Is Odysseus a Hero?

“Hero” Writing Assignment Would somebody still be considered a hero even if they had help with every problem he or she faced? Well, in the classic Greek novel The Odyssey, written by Homer, the main character, Odysseus, goes through a long journey in which he faces many challenges. When he originally left his true love, Penelope, to fight in the battle of Troy, he never expected that his expedition to return home would take 20 years. During that time period, several suitors tried to prove themselves to Penelope to take Odysseus’ place. Odysseus, on the other hand, faces the ultimate test: staying loyal and faithful not only to his wife, but to the men and women who helped him return home as well. Odysseus obtains many traits of a hero, like confidence and bravery. However, he overcame the obstacles that he faced with help from various g-ds and g-desses, which therefore disqualifies him as a true hero. Athena in particular, helped Odysseus with a lot of things when he initially arrived on the land of the Phaeacians. She not only altered Odysseus’ appearance to make him seem more g-d like, she planted in confidence Nausicaa’s heart so she wouldn’t run away at Odysseus’ lack of clothing. On page 172 of the Odyssey, it says,
After Nausicaa lent him some clothing and gave him some food, Odysseus walked (alone) towards the main town. When he reached the city, Athena disguised herself, again, as a little girl who pretended to guide him to the palace. She then set up a magical mist to shield Odysseus in order to protect him from other men in the town (stranger = danger). Without all the help he received from Athena and various g-ds and goddesses, all besides Poseidon, Odysseus wouldn’t have had the chance to return home. Not to mention, that he never thanked them for what they did. A true leader would be brave in any situation; if they faced a challenge, they would try to do it on their own before taking advice and/or accepting help. Even though Odysseus is courageous and loyal, without the help he received, he wouldn’t have made it home safely. In my opinion, Odysseus is not a hero, just a good leader.

Athena is pivotal in assisting Odysseus by aiding in his struggle to return home and in Ithaca. She supports Odysseus throughout the epic. Athena first helps by explaining Odysseus’ predicament to others on Mount Olympus. Athena begs “Olympian Zeus” to “care for him in [his] lofty heart” (Homer 1.72,73). Athena knows that if she is able to convince the other gods and goddess to be on Odysseus’ side it would positively impact his…

Athena continues to show her care giving side after pleading with her father Zeus to free Odysseus which he does after he sent Hermes to tell Calypso to free him and she does which shows that she has a sense of decency despite her sexual ambitions to keep him on her island. After building a raft and sailing out to sea, he continues to receive bad treatment from Poseidon after he conjured up a storm that knocked him down into the water. Watching him being tossed like a rag doll around in the sea, a goddess named Ino, like Athena, showed a caring side for protecting Odysseus by providing him a scarf and with it he abandoned his raft and belongings and “dove headfirst into the sea, stretched his arms and stroked for life itself” (Book V, 411-412). While swimming toward the shore, he also had assistance from Athena who calmed Poseidon’s storm and stopped the winds by “commanding them all to hush now, go to sleep” (Book V, 423) and eventually he would make it toward land.…

Heroes should be helped but there is a limit to it. Throughout the poem, that limit was crossed for Odysseus. Help of the Gods was always available for him whenever he was in a difficult situation. For example Odysseus had left Calypsos’ Island and he was in the middle of the sea when storm came and broke his raft. Help was accessible when White Goddess, Ino, offered him her immortally charmed veil that kept Odysseus safe and took him to shore (V, 348). If Ino had not been there to help Odysseus he would never have reached shore. The pattern of goddess coming to Odysseus’ rescue is seen throughout the whole poem. Because of this, I did not really saw him as heroic a he had been portrayed.…

You may be asking yourself, how can he be a bad leader if he is the reason they won at Troy and got home? Well the answer is that it took them 10 years to get back to Ithaca. It took long because of Odysseus doing horrible things such as telling Polyphemus his name. Because of Odysseus’ doing this, its causes him and his men to be a target for the gods. Another example of this is when Odysseus receives a bag of wind from Aeolus and he does not communicate with his men and causing them to think that it is a bag of riches. So you can not blame them for being curious because after all it is in our nature as human…

Maya Angelou, an author, poet, and a civil rights activist once said: “I think a hero is any person really intend on making this a better place for all people.” But seeing as this poet says “any person,” that person can be of human or even superhuman characteristics so long as their deed is right. His intelligence and strength allow him to get out of difficult situations, but his one flaw that was bringing Odysseus down was his hubris. The whole time Odysseus was trying to get home, he had many opportunities to display these traits, for example giving Polyphemus the wine to put him asleep showed his intelligence because this was the best way to injure the giant while causing the least amount of death. When he hung from the fig tree and waited for his ship, or being trapped in Polyphemus’s cave are all obstacles that he had to overcome. Odysseus overcame these obstacles because he is a hero and heroes overcome problems that come their way. Odysseus is not a superhero however, he is just a normal person that overcomes mistakes and problems that he is faced with. Everyone knows about superheroes and heroes and that they share similar principles except anyone can be a hero, but no one can be a…
