Marching Band History
The Ohio State University Marching Band has been a big part of The Ohio State University campus and band history for a long time. The Ohio State Marching Band has influenced many people around the state and the country. Although becoming a member of The Ohio State Marching Band takes great effort and discipline in high school, staying a member of the band all four or five years of college takes even more tenacity.
At the beginning of an Ohio State home football game, the marching band carries on a tradition that first started in 1928. The traditional Ramp Entrance was first performed in Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. During the Ramp Entrance, the band members come down the ramp that leads onto the left side of the field. Becoming a drum major at Ohio State, or anywhere for that matter, takes hard work and extreme dedication. The drum major comes to every band practice which is sometimes more than thirty hours a week. The drum major reports to the field with the other marching band members for a home-game by 4:30 a.m. The drum major’s position is based on strict military discipline. The drum major has a batton and a high feathered hat which gives him the military appearance. A tradition the drum major has taken on since the first drum major, George ‘Tubby’ Essington, is to touch the feather on their hat, to the turf on the field. It used to be, in 2002, the drum major position offered a full in-state scholarship. To become a drum major, a student first must become a member of the D-row. Script Ohio was first performed on October 10, 1926 by OSUMB (Ohio State University Marching Band). In 1926, the first person to dot the “i,” was John W. Brungart. Originally, an E-flat cornet player dotted the “i,” but now a fourth or fifth year sousaphone player dots the “i.” (The Ohio State University)
Before every home game, there is a session called the Skull Session, where fans are treated to a variety of activities. The band plays their pre-game and halftime show songs following the visiting marching band.The Skull Session always starts two hours and fifteen minutes before the kickoff at home games. Every year, more than 400 hopefuls tryout to become a member of The Ohio State University Marching Band. Being one of the 255 members of The Ohio State Marching Band, means that you have the privilege to be a member of “The Best Damn Band In The Land, or TBDBITL. It takes hard work and commitment.
