How Odysseus Became a Hero

What is needed to transform from a man to an Epic hero?
Odysseus’s homeland is Ithaca and he is also the King of Ithaca he is called to fight in the Trojan War, he is away from his family for about twenty years he gets through his problems with the help from the gods especially Athena.
Odysseus is an Epic hero because he showed intellect, fortitude, and wisdom. Odysseus was a very cleaver and intelligent he knew when to attack and when to hold back. If Odysseus and his men would have killed Cyclops I his cave they would died as well because there was a bolder in the exit of the cave (book 9 lines 289-295). Odysseus told Cyclops that his name was nobody to trick the other Cyclopes into thinking that there was nothing wrong. (Book 9 lines 360-362).
I believe that Odysseus had mental and physical strength and it helped he become an Epic hero. He was away from his family and his Kingdom for twenty years and did not lose hope on going back home. Odysseus spoke to his mother while he was in the Land of the dead I really think that took mental strength to do. Odysseus knew that six of his men would die , he did not tell them because he knew that they would stop rowing in that direction found in book 12 lines (680 -690).
Without wisdom Odysseus an Odysseus and his men would have been dead when they faced the Cyclops. He thought his cleaver plans through. Odysseus and his men gave the Cyclops wine so he would become drunk found in book 21 lines 9 lines (342-345). Odysseus offers swineherd and cowherd wives, cattle and homes built near his as a thank you for them helping them and being on his side even when he wasn’t there. With its larger-than-life plot twists, The Odyssey is a classic representation of an epic in literature. With that understood, it is no surprise that the main character of the story helps to define an epic hero. A character must express certain qualities to be considered such. Strength, courage, and nobility are almost basics. Cleverness was a bonus. Odysseus possesses many characteristics and qualities that make him a true representation of an epic hero. Odysseus has been through a lot in the past twenty years and has never gone crazy He needed all those elements to be a great leader and Epic hero.

One would think Odysseus has many epic hero traits, but he also has many traits that are not heroic. There are many examples of his heroic qualities. Something that shows loyalty is when he says, “So we moved out, sad in the vast offing, having our precious lives, but not our friends.” This shows that Odysseus is loyal because talking about not having his friends anymore and being with his men. He also has strength. “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under the rowing benches…” shows this because it takes strength to tie three men down to a ship. When he shows courage, he says “We beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ship: as for myself I took my twelve best men and went ahead.” in which one would notice Odysseus had the courage to go see who the enormous man was when he reached Cyclops Island and told his men to watch the ship for him.…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. His intelligence and strength allow him to get out of difficult situations, but his one flaw that was bringing Odysseus down was his hubris. The whole time Odysseus was trying to get home, he had many opportunities to display these traits, for example giving Polyphemus the wine to put him asleep showed his intelligence because this was the best way to injure the giant while causing the least amount of death. When he hung from the fig tree and waited for his ship, or being trapped in Polyphemus’s cave are all obstacles that he had to overcome. Odysseus overcame these obstacles because he is a hero and heroes overcome problems that come their way. Odysseus is not a superhero however, he is just a normal person that overcomes mistakes and problems that he is faced with. Everyone knows about superheroes and heroes and that they share similar principles except anyone can be a hero, but no one can be a…
