USC Aiken: Course Analysis
Course Reflection
My years at USC Aiken was an incredible experience. I met many people with great personalities. More importantly, I am grateful for the academic skills that I received from my classes. I learned how to write, read, and speak professionally. Without learning these proper skills, I would not become the person I am today. Therefore, there was one class that improve my understanding of non-western literature, which is English 291. It is a high level English course with interesting topics about culture. I decided to take this class not because it was a requirement for my major, but it shows a deep understanding about different culture’s traditions and beliefs. The course also focus on various authors from different geography regions.
While I was in English 291, writing papers was an important part of the class. The students had to test their skills by writing with proper grammar and content. Therefore, this class made me realized what kind of weaknesses was troubling me. I noticed how I lack with some grammar, such as commas, colons, or quotations. However, I did the best I could to improve these problems, so I can write more functional papers. I also noticed how this course persuade me to use the writing room as much as possible. Going to the writing room allow me to receive in-depth advice, which also helped incorporate my

However, the course focused on a great value on Japanese and African culture. There were a variety of stories with amazing themes that seems to impact on several students, including me. The reason why is because reading stories from another culture influenced me to view them differently. For instance, I always knew there was a cultural struggle in the black community. However, in “Mrs. Plum,” I did not expect it was a huge social conflict in the black community against the white. It seems the reason why is because of politics that was arranged by the

The English 3003 class has helped me in various ways in improving and shaping my writing skills. Although some of the work were tedious and sometimes frustration at times, but overall it was a fun class to be in and was a great learning experience as well. I had to take this class not because I failed to secure an 8 in the WST test but because I had problems mainly due to my poor writing. Throughout the class this quarter I experienced many methods and different types of writings and essays. The writing homework took time, and several ideas and sometimes google searches to make it a good essay I can score marks on, but in return, I learned skills and techniques…

Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

The first few weeks were focused on learning about each class mate as well as learning about different audiences for different situations. An assignment that was assigned to the class was that everyone needed to get on the internet and research about people that were affected by different horrible situations, such as drugs, alcohol, women that worked “the corner” for money and many other reasons. While looking through the pictures of each person, we were to right a short summary about a person that was interesting. One person that stood out is “Takeesha 3- is a prostitute and is a mother and she is happy with the way things are she says it is what it is” (DeShazo #10) This woman stated that she knew what she had done and was really okay with the way it was. Also, another assignment completely opposite of this assignment was “Fish Cheeks.” This is a story written by Amy Tan about a girl that is Chinese and has a crush on an American boy and is ashamed of her culture. An example is “Because she is the opposite of him and does not know what he will think of her family.” (DeShazo #1 Fish Cheeks) This girl was ashamed of her culture and soon realized after the dinner was over that her mother was trying to make things better for her by cooking…

Overall, my experience taking English 106-H was fulfilled and I truly enjoyed my time in class. What were once weaknesses, slowly, but surely became strengths. Thus, it was through my weaknesses that helped me develop my writing skills, making me a stronger writer. Through free writing, word traps, and ideas of my own, I was able to implement those strategies into my writing. Nevertheless, I have reached my goal, but still will continue to strive for even stronger writing through out all of my courses at Lycoming College.…

This class gave me the opportunity to practice both forms of writing. I feel more confident writing a personal narrative or rhetorical analysis than I previously did. I also understand different rhetorical situations, which is critical in developing a strong paper.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…
