2.1 Background
Nepal’s theoretical hydroelectric potential is billed at 83,000 MW and an established inventory of feasible sites total about one third of the above figure (MoWR 1981). A whole generation in Nepal has been consumed by this seductive dream of hydro potential that the cascading water of this land is supposed to hold and the hydro-dollar bonanza it is supposed to get after exporting to

Under the guidance and mentoring of Milind Kumar the team achieved success well under the time frame for the project. Milind Kumar made sure SA Water has been able to achieve an optimum management of project risks by adopting the (Design Build Operate Maintain (DBOM) delivery model. This contracting methodology was cost effective, with SA Water only paying the fixed lump sum costs of the plant and SA Water retains ownership of the critical water security asset. The DBOM contract model also has early…

The environmental impacts are straightforward, and thus a more obvious target for policies aiming to reduce the environmental impacts from resource use. The use of fossil fuels and global warming potential and potential acidifying effect. Use of specific metals, where there is a clear and linear relationship to environmental impacts from metal extraction and refining. A reduction in the use of these metals will lead to a direct reduction in the associated impacts. Area occupation, where it is the resource use itself that is of environmental concern. A reduction in area occupation will reduce the pressure on biodiversity. Construction materials, where the resource use drives the waste stream, albeit mostly with a significant delay…

Hydropower has been in use in the U.S. since the late 1800’s and the origins of the technology reach back thousands of years and across the globe. Ancient cultures from Greece to Rome to China used water-powered mills to make their lives easier by harnessing the power of water. The Romans would use wheels placed in streams and rivers to power grain grinders, saw mills, and even water pumps. Today hydropower has taken on an enormously different purpose not even conceived by those who first considered it. The Hoover Dam in Nevada, named for President Herbert Hoover, who was personally involved in the construction discussions concerning the location, cost and safety of the dam(desertusa) It is a project of the Bureau of Reclamation, Department…

A hydroelectric dam is complex and hard to set up. To create a hydroelectric plant, it typically takes a large river with a steep drop in elevation. The greater the drop and amount of water, the more electricity is generated from the greater potential energy the water has when it's higher up. At the bottom of the a dam, there is an intake where gravity forces the water in and through a section called the penstock. The flowing water turns a blade on a shaft of the generator or motor to produces electricity. The generator works when a magnet moves past a conductor, causing electricity to flow. At the end, the water flows through a small outflow tunnel back to the river.…

The major area of strength in the management of the project is that the project was covered with four phases: inception, development, implementation, and closeout (Anbari, n.d.). In the inception phase, there was already a vision of what the Guri dam will be like. Its purpose is also identified such that it will serve as a reservoir which could store a large amount of water. It was also in this phase that the cost of the project was estimated. Furthermore, this project has seen the need of help from the international companies because of a lack of national knowledge in dam construction. This project also sought for quality. According to Anbari (n.d.), quality and sustainable development in Edelca’s management…

The Kalabagh dam controversy has been the highlight of attention since a long time now. Every now and then an issue is raised and left unsorted leaving the related provinces further confused as Pakistan’s government has not been able to decide between the two contrasting point of views since the last 27 years (1984, since its design was presented)(Iftikhar,2005) . The basic issue Kalabagh dam project is facing is the different point of views the main territories of Pakistan have. Sindh assumes that if this project is not stopped and allowed to resume the province it would be deprived of their share of water and their land would turn into a desert ultimately, flood cultivation in riverain areas would be reduced. Khyber Pakhtoon’s opposing statements were that is this dam was given a green signal as it is already known that Sindh is very prone to water logging and salinity problems high reservoir water levels could cause cultivation problems, a massive amount of people would have to be dislocated for the project etc. Punjab so far is the only province supporting the building of Kalabagh dam. According to Punjab if this project is completed it would not only benefit people by getting them rid from multiple issues but also benefit the country by reducing its dependence on foreign funds and opening a vacancy for around 30,000 people during its construction. Other advantages included fulfilling increasing demands of electricity with the number of people and providing irrigation to the river in Sindh. (Khokar, 2008)…
