Lori, I truly enjoyed your interview response on Reverend Jennifer Beagle. I can agree with her statement on developing a ministry, “It’s a battle worth fighting, suit-up, buckle-up, and don’t doubt that God is in everything. Find God in every circumstance and view people as creations”. (Beagle, 2015) Just as the varying parts of the human body need each other to best accomplish its work, so the Body of Christ needs to function interdependently, like a team. (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:12-27) God so designed the Church that it "grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work". (Eph. 4:16) Christian leaders are servants. Christian leaders are godly servants. This is in reference to their character. What most often distinguishes Christian from non-Christian leaders is character. Though many in the business world acknowledge the importance of character, godly character is the essential ingredient that qualifies Christians to lead others. Believing leaders know where they are going. “If you give your all, you afford yourself every opportunity possible for success”. (Maxwell, 2002) This involves the leader’s direction. Leaders need both a ministry mission and a ministry vision. The ministry mission is the church’s mission, which is the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19,20). The ministry vision is the church’s vision, which is a clear, compelling picture of what the church will look like as it accomplishes the Great Commission. All church leaders (board, staff, and lay leaders) must be moving in the same biblical direction or there will be chaos.

    Khalib Fischer of Liberty University stated that “leadership theorists are infatuated with ideas of leadership, but not a Christ-centered leadership” (2017A). While Greenleaf’s ideals are sound ethical teaching, do they truly “line up” with scripture in God’s order? For Greenleaf, the call to “serve first” is attributed to serving others, but Christians must understand the Greatest Commandment outlines the order of service, which is to serve God first, then others (Duby, 2009). Still we are fallen human beings are constant challenges will remain in maintaining the correct order of service. The key challenges of being a servant leader is (1) the need for recognition, (2) letting your career become your idol, and (3) being a workaholic who thinks everyone else is not as smart in whatever you are currently doing (Fischer, 2017B). There are four domains of leading like Jesus, called the (1) Heart, or leadership viewpoints, the (2) Head, which is internal desired kept until further disclosure, (3) Hands, which is public behavior, and (4) Habits which is how you renew your daily commitment to serve (Liberty University, n.d.). When these 4 domains are aligned in the servant leader, then trust is the result. “Not so with you” Christ says, or more applicably, “Not so with the servant leader”.     Leading like Jesus is a transformational journey (Blanchard & Hodges, 2005). It is a process that starts with personal leadership, and then the transformation cycle begins until reaching its maturity of a servant leader. A biblical foundation is a must. If servant leadership is about serving others, how can we serve others like Jesus did, if we do not understand God’s mind? The Word of God says “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:16).     As we develop into leaders, one of the things we need to know is what it means to be a servant leader. Today such examples are greatly lacking. Servant leadership is a choice by a leader to follow the example of The Jesus Christ and The Mother Teresa and lead by serving, becoming a bondservant and giving his life for others.
