A. Attention Gainer: According to Statista, over 263 million cars and trucks currently pollute our earth’s environment (“Number of vehicles…”, 2015). And that is just in the US alone.
B. Reason to Listen: Yet more than 99% of the vehicles sold in the United States are populated by these types of polluting vehicles.
C. Speaker Credibility (right to inform): Hello I’m Paul and I have been researching different types of vehicles and have seen the transformation of the automotive industry for the last thirteen years. In addition, I have conducted additional research to provide more detailed information throughout this presentation.
D. Thesis statement: I will tell you why the non-polluting electric car is superior to the gasoline powered one.

Information (sub-point): Gas powered vehicle help promote our dependency on fossil fuels. Currently, according to the World Bank, the United States uses 83.7 percent of total energy consumption is powered by fossil fuels. This dramatically went down after legislation regarding catalytic converters and unleaded gasoline passed through in 1975 (Melosi).
TRANSITION STATEMENT: While the consequences of gasoline powered vehicles can be quite bad, electric vehicles had trouble appealing to the automotive industry for various reasons.
B. Main Point # 2 (Causes or Barriers) (this should be a full sentence) Electric vehicles have introduced compromises in the past that were debilitating toward the overall user experience.
1. Information (sub-point): One of the major disadvantages was the price. Generally, electric cars were significantly more expensive than their gasoline counterparts. For example, a General Motors EV1 from the late 90’s cost about $34,000 (Quiroga, 2009). With inflation adjustment, this would amount to around $52,000 today.
