Certified Nurse Midwife Essay
A Certified Nurse Midwife (CMN) is a nurse that provides care for low-risk pregnancies from before, during, and after labor. Their main purpose is to deliver babies, provide care for the mother and her baby, and assist gynecologists and obstetricians (“Certified Nurse Midwife,” 2014). In order to become a CMN, one has to attend nursing school, pass the NCLEX, work for a few year in a related field, then receive further education in a Nurse-Midwife Education program, and get certified from the American College of Nurse-Midwives Certification Council (ACNM) (“Certified Nurse Midwife,” 2014). The Labor and Delivery Nurse is a nurse that primarily assists the woman and her family through childbirth. This nurse’s tasks include monitoring the vitals of the mother and baby, identifying time intervals between contractions, and teaching the mother and family about childcare after birth (“Labor and Delivery Nurse,” 2014). During this past clinical day, I shadowed a postpartum nurse. I would describe my nurse, Irene, as a very knowledgeable yet compassionate nurse. She was very skilled in providing not only medical care for her patients, but also emotional support. She was very efficient in time management and prioritizing who needed what the most of the four patients she had. She worked very well with the CNA’s on the floor by always communicating with them to coordinate the care they provide as
