Project Selected: Adelaide Desalination Plant

Research Problem: South Australia, as the "driest state in the driest (inhabited) continent", experienced severe water shortages during periods of drought. As drought conditions worsened during 2006-7, reduced inflows into the River Murray lead to the introduction of progressively harsher water restrictions and the future of Adelaide's water supply came to the fore as a political issue.

Projects Value Proposition:
Insure water supplies against future droughts by providing a climate-independent water source.
The plant has the capacity to supply up to half of Adelaide's annual water use from desalination.
Reducing reliance on the River Murray and providing additional environmental benefits.

Project Director: Milind Kumar

The Adelaide Desalination Project (ADP) team accomplished to deliver the project’s scope within the original budget of $1.842 billion and 19 days ahead of the originally approved schedule. The project’s clear objectives added a definite business value to the organization SA Water.
Furthermore, the project has been conducted with effectively applying all 9 PMBOK knowledge areas. This effort resulted in the delivery of ADP’s exceptional project outcomes.

Under the guidance and mentoring of Milind Kumar the team achieved success well under the time frame for the project. Milind Kumar made sure SA Water has been able to achieve an optimum management of project risks by adopting the (Design Build Operate Maintain (DBOM) delivery model. This contracting methodology was cost effective, with SA Water only paying the fixed lump sum costs of the plant and SA Water retains ownership of the critical water security asset. The DBOM contract model also has early

Even though the Long Beach desalinization facility was not a success, it broke ground for a more efficient and productive plant in Carlsbad, California. For four years this drought has been destroying the state of California through wildfires and water shortages. Though many methods have been attempted to aid this state in its crisis, the drought is persistent. However, with advances in technology along with the new desalinization facility, the water consumption cut backs, landscaping changes, and new laws, California may have just what it needs to beat the drought and recover. California has taken an economic blow from this drought, and only time will tell whether or not desalinization will be California's…

The Victorian government sought advice from researchers and scientists on the environmental, economic and social impacts. The Environment Effects Statements (EES) outlines the conclusive studies and the effects the WDP will have. Some of the studies include geotechnical and marine based investigations, social impact, cultural heritage and the effect on flora and fauna (Department of Sustainability and Environment 2011). The ‘green light’ was given after studies found no convincing objectives as to why the WDP should not go ahead. In making the decision of implementing and constructing a Desalination plant the state government examined the potential benefits it would create…

ue Davies, a single mother with two school-aged children, was a project manager in Pure Marine’s Membrane and Related Equipment Group. It was a Friday afternoon late in September with Indian Summer in full force. She sat in her office considering how to account for the last $2 million of a $5 million Technical Improvement R&D expenditure that had just arrived in her internal mail for cost allocation. She had originally approved the expenditure over a year ago for Project K(3), but she was now unsure whether to charge the last $2 million to the nearly completed K(3), or to two recently started projects. Since its founding in 1948, Pure Marine had maintained industry leadership in the large-scale provision of clean water. For almost 50 years, the…

Currently we are in a water crisis that is part of the millennium drought. This drought has been going on for some years now and last year was the driest year on record for most of Australia. This drought was partly caused by lack of rainfall. A shortage of water is one of the main issues in third world countries. If we do not do something about this we may revert to being somewhat like a developing country. Our county needs fresh water that is portable and easily accessible. We need water for farming; as you know Australia has plenty of farmland and water is crucial to keeping crops and stock healthy. Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy.…

The water crisis in the world today is leaving over 650 million people without clean drinking water, 2.4 billion people don’t have access to proper sanitation and around 315,000 children die from water caused diseases every year. That’s almost 900 children per day. One of the solutions to help solve this water crisis is to use desalinated water. Desalinated water is when the salt water gets all of the salt taken out of it to make it clean and drinkable. There are many advantages to using desalinated water. Some of these are that there is a massive amount of salt water in the world, the water turns out a lot cleaner than normal fresh water and it is changing the world’s water crisis. It is for these reasons that the use of desalinated water should continue to help solve Australia’s water crisis.…

There is a current demand to expand the plant’s hydraulic capacity to 100,000 m3/day due to pressure of new domestic households wishing to connect to its pipe network. There’s also an existing conventional plant still in operation to accommodate peak loads, however, this is not their preferable solution.…

In a densely populated country like India, water is a very precious resource. Home to approximately 16 percent of the world’s population, India has but four percent of the planet’s water reserves. With this in mind, the location management of Siemens Real Estate in Kalwa, India and EHS opted to implement a wastewater treatment system that would, for the most part, regulate itself – much like a natural wetland. “Environmental, health and safety issues are taken very seriously at the Kalwa site. The decision to install a natural water recycling system here was no coincidence,” says Veerabhadrapp Chaugula, Location Manager at in Kalwa.…
