Divine Command Theory
1.The moral theory of divine command theory is when a person morals depends upon God's command. If God believes that something is right then a person would also believe it is right, if God believes that something is wrong then a person would also believe it is wrong. Whatever God says is valuable to that individual. An objection to this theory would be the argument of different religious views. If an individual was Muslim and another was Christian, the Muslim would argue that the command of God isn't morally correct because he doesn't believe in God. Before this theory can take place you must first determine who is "society." An objection to this theory is similar to divine command in being that your trusting of someone else's command, except instead of God it's the societies. You're believing that societies morals are always correct. An example of why this wouldn't work would be a school shooting. A Principle believes that arming teachers would decrease the amount of school shootings. Society agrees with the principle. There are several reasons to prove this is wrong, but because society agrees with the principle then its valued. Teachers being armed may increases the shootings at school. Also the principle and the society may not have students who attend that school whereas parents who are not part of the society does and they disagree with this resolution. This leads to objection of the principle and society being all good and morally correct. Parents and students who protest this resolution argue how this decision is not right or morally correct. Therefore, the principle and society cannot be trusted. Another objection to this theory would be the notion of "moral progress," is the country getting better now that teachers are armed. Many of the students and parents feel as though the principle and teachers aren't really concerned with the safety of everyone, they are only concerned with their safety. Having an armed teacher can lead to many disasters such as a teacher mistakenly shooting a student or staff, students ganging up on the teacher and taking their weapon, etc. If one of these scenarios took place it will not only help the solution, but it would make it worse. If the problem is weapons why not take weapons out of the school all together. Bringing in a metal detector or increasing security in schools would be a better and safer solution. It would also mean that you're being mindful of everyone's
