Cause and Effect
To be a successful leader in the world, you have to be shaped and molded by your past experiences and use them to try and create a better present and future for others. In Ender’s
Game, by Orson Scott Card, Ender grew from a 6 year old boy who relied on his family, into a well capable, strong leader who was preparing to lead the human race to victory in the war against the buggers. Ender has grown to be a leader because of the friends and allies he made,
The enemies he defeated, and through his distinguished actions through the impossible tests the teachers throw at him.
Ender becomes a strong leader through the allies that he made whom eventually becomes friends. Originally, Ender does not have many friends, besides Valentine and was constantly tested for his ability to survive and fend for himself. A strong leader has the support of many, and when Ender first started battle school, he was isolated and bullied. As he continues training he makes many friends, such as Alai and Petra, who support him and help him through his career and help him eventually get to the leader of dragon army and on his way to command school. Earning the trust of friends is a vital condition for a commander as he must earn his crew’s trust for them to follow his orders without questions. Alai was one of the first friends that
Ender makes, and who trusted him with his life. “That was what Alai had given him; a gift so sacred that even Ender could not be allowed to understand what it meant” (51). This magnitude of trust is crucial to Ender as a commander of his peers and as a friend. It signifies how his peers trust Ender and that they will follow him without question. There is only so much one person can do, but through a series of events, Ender earns many friends to become a leader.
Ender defeats his enemies that prove a threat to him. While in training, Ender encounters many bullies such as Stilson and Bonzo, who bully him in gangs as they are jealous of Ender

becoming the new mastermind and promoted. To be a leader, he or she is faced with rivalry.
While Ender is taking a shower, Bonzo confronts him with other members. Bonzo says, “This is no game, We’re tired of you, Ender. You graduate today. On ice “(146). This shows the threat that Bonzo is trying to act upon Ender, to beat him up in jealousy and hatred for Ender being smarter and becoming higher in position. Ender confronts each of them and beats them up or puts them in their rightful place, ending with Bonzo seriously injured. By defeating his enemies,
Ender shows that he can be a leader by defeating those who threaten his safety and position of power. Ender completes and outwits the teachers by winning games and tests that were made to be impossible. As the key to the future in the eyes of the earth government, Ender is put through harsh and impossible trials in order to see if Ender is the boy that they are looking for.
One example was in a mock battle, where Ender goes up against two armies at once, and he holds absolutly no advantage. He tells his troops to go into formation, and defeats both armies only losing a couple men. As this is shocking, “Ender was smiling. I beat you again, sir
“(153).Ender shows that the challenges and tests thrown at him, no matter how difficult, he can overcome. Ender also defeats the fantasy video game, and realizes that he must fight his inner consciousness to defeat his feelings that make him weak. When the giant kept tricking him with the cups impossible to figure out, he ripped out the giant’s eye, and passed the test made to be unpassable. Any test that life throws at him, Ender shows to conqure it and defeat the impossible. Ender shows a rightful leader when he aces and beats the impossible tests the teachers throw at him.
Ender becomes a leader, through earning friends, defeating the enemies who stand in his way, and outwitting the teacher’s impossible tests. With these qualities, Ender shows that a leader has to have allies, crush any opposition, and beat the impossible to be successful. He

proves to be the World’s salvation for the defeat of the buggers Not only for the purpose of defeating the bugger threat, Ender become the leader and the person to look up to and serve for many of the students and friends he made there. Every event and training shaped Ender to become a strong successful commander and leader.

In the country that Ender lives in the government has restricted the amount of children each family can have. The government's limit is two children per family, but he is the third child of the family. In school right after he got his monitor taken away Ender thinks to himself, “It was not his fault he was a Third. It was the government's idea, they were the ones who authorized it - how else could a Third like Ender have got into school” (7)? This quote proves that even Ender realizes that he is abnormal because he is a Third child. He understands that the only reason he is alive is because the government allowed his parents to have another child. Although he does not know this, the reason why the government approved of him being born is because his older brother and sister showed promising qualities, but did not have the right balance of cruelness and empathy. Ender showed the same promising qualities as his siblings, but unlike them he also showed having the right balance between showing cruelness and empathy. Because of Ender’s characteristics, it made him the perfect candidate for them to shape into a commander that would win the war. Not only does Ender fit the Hero’s Cycle due to his abnormal birth, but he also fits the Hero Cycle because of the challenges that he faces that build his moral strength and…

Mazer Rackham teaches Ender that no one is going to tell him what the enemy is going to do. So Mazer teaches Ender how to understand his enemies and that is one of the causes of Enders success as leader. “I am your Enemy, The first one that is smarter than you. There is no teacher but the enemy, no one but the enemy will tell you what the enemy is going to do. No one but the enemy will tell you how to destroy and conquer”(263). When Mazer Rackham says this he teaches Ender that he was to look past the enemy and understand them so he can then predict every single move. This proves Mazer strongly believes in Enders success because he wants Ender to think of him as a bad guy even though he is not. Mazer Rackham Teaches Ender that there is no point in wasting time in trying to be happy because he does not choose when to be happy and this leads to Ender focusing and eventually being the leader that he is now. “I am not a happy Man Ender, Humanity does not want us to be happy it merely wants us to be brilliant on its behalf survival first then happiness”(277). When Mazer Rackham says this he is trying to teach Ender not to waste time on being happy because happiness comes and goes and he cannot control that so he teaches him not to waste time and stay focused and he does and in the end becomes a successful…

2 major and reoccurring themes throughout Ender’s Game is manipulation and deception. Much of this novel is about how adults manipulate Ender into fulfilling their needs. They trick him, lie to him, and tell him just enough so that he can defeat the buggers. Ender pretty much sums this up when he says, “I've spent my life as someone's pawn" (Pg. 97). On one hand, it seems wrong to lie to and cheat a kid. On the other hand, the adults manipulate him to ensure the survival of the human race. Besides the manipulative relationship between the adults and Ender, there are a number of other relationships full of manipulation: Peter manipulates Valentine, Peter and Valentine manipulate the world, and Ender manipulates many other kids throughout the book. Manipulation may sounds negative, but it gets the job done.…

Friendships are constructed over time through the innuendo of mutual trust. Time is the only factor that gains trust and cannot be expected or granted to. There are plenty of circumstances where the absence of trust was the misnomer for failure in relationships. We can place trust at the highest point in the pyramid of morals, but how do we build and sustain trusting relationships? Simplified, by mandating the army leadership values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.…
