The reactivity series is a list of metals arranged in order of their reactivity based on displacement reactions, reduction of their oxides by hydrogen or carbon, the relative ease of decomposition of their compounds and reactions with oxygen, dilute acids and water. The higher up a metal is in the reactivity series, the more reactive it is. In the experiment conducted, the three metals, magnesium, zinc and copper each had to undergo displacement reactions and reactions with water, oxygen and dilute acids, to arrange them in the order of their reactivity.
Generally, the more easily a metal burns in air to form an oxide, the higher up it is in the reactivity series. It was observed that both zinc and magnesium burned in air to form their corresponding metal oxides (magnesium oxide and zinc oxide) but copper did not undergo any such reaction. As such, this proves that magnesium and zinc are higher up in the reactivity series than copper.
Magnesium, copper and zinc were also tested with hydrochloric acid (reaction with dilute acid). Magnesium and zinc both underwent reactions with the dilute acid and were each able to produce metal salts (magnesium chloride and zinc chloride respectively). As such, it can be said that both of them are very reactive metals. Copper however, did not undergo any reaction with the dilute acid, indicating that it is not as reactive. It can therefore be said, again, that magnesium and zinc are higher up in the reactivity series than copper.
In addition, the three metals were tested, using displacement reactions to derive the level of their reactivity. Displacement reactions occur between metals and solutions of metal salts. A metal will displace another metal which is lower than itself in the reactivity series from a solution of the metal salt.     Abstract: The main objective of this experiment was to use to the reaction between zinc and iodine to examine the validity of the Law of Conservation of Mass and the Law of Constant Composition. The Law of Constant Composition was tested by determining the mass of each of the reactants, zinc and iodine, and comparing their total to the mass of the zinc iodide product plus the excess zinc.     In the first reaction, magnesium was burned to produce magnesium oxide. The reaction produced a bright light, which is evidence of a chemical change. The second reaction occurred as a result of solid magnesium reacting with hydrochloric acid. The reaction produced heat and bubbles, both indications of a chemical change. A wood splint was used to determine that the gas produced was hydrogen gas, hence the other product is magnesium dichloride. In the third reaction, ammonium carbonate was heated to decompose into two gases, due to the absence of anything solid or liquid following the reaction. A wood splint was used to determine that carbon dioxide was present, since the lit splint was extinguished when put in the test tube. Therefore, the other product is ammonium oxide. The fourth reaction occurred between calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. When mixed, the two reactants produced a clear aqueous solution, calcium chloride, water, and a gas. The gas was concluded to be carbon dioxide, since the wood splint was extinguished after it was exposed to the gas in the test tube. In the fifth reaction, the two reactants, copper(II) chloride and zinc produced a permanent color change in the solid substance in the aqueous solution. The remaining solid appeared to be black reddish and concluded to be copper, where the aqueous solution is zinc chloride.
