Descriptive Essay: The Flight To Kansas City
My heart beats like a drum as I board the plane to Kansas City. The airport intercom comes on, and I hear, “Attention all passengers, the flight to Kansas City is now boarding.” I give my mom and dad one last hug and walk slowly to the door. I find my seat and sit down.
Woosh! The jet engines start up, and we’re off. My ears pop, and I can only hear the beating of my heart. As we head over the Red River, the clouds began to thicken. The flight attendant asks me if I want a drink.
I politely say, “Can I please have a lemonade?”
Then I look through the window, and we are above the marshmallow clouds. I finish my drink, and we start descending down toward the dark thick clouds.
The pilot says in a shaky voice, “We are approaching a strong storm. Everyone please stay seated with your seatbelt fastened.”

Boom! The plane starts shaking, and all we can see are white circles...it is snow! The plane continues to shake back and forth. I can see the runway lights ahead. Everything is quiet, and then a few seconds later, Bam, we are on the runway. The pilot puts on the breaks. Our bodies fall forward. Then we stop, and a sigh of relief exits my body.
I exit the plane, and I see my grandma waiting for me at the airport. I’m glad to see her smiling face. She hugs me and asks, “How was your flight”. I just

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

It was too late. I couldn’t possibly return. Not after what I’d done. I had to live on the ground from then on, but all my life I’ve been in the sky. I didn’t know how to survive on the ground but the birds, my cousins, they had adapted so I could to. The clouds rippled under me, before, I had never dared go below them. I had everything I needed back home so why would I venture into the unknow, the unsafe. But, I didn’t have a home and I couldn’t fly forever. I started lowering closer to the clouds.…

Overwhelmed. The only word I can think of when the flight attendant calmly says, “Welcome to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, you may now unfastened your seatbelts.” Tears fell from my eyes and all the emotions that I was feeling for the last 4 hours suddenly began pouring out. I had never been to Haiti and the only mindset of it I had was that there was killing and kidnapping. I was extremely anxious because of that. “NO!, YES!, NO!, YES!, NO!!”, my conflicted mind begins to yell. I couldn't believe that I was actually there. Holding up the line, I got off the plane as slowly as possible. Ironically, being up in the air was much more relieving than being on the grounds IN HAITI !. “Daph, you’ll be alright,” my mom says. “Hopefully,” I mumbled. I thought to myself that maybe just maybe I will actually enjoy it.You will never actually understand the importance of bigger things without appreciating the little things…

Right before take-off I remember everything. Everyone pushing and shoving to get all their bags in the overhead storage bins, the flight attendants getting angered with people telling them to be seated. All the screens in the plane turn on and give the same white screen up until the pilot turns on the GPS system and then all you see is the plane in Miami and a map that goes all the way to Jerusalem with a blue line in between Miami and Jerusalem. Then right after the TVs come on…

Regardless, I sang my preferred song “Hit the road Jack, don’t come back no more no more...”, and I pulled up my hands from the clutch levers and hit the road. My eyes were traveling from speedometer to the street and from street to speedometer. I was so excited watching the speedometer needle going up; by the time I was moving my eyes from the speedometer to the street, I never expected to see a car, that close to me coming out of the alley. The distance was so close. I held the clutch strong, but it was too late. I crashed into the car and in an unwanted move I was flying in the sky and waiting for which terminal I would arrive in.…

It was a smooth night flight and for a change even turbulence seemed to be having a day off. But about twenty minutes later, the plane sharply jolted back and forth. It was sharp enough to grab everybody’s attention. A cold shiver ran down my spine and I quietly scolded myself for visualizing all those movies about plane crashes in just a fraction of a second. I hadn’t even calmed my nerves down when suddenly extreme turbulence started occurring, making the plane lurch sideways and bags started falling from the upper luggage compartments. I could hear faint cries accompanied by nervous laughter around when the pilot made an announcement that the plane had merely gotten stuck in an air pocket and there was nothing to worry about. But just to add up to our nervousness, the cabin lights started flickering and in a minute, we were surrounded by utter darkness. The roaring of the engines, the whispering of people everything went as silent as a grave and all I could hear was the spooky whoosh of the wings against the wind.…
