Despereaux Theme
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo is a about a nonconformist small mouse named Despereaux who falls in love with a Princess in a French Castle during medieval times, and all of his problems stem from him being different from other mice, in the castle. This novel is for reader 9-12 and is a fantasy. This allows the author to have talking rodents that could communicate with humans. It allows the author to explore the theme of light and darkness and what these themes mean to each character.
This book was very interesting to me because I had never read a book like it, where the author repeatedly breaks the fourth wall. And it is not in a condescending manner, or to belittle the reader, but to give the reader information, to direct their

I start reading this book with bad mood. I hate to read books, especially the book not written by English. It will always be a disaster for someone to read the book that not written by their first language. However, this book really blows my mind. Bod Focazio and his special style of humorous told me this is a knowledgeable and fun book. This book gives me a lot of things that will be used in the future; this book really is a guide to me. One day, if I could be a successful person, this book really played an important role for that. A great gift to his dad and his dad must be very proud of him.…

When you have such elegantly written work, it puts the reader constantly wanting more. But with the occasional wall, I found myself rather quickly skimming through to get back to the actual storyline while previous astonishments remained fresh. This ultimately creates several moments that the reader becomes disconnected from the book and often times misses out on juicy information sometimes embedded in the babbling.…

One of the most prominent being the fact that this is a very philosophical book. Before each chapter are excerpts from ‘journals’ that make you think. They also correlate very closely with the content featured on each chapter. Another reason I enjoyed this read was because of the vivid descriptions. At one point the book describes a scene that was part of the first book, but then shows with excellent word choices the ways that the scene has changed over thousands of years. A third reason is how relatable the characters are. Throughout the book many events occur, and the book allows you to easily tell what each character’s reaction is. Also, the characters are not too perfect, or in other words their reactions are something we may experience ourselves.…

Despereaux is a sickly mouse who always ran temperatures and fainted at loud noises. The moment he was born, he was classified as “different”, because he was born with his eyes open and had large ears. Then, as he grew up, he became more and more different by letting a human touch him and even speak to a human. Despereaux could hear the music which the other mice couldn’t hear and he could read. He always read the story about a knight and a fair maiden, and he was almost the only person who knew about love. Despereaux is polite as he says words like “pardon” and speaks softly, unlike his brother Furlough. He is dreamy, because when Furlough told him that he was in a lot of trouble with the mouse council, he didn’t seem scared at all and was still talking about love and bravery. Despite being different, Despereaux also makes an effort to not be a disappointment to his parents and usually conforms and does what he is told to do. His infatuation for Princess Pea made him so lovesick that even when he was sentenced to the dungeon to be eaten by the rats, he was still dreamy about love.…
