Personal Narrative: My First Tennis Challenge Match
One failure that has greatly affected me to this day was the first tennis challenge match of freshman year. In order to establish seed rankings, we had to play eight-game matches against each other. The concept of challenge matches was not new to me, but nonetheless my experience proved futile in the face of my opponent. This match had taught me the importance of hard work, consistency, and discipline, but to attain these values, I had to travel a difficult path that destroyed my pride and confidence.
I was cocky going into the match, because I had played and beaten Jacob, my opponent, beforehand. I assumed that the skinny, lanky sophomore was nothing more than a pushover that I could dispatch easily. The match started out with my serve, another boost to my confidence, and progressed smoothly as I quickly won the first game. But I quickly realized that Jacob would not go down so easily. He sprinted, lunged, and chased after every single ball no matter what speed or power I put on each shot. He patiently persisted, meticulously striking each shot to be not fast but instead consistent- my biggest weakness. I began to panic. I started to hit balls harder, causing me to make more mistakes, and taking more risks in order to end the grueling rallies that ran me dry. I tried everything that I could think

I found that my grades greatly improved, having achieved a 4.0 GPA for the first time in my life, along with my clarinet skills when my band director elected me to perform my first solo at the spring concert. I finally began to see the fruits of my training throughout my life and I realized that to truly excel time, effort, and unwavering commitment must be implemented. That single match had transformed me into the disciplined, hardworking person that I am today, and with the things that I have learned, I continue to improve

It’s the last game and we are warming up for the game. We were feeling super confident because we had just won the game before that. But as we see the other team we lost all of our confidence because they were all like 6’3 or taller. After warmups coach told us who was pitching and he said me. I was like what the heck I’m gonna get killed by these monsters. I was a squirmy as a warm cause I was excited to prove myself. As I’m warming up to pitch on the mound I was thinking of what pitches I was gonna throw. When the ump said batter up I knew that I was gonna have to pitch the ball low in the strike zone. The first pitch in the game I accidentally left the ball up and the kid whacked to the fence in the air. That was as fast as race cars start.…

I think that I owe most of my improvement the BRHS Marching Band. Being a part of an activity that demands you to be the best you can and then some made me feel like I was not a new student. Marching Band taught me a lesson that most people learn when they get to college, time management. “If you are on time, you are late, if you are early you are on time, and if you are late, get ready to run laps.” I have this posted on my bedroom door to remind me that time management is a key life lesson. Balancing the demanding schedule of band and school taught me to not procrastinate. It has also showed me that when you work at something really hard, there is not one thing that can stand in your way when you reach to grab it. I still remember the moment I heard the announcer say the name of our school at the state competition. I can’t describe the excitement I had when I heard that we beat…

The vibration of the basketball hitting the ground is the best feeling the world. Light was shining through the humongous windows onto the worn out gym floor like a flash light. The other teams jerseys were as red as a rose...and as red as the blood pouring out of my mouth. Thats a good story. I am here to tell you about it.…

“Beep…beep…beep…” yelled my alarm notifying me that it was finally time for me to raise out of bed. Even though it was only six o’clock in the morning, my mood instantly brightened when I looked at my phone calendar and instinctively remembered that today was my final first volleyball game of the season. Quickly, I stumbled out of bed to go brush my teeth and begin getting ready for what would end up being my last day of playing volleyball.…

Although I have changed a lot since I was accepted into my camp's choir, my experience with the effort to get in has had a profound effect on me. I learned the importance of tenacity and determination. I realized that in order to succeed I should set plausible goals and stay committed to accomplishing them even if things do not fall into place right away or I fail on my first try. Also, I learned not to be afraid of failure and instead to view it as a chance to improve and spur my future efforts for…

Slowly, I kneel down to tie my shoe for the fourth time this match. The sweat creeps down my face as if mocking me in saying that I should have taken the cardio sessions more seriously. At this point I was doing everything I could just to keep my body from collapsing to the ground. The feel of the sun beating down makes me wonder if it is purposely driving all of its energy to sap mine. Glancing up across the court I see my water bottle filled with mountain dew. At that very moment the sugary, citrusy scent flows through my nose increasing my thirst even more. I could care less if everyone knows that my shoe really wasn’t untied, and they did. This was too much, the constant sprinting back and forth while trying to place the ball in that perfect spot. Why would anyone participate in something like this willingly? Somehow I always pick the best hobbies. It’s been about a minute now and my hand tightens around the sticky tape of my racket as I use every ounce of energy I have left to stand to my feet. Standing there my weight now shifts back and forth between my tired and blistered feet. She serves. My fast reflexes allow me to throw my racket to where the ball is going and my jaw tenses as I brace myself for impact. The vibrations tingle up my arm as I strategically swing through the ball at the perfect speed and angle. Well, almost perfect. The disappointment of another return into the net. A smirk on my opponent’s face shows her attempt at hiding the satisfaction she has in…

So we kinda knew we were gonna win, but we didn’t want to jinx it and lose. We had a fantastic game and won 14-1. I had a total 0 plays out in the outfield and that sure was a whole lot of fun. I went 3-4 when I was batting which is ok but I could have gone 4-4, Since I wasn’t seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand I was late on the ball and was all in all, a bad game. Our season was doing really well and ended really poorly, It ended by us losing 9-1, We were not happy nor were we upset that we lost. but we understood we needed to get better. Whereas High school baseball is gonna be way better cause we don’t play the same teams we play easier teams. Which is nice because we will win much easier and not have any competition. The high school team consistently wins regionals which is cool and they have been to state a couple…

I believe playing a sport that you love is fun, but at the same time winning is more fun. For me I figured this out when I was ten years old. I was playing a pickup game at the RAC and my brother hit the game winning shot. I was so happy because I gave him the assists. Then it came to me like I bolt of lightning that playing basketball is fun when you win. Ever since that moment it helped me perform to my full potential.…
