Gibbs Reflective Model
This is a reflective report based on my experiences whilst on my first antenatal placement in a local hospital. I am going to use Gibbs Model for Reflection (1988) for this reflective writing, which is a effective way to help me to record my feelings and thoughts on antenatal care visits I attended, the varying patients I examined, the outcomes of these examinations and any problems or achievements I felt important in my time there.
Description
To be honest, I did assume a variety of situations that might occur in the hospital before starting my clinical placement, such as I couldn't take the correct blood pressure, or I might ask the improper questions, etc. On that day, with the ironed uniform, polished shoes and well organised documents, I felt more confident on my …show more content…
The midwife was always developing supportive relationships with pregnancy women. And women were being treated with dignity and respect, which means they are actively involved in the decision-making processes throughout all stages of their pregnancy.
Evaluation
The placement was great because I had the opportunity to practice the skills that learned at school and I broadened my vision and midwifery knowledge in a real hospital. Furthermore, I was familiar with the antenatal care service provided in this hospital for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. This service is delivered under a primary health care framework where each woman is cared for within the context of her family and social situation.
Analysis
With the experiences of the first placement, I had more confidence to deal with the antenatal visits. The most important skill I do need to develop is communication, because good communication between healthcare professionals and women is essential in maternity care. Especially, when caring the aboriginal women, it is necessary to ensure care and information should be culturally appropriate.
