Every effort you make to conserve energy adds up to saving money while protecting the environment
Every effort you make to conserve energy adds up to saving money while protecting the environment. In 2008 alone, Americans ' energy-conservation efforts collectively saved more than $19 billion in energy costs while preventing the release of greenhouse gas emissions equaling those of 29 million cars (see References 1). Becoming part of this trend doesn 't require a lot of time or effort -- small changes in your home and lifestyle can help you use energy more efficiently and save money at the same time.
Lighting
If every American replaced the incandescent bulbs in five of the most-often-used light fixtures in his home with bulbs that have earned the Energy Star seal, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere by the amount produced by 10 million cars (see References 2), according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Energy Star is a program co-sponsored by the EPA and the Department of Energy to help consumers save money and energy through the use of energy-efficient products. (See References 3)
Heating and Cooling
The average U.S. household spends $1,900 each year on utilities, with roughly half of this amount going toward heating and air conditioning costs (see References 5, page 2). You can improve the efficiency of heating and air conditioning units by frequently cleaning or replacing air filters and by having your furnace cleaned every year. In addition, check the condition of the insulation in your home and add more if necessary, paying particular attention to seals around windows and doors and ducts in the attic and crawl spaces. When it 's time to replace a unit, consider purchasing one that is Energy Star-compliant. The EPA estimates that replacing older heating and cooling units with Energy Star equipment can reduce your energy costs by almost $200 a year. (See References 6)
Transportation
Keep your automobile in good working order and the tires properly inflated to enhance performance, improve fuel efficiency and save gas.

References: 4) Water Public water systems use a lot of energy to treat, filter and deliver water to each residence in a community. By using water wisely, you can help reduce the amount of energy consumed. Teach children not to let the water run while brushing their teeth, and discourage long showers. If you feel that you must water the lawn or garden, do so in the morning hours, when temperatures are lower. Wash laundry in warm or cold water instead of hot. Identify and repair leaky faucets as soon as possible, as well as toilet leaks; the EPA says a leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons of water a day.

The United States leaves a huge carbon footprint through energy use, this can be reduced by: building energy efficient homes, reducing motor vehicle use, and recycling more. Some energy related activities were the lowering energy costs in the home. People sometimes think this to be hard but here are some good steps to follow to make it seem it easier. Reset the water heater thermostat, people do not always realize that most water heaters heat water to a set temperature and then hold it there, meaning that throughout the day and night the water heater cycles on and off, just maintaining that already set temperature. If we were to go the water heater and lower the setting a few degrees it can often save half as much energy and the chances are turning down the temperature won’t even be noticeable to most members of the family. Another way to lower energy costs in the home is with a programmable thermostat for heating the home. Just like the water heater maintains a set temperature even when it is not being used a thermostat does the exact same thing for your entire home. When we are just letting it cool off (or warm up) when there is no one awake can save energy and money as well. By letting the house cool on its own and not turning up the thermostat this can save you money. This change will usually pay for itself in around three years. We also have attic and wall insulation where there is a difference between the indoor and outdoor temperate, the more energy this will take to maintain a temperature of comfort in our homes. By adding insulation between the indoors and the outdoors we are reducing the energy demand. This of course depends on where you live, because the savings from insulating your walls and attic could almost double the savings. This will pay back in 3 ½ years to 12 years…

There are many ways to conserve natural resources, all we need to do is look around and find a way to minimize the usage of natural resource that we using everyday. For example, turn off the lights when we leave the house; minimize the waste produced by buying less packaged goods and reusable products, and recycling. These are little things we can do to help, and these does not take much effort to do; however, if everybody does the same, we can still make that difference. In the big picture, we can consider using more renewable natural resources such as hydro-power and solar-power. These energy resources are the best ways to conserve natural resource such as fossil fuel. Fortunately, many energy conservative products have been invented: hybrid or electric cars and energy-efficient home appliances. These are the reflections of people’s concern towards the natural resources depletion. On the whole, we need to start do our share to conserve the energy and resource as part of our responsibility to the natural…

We live in an old apartment that has base board heaters and single pane windows. The fall and winter heating bills were getting pretty high. So we decided to find ways to help us conserve on our heating bills and make it warm in our house without an extremely high bill. The first thing we did was ask friends if they have any ideas, and then we searched on the internet for other ways to conserve. We found consumerenergy.org and care2.com that helped us with some ideas. Next we looked on the Puget Sound Energy website to see if they had any energy tips that would help as well. After looking at all the tips we decided to put them in action. We sealed the windows so that there were no drafts and we put insulated curtains on the window too. The front door had a draft so the Consumer Energy website said to put a new seal on the door to control the draft. Then we set our thermostat at sixty eight degrees during the day and sixty three degrees at night. The next month our bill was down by six percent of the month before and the weather said it was colder outside.…

The energy that humankind is using at home pollutes the environment and reduces the availability of energy in the future. (GovHK 2010) Lighting and air conditioning are the major forms of energy consumption at home. (GovHK 2010) Both governments are therefore working to help all homes use less energy and save money from energy bills by proposed regulations and financial support. (Australian Government 2009) and (GovHK2010) The Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme is being promoted in Hong Kong and the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) programs are also being promoted in Australia. (Australian Government 2009) and (GovHK2010) These two programs have similar functions and policies. They are set out in the relevant appliance standards. (Australian Government 2009) and (GovHK2010) “For lighting, compact fluorescent bulbs are highly cost-effective replacements for incandescent, and the prices of new technologies, such as LED, are declining.” (Diesendorf 2007) In brief, the Australian and Hong Kong Governments have similar policies to save energy in homes by reducing light energy and setting appliance…

Nonetheless, saving energy not only benefits the planet, but our ‘pockets’ as well. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a simple task like replacing the light bulbs in your home can save up “75% energy of the 10% home energy costs.” Or simply unplugging electronics and appliances when not in use – a task made easier by using multiple-outlet strips, which can turn everything off with the flip of a switch – can save you money. For example, Leaving a computer on all day can cost about “21 cents per day, or about $75 per year” (U.S. Department of energy). Also, according to Goldemberg’s article “Energy for the New Millennium”, 78% of CO2 and 23% of methane is expelled from energy activities which are ultimately major contributors to indoor air pollution, urban air pollution, acidification and global…

“The primary barrier to going green is the cost competitiveness between renewable energy and other sources of electricity” (Outka, 2012, par.39). The reason that most consumers do not purchase energy saving appliances is very simple, they cannot afford it. For example, an energy-saving refrigerator freezer can cost up to a third more than a non-energy-saving refrigerator freezer, and it can take up to 8.1 years for the consumer to see a return on their investment (Roberts, 2010). Currently green products cost more because of the new research and technology required to…
