Decoration Day Analysis
One of the similarities In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Drive By Truckers’ “Decoration Day” include how both the families are fighting for unknown reasons, it is basically a tradition for them. For instance, the singer in “Decoration Day” states “ I never knew how it all got started” when he spoke of the feud. This shows that The father never told his son, the singer, why they were quarreling. If the father knew why he was fighting, it would make sense for him to tell his son so he would know what his family was fighting for. Meaning The father must really not know, just like the Montagues and Capulets, they just fight even if they don't know why. If the singer is the one looking for love, perhaps Mr. Jones is trying to help the singer find love. And if Mr. Jones is trying to help the singer by taking him somewhere to look at beautiful women it would make sense that the singer is trying to get over someone. Furthermore, when Benvolio tries to convince Romeo to go to Juliet’s party he says “Go thither, and with unattainted eye compare her face with some that I shall show, and I will make thee think thy swan a crow.”. This shows that Benvolio wants Romeo to go to Juliet’s party so he can compare Rosaline To other beautiful women. By doing this Benvolio helps Romeo get over Rosaline and find another love. So ultimately, one significant connection between Romeo And Juliet and “ Mr. Jones” is the friendships between Mr. Jones and the singer and Romeo and Benvolio, because they both tried to help their friend get over someone.
