How Computer Hardware Has Evolved

My father was one of the first computer hardware engineers. He joined the Air Force in 1980 and worked on all the computers that ran communications with the fighter planes. My earliest memories were of my father taking me to work and the load hum of the computers as they ran. He took me through dozens of rooms to his office and showed me a part that he had just fixed. It was a board that was at least two feet long and a foot wide. He pointed to a black spot on the board and said, “I found it in 15 minutes. “ He had a triumphant smile on his face. “When it went out” he said, “my coworkers looked for eight hours and couldn’t find it.” Then he leaned in close and whispered, “Follow your nose.” I then smelled the board. This is one of my strongest memories of my father and the earliest computers.
I graduated high school in 1998 and joined the Air Force in dreams of being like my father. Due to my color vision I wasn’t able to work on computers but I was able to buy my own computer in 2001 or 2002. Dell sent me my first window into the digital world. This Dell was a cheap $1500. What hardware it had, I don’t even remember. When I got the computer, it was all based on price. The computer had Windows 98 with Word and to tell you the truth, I didn’t even use the computer that often. Just to look something up on the World Wide Web or to write a paper for work.
I just bought my fourth computer a few weeks ago, for $500. My mind was blown on the speed, memory, and RAM for this beast of a computer. See the computer I was using I got in 2007 for $1700. It had 4GB of RAM, the processor speed was way too slow for what I needed. It was cheaper to buy a new computer with Windows 8 then try to upgrade the hardware and software of my old computer. In 2005 I got a laptop for $1200 so I was ready to spend $2000 when I got the computer

An author wouldn’t need much of power and storage. A decent surface tablet computer or basic laptop would be fine for their needs. A SSD would be perfect for faster documents to load when getting that spurt to jot down what is in their head before they lose it. And a surface tablet would execute their means of travel and give them the ability to really write anywhere they please. As well a nice decent sized laptop, but I believe the surface tablet would be much more variable.…

It seems that the major question going around right now is, “Are you a Mac or a PC?” There are many differences between these two completely different types of computers. Many people claim they would never buy a virus infested PC and would stick by their Macbook until death do them part; while others swear by their PC and are disgusted by any other type of computer. There are many types of Personal Computers but the only company you can buy a Mac from is Apple. While the Mac vs. PC controversy continues to bubble both types of companies continue to strive for the perfect computer to offer their consumers.…

Once I knew what components and new hardware I would need I began researching all the new products in the market. I realized my once top of the line components were outdated but, being poor I had to make due with my salvaged parts. The list of components needed was concise, but rather expensive. I needed a new motherboard, central processing unit, processor cooler, and a new desktop computer tower case. I had to wait and save another paycheck to buy all the necessary components.…

When I compare my computer system to a state-of-the-art computer system I find that there are several similarities and differences. Both computers have the same make up, although the state of the art system offers more storage and memory capabilities. Cost is also a big difference as state of the art computer systems are much more expensive due to what they can offer. Along with the technology that comes along with a state of the art system, is an ever changing industry. Trying to stay on top could result in loss of pertinent data and a financial burden. I purchased my desktop less than a year ago and it has offered me everything that I needed for school and personal use.…

I really do love my Dell computer and don’t really want to get anything new unless I had to. If I did have to get a new device I would buy a desktop for sure. I would want one that is easy to use, simple, and to the point. I really dislike all that fancy stuff. I don’t understand it and I’m comfortable with what I know. There are a few gadgets out there such as the ipad but I really don’t like touch screen stuff. I like touching and the feel of the key board and a mouse.…

I have always been fascinated with computers going back to when I was in elementary school. I was intrigued by the capabilities of technology, and after acquiring my own desktop computer I began to explore the vast combinations and possibilities of an operating system. Since I had yet to become connected to the internet, I spent my time teaching myself what each program and setting could produce. Much of my early knowledge of computers stemmed from my curiosity, and by fourth grade I was known as the “go to technician,” helping the teachers connect their laptop to the projector or other similar tasks. When our school added a new high-tech computer lab I was ecstatic, and in this lab I learned even more, adding to my existing knowledge. My reputation at school grew, and every year increasingly more teachers called on my assistance, even following me through middle school and high school. My interest continued, and for my eighth grade career fair project I built a fully running computer from spare parts, without a metal enclosure or hard drive, using a flash drive to boot and run a Linux based operating system. As a senior I work with my school’s IT Department as a student intern: solving problems, completing research, and maintaining the functionality of our equipment. I find helping others with my skills very rewarding and this further drives…

While I have many needs for a computer, I think there are a few things that I would need in a computer if I were to shop for one today. First, I would need the Home premium version of Microsoft Windows 7, so that I can use Windows Media center to play music and watch videos and stream Netflix through my computer. Another important item I would have to have is Microsoft office 2010. I would of course need this for typing papers for school and completing homework assignments for this class, I would just need the standard version. For leisure, I like to use the computer to play video games and record music. So I would like a computer with a good video card, and enough RAM to support recording programs with linear and non linear editing programs (AcidFX, Cool Edit, etc.) It would also have to come with Norton Antivirus so that I can help protect my files while using the computer. I would also like a good sized flat screen monitor, a printer and basic speakers. I set a budget of $1,200 for my new PC, but less would be preferred.…

My first encounter with computers was at the age of 6. My father was a businessman who had to use computers to manage his finances. However, in our small village, computers were considered to be a fancy machine afforded only by the rich and my access to it was highly restricted. This only piqued my interest further and was one of the first indicators that I definitely wanted to work in a field related to them.…

Many people do not know how, or even when computers were first made. Even before the first electronic computers were made, many people believe that computers started with the abacus, a simple counting device. The abacus is believed to have been built in Babylon in the fourth century B.C. The "First Generation" of computers started in the very late 1930's. These computers were grotesquely slow, colossal in size, created much heat, used hundreds of kilowatts of power, and were about as reliable as a used up match (www.pbs.org). As time went on, these computers evolved from using vacuum tubes to transistors. Transistors mark the beginning of the "Second Generation" of computers in 1947. Unfortunately, the 2nd Generation did not advance as much as most people hoped, but eventually, the "Third Generation" was brought about by the invention of integrated circuits in 1958. Integrated circuits replaced transistors, and many computer languages came out in this time. Many more computer companies were born during this time, and eventually this led to personal computers for everyday use. Microprocessors introduced the beginning of the "Fourth Generation" and a time where computers were in almost every house. (Wiley, 1985)…
