Life & Toilet Paper

Graduation day, what a day. It was by far the most nerve-racking, anxious day ever. Many thoughts were racing through my head. All the parties, family members showering you with gifts. I couldn’t hardly sleep the night before because of the anixety of walkiong across the stage, and knowing I never have to go back to school again. Actually, it was probably more of a relief for the faculty and staff because they did not have to go through all my controversy anymore. I was always the one who was the class clown and in school and always got into mischief all the time. Of course, what do you expect when you come to school not in proper uniform and told to go home. As I got up for graduation day my palms were sweaty all day. I took three showers to keep cool, but then I realized I was only graduating. It wasn’t like I was winning a million dollars or going on the show, “Deal or No Deal”. When I arrived at the auditorium, we gathered in the back gym area and waited for the music to start so we could walk, for the last time, out Warren Easton Charter High School as a student. I was looking through one of my friends glasses as we apoke and one of my teachers was waving her hand to tell me I needed to come talk to her real quick. So, I walked over and asked, "Hey Corice, my girl. I'm bout too be up out this thang!” She laughed replied, "I know, I'm going to miss your crazy butt." She then graced me with some information and said I can take it any way I want to. I looked around and thought it was going to be something bad. So I listened. And it was advice on life from a teacher that had been through alot. She said, “Jarrid remember, life is like a roll of tiolet paper." I was dumbfounded by her 'advice'. Then I said, "What is that supposed to mean?” She replied, “You can make your life short and wasteful, or you can be YOU and make it long and useful.” I started to laugh inside to myself about it. She looked at me and said, “What is so funny? I'm serious.” I replied, “WHAT?? Where did you get that from? I’ve never thought that I would compare my life to roll of tiolet paper." She looked at me and was telling to think about it while. So I thought, as I walked to get in place for our 'grad stride', it slowly started to sink in and it had hit me as I walked across the stage to recieve the achievement that was waited four years to get. Right before we turned out tassles to the left, and I got ready to send my cap into the air, it finally dawne on me what she was tryng to say. The simile hit me out of nowhere like as if someone had blindsided me. Ms. Corice was simply trying to lead me in the right direction. That’s why she was stating that it was up to me to make the choice. Just like the simile that she was portraying to me in the classroom. I took her advice. Oh yes I took her advice, and let me say I used that roll of tiolet paper. She never said that I couldn’t have more than one roll. Meaning that I have had to “purchase” a few rolls, since the day I walked out of Warren Easton Charter High. I’m sorry no one can make one roll of tiolet paper last ten years, let alone one. But, I have made it last for two years, educated that same thought on alot of people and just like me they all did the same thing at first. They would giggle and then about twenty minutes later it would hit them. That look of “Wow, that’s an extremely deep thought." My class reunion is being planned and I’m sure the rebutle to the teacher will be quite funny. Hopefully, since I have gained a few years. Maybe she will set another simile upon me to think about for another few years. At least I took one piece of information out with me when I hit them doors for the very last time.

It was the day that I was dreading all week. It was the day my brother was leaving for college. Since the day i was born me and my older brother have been really close. We liked the same things, hung out with the same people, and played on the same sports teams. We did everything together. As time went on nothing really changed even through high school we were still really close. The day he was leaving for college I was at my friends house and didn’t want to go home until the minute he was leaving. I didn’t want to see him until he left because i knew it was going to be hard for me to watch him leave so i figured if i didn’t see him until he said bye it wouldn’t be as bad. Being valedictorian probably wasn't your dream as a high school freshman, but it was mine. I took that dream and made it into a plan. A plan is defined as: an intention or decision about what one is going to do. After the first day of high school, I came home to tell my parents of my plan. My parents were very proud of my ambition, but uncertain about its execution. My parents knew high school would be hard so they did their best to support me and as the year came to an end, I was ranked at the top of my class.…

A defining moment in my life was my 8th grade graduation. To most people who went to Hopkins, this may not seem like a big deal but to me, attending a private Christian elementary/middle school for the past 10 years was kind of a big deal. I had just spent the past 10 years with about the same 18 people and just like that- we would never see each other at school together ever again. The switch from a parochial middle school to a public junior high was difficult. The fact that I was no longer with my friends who I build strong relationships with hurt me a lot. It was hard to make friends in 9th grade because I missed all of my old friends so much. This gigantic transition changed many parts of who I thought I was. When at a religious school,…

    Why I started drawing

I was fortunate enough to spend the first 11 years of my life in Grand Rapids, Michigan: home of streetcars, freezing winters, and humid summers. My family and I lived in a standard sized cobblestone house surrounded by thick bristled green fir trees that stood so tall, and wide that my father was able to build my younger sister, Erinn and I a pint-sized tree house that was pink with lime green shutters that he managed to somehow wedge in between two of the giants. I went to an elementary school up the road by the name of Endeavor; our school did not require students to take an art class until the 5th grade. Summer had soon come to an end, which meant I was on my way into art. I didn’t think very highly of art class because of all of the bad experiences that I had from the years before, even just the thought of macaroni art, or adding paper mâché over thin waxy balloons was enough to make me cringe. I even tried begging the principle, Mrs. McDowell to make an exception. I offered to volunteer in the library in place of art. Principle McDowell was a thin middle aged woman with spindly fingers, and bucket like wavy blonde hair. She had been the principle at Endeavor ever since I had been in kindergarten, she knew me well and told me that I would do just fine, and sent me on my way. I watched the day melt down until the bell rang after lunch and recess signaling the start of art.…

Summer vacation is probably the happiest period in a student's life. During the hot dreaded summer of twenty twelve, I experience many things to look back on like every other summer. Overall my summer was filled with happiness and was joyful. I enjoy fresh air, listening to great music, and maybe just think about anything. This summer was the best summer I’ve had so far, for many reasons. I look at summer to be a time to enjoy the beach with your friends, festivals to let loose, and surrounding yourself in good environments that bring good vibes.…

The loud applause from the students rocked the hall when the school syndicate entered. Everyone was so excited about it. The music was uplifting as the symbols of the school then our teachers and the dean had reached their seats. We rose and sang the National Hymn. After the hymn, the dean opened the graduation ceremonially with his speech. Then some of our teachers and some pupils said "thank you" and "good bye" to each other. Although the first speech was quite dry, the others were very interesting.…

There are four students in front of you. The first student, Jessica, is bright eyed and ready to learn. She has her pencils lined up on the desk and her notebooks are stacked neatly. It looks like she got up early to do her hair and makeup perfectly. The second student, Tyler, looks like he didn’t get much sleep last night and is having trouble focusing. Wearing what appears to be yesterday’s dirty clothes, he barely made it to class on time. The third student, Ashley, is quiet. She is what you would describe as a background kid: she is perfectly happy to stay out of the limelight. She completes her work on time and then fades into the masses. The final student, John, doesn’t seem to know what is going on. His eyes are darting around the room and he is talking a thousand miles per hour about bees, soup, and tornados to no one in particular.…
