How Is Ancient Rome Different From Their Customs In Modern Times
When traveling to ancient Rome there are major differences between their customs and modern customs. In order to fit in, certain aspects of their life need to be followed; if they aren’t followed then it is possible to stand out and look out of place. Five major life aspects that need to be followed are Housing, Health care, Trade and travel, Recreation, and Family life. Ancient housing in Rome is has some major differences between housing in modern times. While in modern times, it is normally custom to throw leftovers into the trash whereas in ancient Rome they threw their leftovers such as bones onto the ground to be picked up by the slaves. Furthermore, music was commonly played by the slaves; modern houses normally use stereoplayers or phones for music. Slavery was a large part in Roman life. In addition, houses had very bad plumbing making them less sanitary in the bathrooms. Health care was another key part to Rome’s daily life. Modern day uses science to explain illness but when in Rome they thought that gouds caused most illness’ due to the strong belief in many gods. An apple a day keeps the doctor away is a modern saying where as in ancient Rome they had to have a ration of garlic everyday because they thought it promoted better health. Seating in modern day theatres and sports events is by ticket whereas the seating in ancient Rome was always by class. Most people went and sat in their designated area in order to watch Theatre and musicals. Much like modern day musicals and theatre are still big parts of life. Additionally, Romans would watch others die for entertainment whereas we prefer to watch a movie so be ready for fights.
