Hybrid or electric cars have been developed over time by using ideas from hundreds of different people over hundreds of years. No one person can be given credit for this invention. The history of electric cars is divided into three different parts. The early years, from 1890-1929. People were very interested in this new idea. The middle years, from 1930-1989. During this time, not many people wanted to buy hybrid or electric cars. The current years from 1990-present. Hybrid cars are considered a better choice for the environment over cars that are powered by gasoline. England and France were the first countries to start experimenting with electric cars. The first electric vehicle was created by M. Raffard in France in 1881. It was a converted Hillman Sociable tricycle. The United States started to become involved in 1895, this happens to be the beginning of the Golden Age of dominance for the electric car market. There was a brief increase with the interest in hybrid cars. It was because of gasoline shortages during World War II. People also realized the need to reduce pollution from exhaust fumes. They also wanted to reduce the importation of foreign crude oil. It was during this time that there were many attempts to make new, more practical hybrid cars. In the early 1960’s, the Battronic Truck Company was formed. The first Battronic electric truck was made in 1964. It was able to go up to 25 mph and go 62 miles in one day. Battronic and General Electric worked together from 1973 to 1983 to make 175 utility vans. They were to be used in the utility industry to show what battery powered vehicles are capable of. On its own, Battronic also developed 20 passenger busses in the late
