Valedictorian Narrative
Being valedictorian probably wasn't your dream as a high school freshman, but it was mine. I took that dream and made it into a plan. A plan is defined as: an intention or decision about what one is going to do. After the first day of high school, I came home to tell my parents of my plan. My parents were very proud of my ambition, but uncertain about its execution. My parents knew high school would be hard so they did their best to support me and as the year came to an end, I was ranked at the top of my class.
My sophomore year I noticed a few of my classmates were in an upper level math class, instead of the class the rest of us were taking. I addressed this with one of the guidance counselors, who informed me that it would be impossible for me to reach my goal even though I had perfect grades and was in the correct math for my grade level. The reason you ask? These students were chosen in the 3rd grade to move up a grade level in math based on their Illinois achievement test score. This decision made back in 2008, would allow them to take one additional grade weighted class during high school and thus making them the only students eligible to become valedictorian.

After a lot of brainstorming, I approached the school with an idea. If I took a college math course that could take the place of the high school math class those students were taking, I would be able to catch up and be on equal footing. I knew it would take a lot of hard work and dedication. I also know my ambition was leading me to go for it. The school agreed. Twice a week I left school early to attend class across town at the local college. I worked on that class for over one hundred hours at home just so I could finish the class early. I passed college algebra with an A and my plan was back on

As the music changed, a small boy of seven years old came hurried down the aisle holding a lighter. He walked right past us to the small table and lit the two lower candles. The only thing on his mind was getting his job done without burning down the house with his lighter. Following directly after him was the procession of bridesmaids. The first bridesmaid walked down the aisle, she was a friend of the bride. Right after her followed the second bridesmaid, her niece. Two more sisters followed the bridesmaid path and then, last but not least, the Maid of Honor made her way down the aisle. As the bride’s best friend finished her walk there came another small child. The ever popular flower girl of only three years old stumbled down the aisle…

My eleventh grade year was arduous. Not only was I concerned about passing five Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GGT), but math III was complex. math III was full of foreign concepts and equations. Overtime, I grew excited about learning new concepts in math III. My teacher was a great influence upon me. He regularly encouraged me to work hard. With his support and endless determination I was committed to succeeding. A few weeks went by and class was going great. We were learning how to plot linear functions, factor polynomials, and how to find missing sides on a right triangle. I was very consistent with studying and reviewing past assignments. I knew if I did not study I would not pass the tests. As the end of the semester grew near, I grew concerned about the final exam partly because I had forgotten a few of the earlier lessons in the class.…

Throughout my time is College Composition I, I learned and developed numerous skills that I will carry with me to college and beyond. While writing the five assigned essays, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. I believe a strength of mine was my ability to add in personal stories into my essays. For example, in my definition essay, I included my fear of disappointment and how I work to overcome this particular fear. On the other hand, one weakness that I struggled with was style. While writing my essays, I would sometimes use wordy and unclear sentences structures. Often times I would focus solely on improving my diction while writing my papers.…

I was awarded a wonderful education at Windham High School, but beyond the information I retained, I also learned what is important in life. At first, I thought all that mattered was the clothes you wore, what makeup you had on, and who you were friends with. There is more to life than all that. I love helping others and my induction into the National Honor Society allowed me to do just that, especially in my four service projects I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of. I try to please people and make sure they are always happy and I now know it is most important to give back to the community who gave me so much.…

When I was a National Honor Society Member at my High School, we were able to work with a program called VIP Soccer in which volunteers played with and taught special needs children the game of soccer. It was actually my favorite event within our organization especially when we got to see how happy each child was and the smiles on their parents’ faces when they saw that their son or daughter was having fun. Eventually, I was so inspired by this movement that I actually started a similar program but at my local golf club. How I got this started was actually by meeting the owner of the golf club, and the parents of my teammates on my school golf team. After a couple of months of planning and talking to more interested volunteers, I was finally…

Me being the impatient but helpful person I am I said “yeah sure”. So I moved this little box that any kid in my class could have easily moved outside of her moving it herself. She stopped what she was doing at her cabinet and she showed me my final exam grade and it said 89% B+. A surprised me began smiling excited that I would pass the class with almost a B average for the year. She looked at me and said “T, you are smart. You have given me 40% effort and still somehow you still have managed to pass my class, I struggle dealing with students who are incapable but try hard every single day and you don't show me any effort and still manage to do have a decent grade…” “Why are you afraid? You are easily one of the most gifted students I have encountered and you show no effort?”. I just sat there lost and confused and wondered how she knew and wonder why I had wasted all this time not living up to my full potential, I had let my fear of failure keep me from being the best student I could be. I now look at it and regret the decisions I made in the past. Everyday i have learned to allow myself have higher expectations than I have before. When my parents first expressed to me that I needed to take advanced courses starting freshman year, I was skeptical. I desired an easy, laid-back experience in high school; however, my parents declared otherwise. I began freshman year with three honors classes, and the parental expectation to make at least ninety-five percent in all of my classes. At the time, I thought this to be too extreme, but little did I know that colleges look back on all grades…
