Internship In Congress
The past few summers, my parents have made it a point to let me intern at a certain place to widen my knowledge, and to learn about practical things in life. This summer, I had my internship in Congress.

The start of my internship in Congress began on May 29, 2017. The first thing I did that day was to accompany my father to a Gathering for Civil Liberties, an event hosted by Senator Risa Hontiveros. The purpose of the event was to talk about Martial Law, which the President had declared due to the recent attack on Marawi. There were many influential people who attended the event, and shared their opinions on what the next course of action should be.
While they were discussing and sharing their ideas, I was able to learn many new things.

Following, students engaged in an internship breakout session with Dr. Beaupre and PPP Alumni Adam Clark. It is highly encouraged that in the summer between the end of their sophomore year and the fall semester of their junior year, students take on internships, whether that be locally in Cincinnati, back in their hometowns, or in the nation’s capital Washington D.C. The sophomores found this session particularly beneficial because it got students thinking about their summer plans, while allowing them to brainstorm the types of internships that best fit their skills, values, and varying interests.…

All in all, I think that we’ve all expanded out knowledge of these great topics. From my perspective, I think I have benefitted the most from reading my classmates posts and responding to them. Everyone had different thoughts and opinions that may have changed due to others. A couple of times, my perspective changed on certain topics due to others well thought out responses. I think I can say that I enjoyed this online course more than many of the courses I’ve taken in an actual…

The opportunity to be a part of the Sophomores-Serve program is one of the most exciting that I have encountered. As someone anticipating a career in medicine I am very interested in integrating science and community service. My academic experience thus far has centered on lectures where it can be hard to take what is being taught and apply it to the outside world. With this program, I believe I will be able to not only learn about something I am interested in, the food environment, but also improve my ability to practically use my knowledge to improve the surrounding world.…

My cousin, Kim picked me up one weekend and took me to Philadelphia for the weekend. While I was in Philadelphia we went to museums and I tried an authentic Philly cheese steak. I was overwhelmed with excitement that my cousin came to pick me for the weekend that it was my favorite part of my six weeks. Although the program was supposed to be a glimpse of what college is going be like in the fall, that the experience was a terrible example of what college would be like. I learned what people I want to be around and what people I do not while I was in Maryland. Although this is not the type of program that I want to do in the future however, I learned that I am capable of making decisions without the help of my…

The best part of the internship was shadowing the principal. Like we model for our students, it was good to see a typical day for a principal. While I was not able to shadow for a whole day, I was able to select items that I wanted to participate in. These included attending Board Meetings, Parent Teacher Association, Intervention and Referral Services, IEP/504’s, budget planning, hiring, discipline and supervising sports events. These activities showed what events a principal participant in when they are not observing teachers or attending workshops.…

To me my backyard was a forest to discover and with a magnifying glass and my Rockhound Guide I would set off each day to discover something new. When I was in eight grade I made the wrong choice of picking a baking class, after the fist semester I transferred into an all boys robotics class. Where I quickly climbed to the top and created things like a dog who did seven different tricks to a classic battle bot that conquered everyones else’s robot. I fell in love with biology my freshman year and quickly gained a knack for organic chemistry. Then my sophomore year I took chemistry which I hope to take again my senior year as an AP course. Now that Im a junior and taking AP biology, I've found a liking in forensic biology and Im actually turn our lab into a real life mock crime scene where I will show fellow classmates how to run DNA in electrophoresis and test blood samples. Now if I were to get this internship it would make huge difference in my science career. First it would give me the hands on experience I want in a lab. It would also further my love for science, because I would hope to do research on DNA, specifically…

Constituency careers pursue the goal of reelection, while Washington careers pursue the goals of influence in the House and the making of good public policy. When a House member is at the stage of a constituency career, they will most likely leave their families at home, and only be thinking about the goal of reelection. First-term members get to go home more frequently then their senior colleagues, however, most have not been a congressman yet. The first two years are spent getting reelected while the last two years are spent getting a district so they can be reelected. What is meant by congressman is being able pursue goals that go above and beyond just getting reelected. This seems like a viscous cycle due to the fact that a House member’s…

Internships are an important part of the growing experience for an individual; they can help determine what one would like to pursue for a future career, and what one would not like to do. My time interning with the National Museum of Civil War Medicine was overall an amazing experience. I now possess an overall understanding of the tasks of a collection manager must deal with on a day-to-day basis. I tackled a multitude of projects while working with Kate McDaniel, the projects consisted of dealing with loan documents, photographing artifacts, designing and creating two display cases, and researching non-accessioned objects. Through this variety of tasks, I have enjoyed some more than others and know how small non-profit museum differ from the larger ones. I loved interning at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, I met amazing individual and learned an immense amount about the field of curation, which I original knew very little about.…

During my senior year, my high school guidance counselor would send out emails to my class with information on available internships, scholarships, community service, and other academic opportunities. This particular internship was for students who were interested in the engineering field. At that time in my life I was not sure what I wanted to study or be when I grew up. Although I still do not know for sure, I had considered engineering to be a likely possibility and so I took a stab it. It was strange because at that time I did not like to do more work than I had to, yet I took the extra step of getting myself an internship which I felt was a bold and adult thing to do. It never occurred to me before this time in my life that I had to take responsibility for and look at my…
