it was hard for me to balance my schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and community service. Due to my circumstances, I lost focus on the importance of school and my grades did not reflect my fullest capabilities. Everything became stressful and the only time I had became devoted to sleeping. This also made it very difficult when it came to applying for colleges and scholarships. Since I am a first generation student, I had to learn the processes on my own with the help of my college counselor. Since my freshman year at Metro Academic and Classical High School I was afraid that the courses would be too rigorous and I would not be a successful student. This…

I came into college thinking that I would not have any difficulties in any of the classes that I had to take and I would breeze through college like I had done in high school. I was taken back as to the sheer amount of work and hours that needed to be dedicated in my classes in order to be successful. My first semester in college has taught me more about myself than I could have ever learned…
