Darry In The Outsiders

In S.E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, the character Darry is profoundly different on the outside than on the inside. To begin with, Darry is like a wolf on the exterior, but more like a puppy on the inside. Darry is like a wolf because he is protective of his family, fierce and angry under a cool exterior. For example, he is protective and angry when he yells at and hits Pony when they are arguing after Pony falls asleep in the lot. On the other hand, he is like a puppy in that he is vulnerable. Darry shows vulnerability when he cries in the hospital when Pony comes back from running away.
Secondly, he is like both a diamond and coal. Darry is like a diamond because on the exterior he seems tough and reserved. He seemed tough
