Arthur Miller was an american playwright from New York city who was best known for the novel and play “ The Crucible ” that he had published in 1953. Because reputation and respect was so important throughout the village, Elizabeth is known around the town as Goodie Proctor. She lies under oath to the court by saying John did not commit adultery to save her husband and their reputation.Later on John Proctor gets accused of witchcraft by Mary warren. Where he first agrees to lying to the townspeople about committing witchcraft so he would not get hanged, but later on realizes that he does not get another name and that he will not live with the townspeople of Salem believing that he could do witchcraft.

Elizabeth claims that she “thought john had fancied Abigail”. A few moments later she finally states that “Proctor did not turn from her” and that it was just her being sick. John told Elizabeth that he came forward and confessed to Danforth that he committed adultery. This relates to the universal theme that reputation and respect is important to the Proctors by trying to protect eachs reputation by Elizabeth lying to save him and John trying to confess that Abigail is trying to kill his wife to take her place.
Furthermore, Giles Corey goes on to get pressed due to not wanting to take the charge of witchcraft and naming the other villagers names to the court officials. During this scene Giles is brought out in front of the village by the court to be pressed. While they go on putting extra stones on giles chest. Danforth asks Giles to “say the name of the man and he’ll be set free” but giles not wanting to reveal the man and have him arrested he simply says “More stones” which then leads to the death of him.
