Homecoming Cheerleaders
As a student and cheerleader at Otterbein University, homecoming weekend was an incredibly special weekend for me. There were so many things that brought this 100th anniversary of homecoming together like: the parade, the kids with stuffed Cardy’s, the food trucks, tree planting, and most importantly the football game.
Before game days we have a special tradition to march grove street dancing to the band to get hyped up. This being the homecoming game, the cheer team, dance team, band, sororities/fraternities were all in this parade to celebrate. The cheerleaders were close to the front of the parade so once we got to the end of the parade, we were able to line the street and watch the rest of the parade go by.

Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing a comedy by Kathryn Walat, Theatre Geeks vs. Zombie Cheerleaders performed at Troy High School in Troy, Ohio. The performance space is a typical high school auditorium that has a large stage and abundant seating. This short-play takes place in a high school with focus on the drama club and cheerleaders. The plot starts out with the Drama Geeks having a monthly meeting in their favorite coffee shop discussing the latest news in the wonderful world of a Thespian. Meanwhile, the cheerleaders are prepping for the upcoming homecoming game and dance. Suddenly, something odd has happened to the cheer squad, they have begun to smell as if they had died and have grown an acquired taste for human flesh. Head zombie cheerleader, Peaches has risen from her vengeful grave to organize a zombie apocalypse upon the whole school. It is up to the Drama geeks to use their theatrical strategies to slay Peaches and her zombie cheer squad.…

I went to a tailgate for the USC vs. Vanderbilt away game given by Carolina After Dark and I had a blast! I honestly did not know what to expect. I was not planning on going, but decided to meet two of my friends there right before halftime. I was pleasantly surprised. They had really cool music playing and there were people dancing everywhere. It was overall such a fun atmosphere. It took me awhile to find my friends because there were so many people. I was so surprised at how many people were there. There were no seats left near my friends so I sat on the floor next to them. They had two huge white screens that they were projecting the game onto. It was so cool when USC did something good because the whole crowd would act like they were really…

The stadium trembles as 93,000 Cardinal and Gold clad fans chant and cheer for their favorite football team. Down on the sideline is Tommy Trojan and his majestic white steed Traveler. Next to them is the beautiful USC ‘Song Girls’ as they await the team’s entrance into the stadium. In the North Tunnel you can see the team walking toward the field. Hand and Hand the players march as one team. U-S-C, U-S-C chants are deafening as they run out onto the field escorted by Tommy Trojan and the Song Girls. Seeing the players trotting onto the field the fans are riled up into a frenzied state. At that moment the Spirit of Troy Marching Band strikes up to the tune of Seven Nation Army. The crowd responds by singing along. You can see the fear in the opponent’s eyes as they await their…

One cool, September afternoon, I stood in a hotel parking lot with 200 of my closest friends, in an unfamiliar state. Charter buses sat in the background with window paint announcing our arrival in a loud, “JAGUAR PRIDE!” The sun rose on the horizon, scattering blues and pinks across our faces. We were divided into two groups, the larger stood not twenty feet away doing breathing exercises and stretches, the smaller divided into its own groups, both of which battling the wind and the sun; the elements acting against us. We warmed up and we fought the elements, but there was always someone reminding us, “Savor this moment, this is what we’re here for.” Before we knew it, we were standing at the gates of Welcome Stadium, waiting, hearts pumping, minds reeling, some of us numb, for our chance to show Dayton what the Jaguar Pride was made of. We took the field, and everything that could have gone wrong, did. Our sound system crashed, we couldn’t hear the pit playing the opening, and we couldn’t see the drum majors giving us the count off, because we were stuffed into formation…

"Tailgating," as deduced from the readings and experiences, is a popular practice especially among collegiate football fanatics and is usually done prior to a football game. It is a way of enjoying an upcoming football game and interacting with people through eating and drinking spree. In relation to this, Al Bohl, the Athletics Director of the University of Kansas, states, in the internet article of Terry Rombeck (2001), that, "It 's recognized across the nation tailgating is a popular tradition."…

One band that should always come to mind when thinking of marching is Moon Area High School Marching band. Through hours of hard work and excellent leadership, the group has mastered all techniques of marching, balance, form, and musical ability. Every Tuesday and Friday evening from five to seven in the evenings, the Moon Area High School Marching Band is led through practice by Mr. James Davis, the school’s respected Band Director. The band has won a couple awards, including 12th Place at West Allegheny’s Cavalcade of bands! In fact, Moon has only rightfully won two awards in the last 30 years of performing.…

    Cheer Captain

There are many different opinions out there about cheerleaders, many good, and some bad. Some think of them as the girls standing by the football field, but I think of cheerleading as a symbol of all the spirit that we can share, and a token of appreciation toward the team that’s being cheered on. Cheerleading is such a vital part to many sections of the school. If I was chosen to be a captain for the 2013-2014 year, not only would I make sure that any negative opinions were squashed, but the great qualities the squad holds, are emphasized. I have come along way since i started cheerleading. I remember my first day of cheer and how nervous I was to be trying something I’ve never done before, and how inexperienced I was. Throughout the season, I’ve always worked my hardest to pick up new dances, stunts, and cheers right away. Since most of the new girls joining cheer this year have never done cheer before, I find it a privilege to help them grow to become the best they can be athletically, and with their attitudes. I think an important quality of being a captain is always, always, including everyone! I feel like i dedicated my time to be the best cheerleader i can be and also the best person i can be for myself and i have accomplished it, but im not finished yet. I learn new things everyday, you learn in the process. I want the new girls to be the best they can be, i think i can really help them. Actually, i know i can. It's super hard to be confident and i learned that but i built up my confidence i want these girls to experience their first year of cheer and be like "wow". I've discovered myself in so many ways, i want the new team to do so as well. Cheeleading is something im very passionate about and i just want the world to know that. I know my schedule for the next school year will be a problem considering i might not be able to have cheer sixth period, but i will try my hardest to work something out. I need a chance. I…

This time last year I was a senior at the University of Illinois and it was our Homecoming. This meant we all ran around looking for an occasion to be a college student, interpret that however you may like. I was given the wonderful opportunity to serve on the 2015 Homecoming Court with 19 other outstanding seniors selected based on their campus involvement, merit and community service. I was in a parade, got to wear a cool sash and was in the halftime of the football game. But this wasn't nearly as eventful as how this homecoming weekend ended.…

Tight uniforms, loud voices, pulled back ponytails with bows the size of their head, white tennis shoes, and girls being thrown into the air, is the typical definition of a cheerleader but what exactly is a cheerleader? A cheerleader is a person who is a member of a group who shout out special songs or chants to encourage the team and entertain the crowd during a game in sports such as football or basketball. Is it a sport? I hear a lot of the times that cheerleading isn’t a sport. A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another for entertainment. That doesn’t exactly make cheerleading qualify as a sport. There is a difference in what some people may make out of it. In some case people say if you compete in competitions cheerleading is a sport, but in other cases if the cheerleader is just the girl that cheers on the crowd for entertainment, this isn’t considered to be an athlete. A cheerleader that competes in competition is considered to be an athlete.…

It was game day and we were all playing in the Homecoming Game. It was exciting because we were the first freshman to play in the Homecoming Game. The day was short and we got out of school around 11:00 and was warm outside. After school, we had to go to the Homecoming Parade. The Parade was fun and we threw out bubble gum and some other kinds of delicious candy. A lot of our friends were at the parade and obviously gave them a lot of candy. For us the parade was about 15 minutes and then we took a yellow bus back to Hempstead before our big game. My pregame meal was Subway I had to walk and it was hot and I was sweating and it wasn't even game time. After subway, we arrived just in time to get packed up and then we took a bus over to our…

This year the experience was much more different for me because it was a month into me moving on campus and I was beginning to feel a little homesick. I invited my mom to join me in the festivities and, as usual, we had an awesome time. Before we sat down to eat, we walked around looking at stands that were set up by various sororities, frats, and organizations. While eating we watched the mini parade that featured the UAM band, cheerleaders, and football team. Also, we enjoyed watching the excitement on the little kids faces, when getting their faces painted and getting a balloon made of their favorite characters. Later, we joined everyone to watch the Boll Weevil host the Arkansas Tech. Sadly, they were defeated by Arkansas tech,…
