PriceChecker: What’s Your Price?
PriceChecker.my is a web-based price comparison engine designed to help customers compare prices of goods---top grocery brands---from various major retailers and across popular hypermarkets in Malaysia such as Tesco, Carrefour, Mydin, and Giant. The site compares five big hypermarkets, 16 brands and manufacturers, and over 32 products. The product categories include cereal, bread, cooking oil, fresh milk, soft drinks, and even baby diapers and laundry detergents. The featured products include Nestle Bliss, Dutch Lady Yoghurt, Kellogs Corn Flakes, Oreo, and Dugro.

The website claims 100% independence from the retailers featured on their website, with the support of a team of dedicated professionals trying their best to check prices on the customer’s behalf. They guarantee to find the right price and value for money. Their business policy states, ‘It is important to PriceChecker.my to be independent plus having consistent and accurate data at all time. This is the key value of the service to ensure the information is 100% trustworthy.’

PriceChecker.my also offers a mobile-friendly version. Customers can use their smartphone or even tablet when browsing the website while they are shopping. At the click of a mouse to select a particular product to compare, PriceChecker instantly provides the cheapest price offered at a hypermarket. For example, a comparison of prices for Dutch Lady Yoghurt may display the cheapest price of RM4.49 at Giant, compared to RM4.69 and RM4.59 at Tesco and Carrefour, respectively.

In addition, it also provides quick information about the product, e.g. Dutch Lady low fat drinking yoghurt is the only yoghurt with vitamins A, C, and E; the weight or volume of the pack offered; and additional information about flavours, benefits, etc.

Comparison shoppers are individuals who work for retail, boutique, and variety stores. As a comparison shopper you visit other competitors stores and their online shops to compare the different prices and quality of the products. They go in and look at all of the products so that they can come back to the store that they work for and compare it to their own merchandise. After the comparison shopper has completed their job they give either an oral or a written report to their boss, and with that information management set prices, procedures, and the buying policies. The majority of the time a comparison shopper specialized in one item or one department of a store. When the comparison shopper visits the competitors store they act like they are a normal customer. When they are in the store they are trained to notice items that are selling particularly well, and they examine the competitor’s sale items. They may also purchase unusual or new items so they can examine them. Part of their job can even consist of…

Over the past few years there has been renewed focus on the use of price as a merchandising lever. This is due to a number of factors including volatility in commodity prices and the strained consumer purse as a result of wider economic issues. In both Europe and North America, a number of grocers have focused their marketing on price and value, repositioning themselves in an attempt to gain or retain market share. This focus on price has required significant investment in terms of process and people and in some cases technology. There are a number of software providers that offer solutions to aid in the process of making price decisions. These range from simple rules-based price planning offerings to highly sophisticated price optimization solutions which determine the best price position in order to achieve specific goals such as maximizing overall margin. Considering the need to balance the consumer’s desire for low price with the retailer’s need to maximize value for its shareholders, the adoption of sophisticated solutions has not been as high as some analysts had anticipated. In this white paper, we will discuss: • Why pricing is more important than ever for grocery and hardline retailers • Benefits that can be achieved when using technology to help make price optimization decisions • Fears or barriers to sophistication—why retailers have been wary of price planning and price optimization solutions • What to consider when selecting a price planning and price optimization solution…
