Diversity In The Military
Organizations consist of a multitude of different personality types; everyone is not always going to act, think and perform on the same level all the time. What if the differences go beyond personality; such as cultural backgrounds? There are unique challenges that can come with a cultural diverse work environment. However, the benefits of working with diversified team and leaders can transform perspectives and achieve greatness. The military is one of the most culturally diverse work environments. What are the challenges and triumphs in the military that are a result of diversity? Can it leaders be influenced by diversity and are leaders diverse?

The Air Force teaches about the 12 domains of culture which relates to global diversity. Cultural domains are general categories of human communication, beliefs and behavior. The domains are family, religion, gender, politics, economics, language, technology, history, health, knowledge, recreation and time. All cultures share these domains even though they have different ways of expressing them. Society is changing; becoming more accepting and embracing cultural differences and diversity.
A leader needs cultural intelligence to interrupt mannerisms and responses from a person with a different cultural background. I worked with two individuals both from the Philippines. The higher ranking person was younger than the other; it caused tension in the office because in their culture the elder is always respected, so to take orders from someone younger was difficult. I worked out for the best; we were able to see the underlining problems and able to move
