English 1302 Reflection
Before beginning this course, I knew that I lacked confidence within my writing. People say that you are your own worst critic, and I fully agree with that statement. My writing was not terrible in some aspects, but I knew that it needed to be improved upon. I lacked the experience because writing was not something that I did on a daily basis. As I progressed through English 1302, I realized that I was developing new skills that begun to transform the way I wrote. By receiving constructive criticism, I was able to learn more about myself as well as my abilities and limitations. This course not only helped me improve my writing skills, but it required me to become more self-motivated to complete my work as well as helped me manage my time more efficiently. English 1302 have allowed me to become a more adequate writer because I have learned valuable skills that I can utilize to perfect my writing ability.
When writing a paper, it is never perfect on the front try. Through peer reviews, I was able to revise other student’s papers as well as look at the comments on my own. I am able to communicate more proficiently using words that have a specific connotation to convey how I am feeling towards the subject. Most of the papers that we have written in class were persuasive so I would argue my position by stating statistics or facts to prove my point. Even though I have to keep in mind that I needed to avoid including biased feelings, I have learned how to properly balance an argument so that the audience can see both side’s perspectives and see how one cleanly outweighs the other.     In elementary and middle school, we were all taught to write first drafts before writing our final copies. Teachers would tell us it is important to take the time to write and organize our thoughts and ideas before writing a final copy. I would never complete this step. I was usually one of the students that would spend my time writing to just get the writing done. Then, I would look over it quickly and correct only few parts. My “first draft” would usually end up being my final draft. I have never enjoyed writing and have never really liked my own writing. My writing was never the one talked about by teachers or ever given a good grade. I would never bother fixing my first draft because I never thought I could make it into a good quality paper. Lamott describes a brilliant writer sitting down and writing a polished piece of work in one sitting and then goes on to explain how that never happens. This essay actually reflected in my writing experience when I tried to make a rough draft for my paper or a review on the internet.     English 111 is the first college English class I have taken, but despite that I feel I would be able to bring a lot into this class.
