Five Great Pastors
Ava Fournillier
November 12, 2012

Throughout history they have been many great ministers that spoke the word of God. So, what are the marks of a good church pastor? Most people would talk about a strong foundation of knowledge in the scripture, and a commitment to the Gospel. These are great answers, and those qualities will make themselves apparent from the pulpit in each sermon. The key to building and leading a healthy church is to be a good and healthy pastor (and leader). Apostle Paul outlines the essential qualities of a good and effective Servant of God. Though we do find many other useful traits elsewhere in the word of God, we will see only from this chapter (1Timothy Ch. 4) what Paul one of the greatest ministers of Jesus Christ wants to say about a good minister. So opinions may differ on great preaching. Many would say a great preacher consist of great leadership, or influence.
Great preachers are persons of great personal integrity before they are great pulpiteers. Also, great preachers have the shepherd heart, walk with the Lord, work hard and are passionate souls. Great preachers obviously have a passion to preach and are definitely anchored to the bible.
While there are many that might fit these characteristics, a few stand out to me. Dr. Freddie Haynes of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. For more than 28 years, Pastor Freddie Haynes has been serving the Dallas area through his church Friendship-West Baptist. Growing his ministry to over 12,000 members, Dr. Haynes believes in intertwining theology with sociology to meet the needs of his members. Not only that, he shares his words of wisdom every morning of the nationally syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show, where millions are blessed by his words. He is very influential by reaching out to so many people with the gospel. Influence is one of the characteristics that make a great preacher.
Since 2005, Dr. Raphael Warnock has been the spiritual leader of Ebenezer Baptist

Scripture has so many fulfilling riches that are missed because preachers fail to spend time in the scriptures, but the scripture alone is a wonderful place to begin to seek sermonic ideas. One of the biggest down falls of preachers is that they don’t spend enough time in the scripture. It is hard to say that preaching comes from the scripture, but the preachers don’t have a firm understanding of what is found in…

Lori, I truly enjoyed your interview response on Reverend Jennifer Beagle. I can agree with her statement on developing a ministry, “It’s a battle worth fighting, suit-up, buckle-up, and don’t doubt that God is in everything. Find God in every circumstance and view people as creations”. (Beagle, 2015) Just as the varying parts of the human body need each other to best accomplish its work, so the Body of Christ needs to function interdependently, like a team. (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:12-27) God so designed the Church that it "grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work". (Eph. 4:16) Christian leaders are servants. Jesus specifically addresses servant leadership…

Confidence is key factor of the preacher because he needs confidence with everything he does because without confidence he would not be successful with what he is trying to do. The preacher being confident can help with everything for example his spirituality and how he is confident in how he is using it. When the preacher preaches he displays his confidence in what he is preaching about making the people feel like the preacher is much more reliable. Confidence leads the preacher into good intentions because his confidence makes him unafraid to intend to do things that take fearlessness.…

Conscious of their own defects, they endeavor to improve themselves, but the absence of a guide, their need of books, and their scanty time, all prevent their making progress. These are the men whom the Pastor’s College welcomes… The College aims at training preachers rather than scholars. To develop all the faculty of ready speech, to help them understand the word of God, and to foster the spirit of consecration, courage, and confidence in God, are objects so important that we put all other matters in secondary position. If a student should learn a thousand things, and yet fail to preach the gospel acceptably, his College course will have missed its true design (Spurgeon 2011, Location 63 of…

The authors present their work of Churches as the way to help congregations live out their understanding of the gospel and their call to ministry by “reaching your community with the whole gospel for the whole person through whole churches” (59). By helping church leaders develop a vision of how the church should exist as the agent that drives transforming change within society, Churches succeeds as a practical guide for laity and clergy alike. One of the greatest strengths of this work is how the authors present 15 examples of real-life U.S. churches that they studied, all of which adapted holistic approaches and witnessed transformational results within their uniquely diverse communities.…

The first part of my philosophy of ministry is to teach believers in the knowledge and the ways of Jesus Christ. Every member in the church has gifts. They need to understand their gifts and if you have the gift to teach, be trained in the work of the ministry. Teaching God’s people to do the work of the ministry takes place through the teaching of Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16-17).…

Now, ask those same 100 people what a successful Godly sermon is supposed to contain and the answers will likely be even more varied. If you took that same question and asked it to 100 different members of the Lord’s church what answers would you get? You will likely find that many, have accepted the fact that if you have a sermon with a catchy introduction and some beautiful illustrations that run all the way through it which…

There are many different types of leaders and leadership styles throughout the many cultures of our world. Most are tied to one certain entity or cause. Although Dr. Billy Graham is tied to God, he is an example of leadership that spans across many different sectors. He has impacted the ministry of America by crossing lines of division among the churches as well as cultural traditions. He is motivated by love of God and that love is transferred to loving people and himself. He recognizes that he is man and he recognizes the flaws the stain that sin has left on the human nature.…

These status’ are not within the normal social hierarchy. These preachers are seen as having a spiritual presence within them and are supposed to be a direct link from God to their followers. Preachers have even become so devoted to thinking they inhabit the spiritual presence of God that people are forbidden to even touch them. Sometimes these preachers will even come out on throws that are holden up by other men so they will not be touched even entering these sermons. This style of preaching has become widely incorporated as the one of the main practices by most Prosperity Gospel pastors. Many of these preachers have become this way because Televangelism has grown very quickly in the modern era and so many followers within the black community have bought into the hype of these “direct messengers of God”. The pastors of these Mega Churches invite all to tithe and spread the ideals of individualism in an overall plan to benefit for their own prosperity. Becoming extremely wealthy and known on a global scale are the prime examples as to why the followers of Prosperity Gospel strive so hard to be blessed by God through the ways of this gospel. However, what many do not know is that these preachers did not “tithe” to be blessed with such fortunes or have complete faith in God to be awarded these extremities. Men of this financial stature within Mega Churches come to be this way by simply…

Can I preach as well as Pastor Pat or Pastor Richard absolutely not, I'm saying my work ethic, my study habits my knowledge of the Gospels and of Christ would make the transition from a Sunday school teacher or a devotional leader to a youth pastor an easy transition because I don't mind standing in front of those children and preaching the gospel because I understand how important it is for these children to know the gospel now before this sinful world takes a full grasp of their life which can actually happen to any kid no matter how well they are raised because this world is all around…
