Hybrid vehicles are popular in today’s society. I remember summer 2008 when gas was almost five dollars a gallon. I was driving a Honda Civic and it cost me forty dollars to fill up my gas tank. When I first bought the car it only took me ten dollars to fill up the gas tank I was disappointed. I though very hard about purchasing me a hybrid vehicle. A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses two or more power sources to move a vehicle. (Wikipedia, 2007)These vehicles contain one or more electric motors and an internal combustion engine. There are many types of power sources that can be used on a hybrid vehicle. Some powers sources include gasoline or diesel fuel, rechargeable energy storage system, hydrogen, compressed air, wind, solar, human powered, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, coal, radio wave, wood, or other combustibles. .(Shabna,2007) Hybrid vehicles are popular because they provide improved fuel economy, environmental benefits, quieter operation, better performance, and increased functionality. The hybrid vehicle achieves lower emissions and greater fuel economy than the conventional internal combustion engines. . (Shabna, 2007)The reason one can save on gas is because the hybrid vehicle relies on both gasoline and electric motors for power needs. The hybrid vehicles also save on gas by shutting down the gasoline or diesel engine while coasting, idle periods, or during traffic stops. Low rolling resistance tires are used on hybrid vehicles; these tires are more inflated and stiffer than regular tires so they improve fuel economy. There are many different type of hybrid vehicles. There are two wheeled and cycles type vehicles such as electric bicycles and mopeds that are hybrid vehicles. (Wikipedia, 2007)Mopeds and bicycles are

    * One of the unique features of a hybrid is that when you first put your foot on the gas pedal to get started from a stopped position, the electric motor is the first thing to engage. The advantage to this is that this is also the point in standard engines where they pollute the most. Also, a hybrid Camry engine shuts off when stopped so no fuel is burning and producing green-house gases. Because of these features, emissions from a hybrid can decrease by as much as 90 percent.…

With the evolution of hybrid vehicles some consumers have made a commitment to affect the environment in a very positive way. A hybrid car is a vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can directly or indirectly provide propulsion power. Cities like Seattle have public busses that run on diesel but are also electric and powered by wires throughout the city. Once away from these wires, the diesel engine starts to function as a second contributor to the movement of the bus, but the electric engine is mainly functioning throughout the lifespan of these public busses. This system produces a minimum amount of negative carbon released into the atmosphere. Although cities have adopted this requisite, people are starting to adjust to it as well. Not only does owning a hybrid vehicle benefit the future, but also getting extraordinary mileage to the gallon is economical.…

    • During an executive test drive just months before product launch, Daimler Chrysler officials declared a no-launch decision because of excessive vehicle vibration for the company's newly designed Dodge Ram Mega Cab 4x4 pickup. • Cummins Inc., manufacturer of the truck's diesel engine, immediately chartered a Six Sigma team and employed the DMAIC problem-solving process to diagnose and correct the factors leading to the high vibration levels. • Through extensive testing, the Six Sigma team determined that by increasing the crankshaft counterweight radius, vibrations were significantly reduced. • The Cummins' team completed the DMAIC project in an extraordinary time frame — just over four months — resulting in a 16% reduction in vibration levels and a 100% increase in sales of the truck in the first year compared to sales projections.…

First, when purchasing a vehicle a consumer should not only be concerned with the purchase price, but with the cost of repairs as well. The initial cost of gasoline powered cars is around 75% lower than a hybrid for these reasons: hybrids have very expensive batteries, a different engine design which complicates manufacturing, and they are basically mobile computers that make them difficult to repair without special training. Regardless of which type of vehicle you own, many people think that the initial cost of a vehicle is bad enough and then something bad happens. Repairs can cause your wallet to take another large hit. Simple moving parts are bad enough when a door handle breaks off, but what if one of the computer parts fails or your electrical system has a malfunction? This happens with both gasoline and hybrid cars, but repairing your hybrid means twice the amount of money. For example, the battery in a hybrid has a limited shelf life and when it does need to be replaced it can cost from $3,000 to $6,000, but you can buy a…

Changes are being made in the designs of automobiles. These changes will certainly take time, considering it has been over a century for the gasoline combustion engine to become what it is today. In the United States, car companies have joined forces to develop newer cleaner technologies. The research on alternate fuel sources for cars began long ago, but it was not until 1999 that the first hybrid electric powered vehicle was sold. This car was manufactured by automaker Honda, and was called the Insight. An electric hybrid vehicle employs the operation of a small engine to assist a typically battery powered electric system. The electric motor propels the front wheels at low speeds, and then at higher speeds, the standard internal combustion engine takes over. When the engine is running, it automatically charges the batteries used for the electric motor…
