Creative Narrative Entitled: "Birthday Surprise"
The hours neared towards my very special day. I was nestled deep in comfort and warmth as I awaited the ear drumming beeps of my alarm clock. I turned to look at the digital clock and its luminous numbers covered by a thin layer of glass; it was 11:00p.m. It had only been a few hours since the drowsiness had overwhelmed me, like being pulled into a deep well. Soon the heaviness of my head brought me back down to rest upon the soft, silky smooth pillow. I awoke to my alarm clock and swiftly moved my hand towards the rectangular box and halted so that my hand hovered over the protruding button and brought my hand down hard upon the cold plastic and the beeping ceased. I rose from my mattress and drew back the coarsely textured curtains to reveal the searing sun beaming at me, like a blinding light, lightening up the world to bring forth a wonderful and happy day with children playing joyfully on the rusted swings in the park. It was almost picturesque. There was not even a cloud in the sky, although I did feel obliged to go over to those happy children and warn them of the safety issues.

It was my thirteenth birthday today. I was becoming a teenager, the adolescent that I had been dreaming of becoming, there was going to be a whole new set of rules. Yet the day would unfold not as I had either intended or expected. I went to the door and gripped the rounded door knob firmly twisting it with ease, slowly tensing my muscles and pulling it open and then releasing the door with a flick of the wrist so that it moved back to a standstill position completely shut. I knew my mother would be awaiting my arrival in the kitchen any moment as my alarm is loud and you can nearly hear it from everywhere in the house. She would have been up for a few hours labouring away in the sauna like kitchen preparing a feast almost fit for a king. I pondered at the hours ahead. Although at around twelve oclock I was departing to my fathers taking the form of public transport known as a bus.

Ordinarily, the sun’s light captured everything in sight like a mother hugging a child and giving it warmth. From the dark oak bed, I rose because of the unpleasant bites of mosquitoes. The Civil War is always on my mind. After a most successful battle yesterday when our soldiers all left home, relief and happiness came to mind, for there was a chance that we would win. Consequently, that would explain the surge of energy running through my body after waking up. Starting off with breakfast, I walked to my kitchen, the wood underneath my feet start to creak. The closer I walked to the kitchen, the warmer and cozier the atmosphere became. My servant, Julia, prepared breakfast for me today similar to many other days, I always wonder what will breakfast will be. Fresh eggs from my brown feathered hens were soft surrounded by creamy goat cheese, and well-cooked toast was on the plate this morning. Enjoying the meal is a morning ritual,…

Today is perhaps one of the most important days of my life. It is the day I take my placement exam that determines which major you will be put into at the higher learning institution. Shakily I finish getting dressed for the day, I am adorned in a pair of navy pants and a grey button up with the number 84 on the cuff. Each year the society gives a number to every child born. I was the 84th child of the year so that is the number I was assigned, many of my other classmates have number ranging from 20 to over 200. I slip out of my room and jog to the end of my hall barely catching the last lift to the 97th floor where the test is administered. Not everyone gets invited to secondary school, for 75% of the world primary is the end, they didn’t pass, and would be taught trade jobs with little opportunity for advancement. Due to this pressure of the test looms over me and the memory of leaving my mother and family take over my mind almost daily.…

The job of the first person that wakes up is to open all windows and doors of the house. You can smell the cooking of eggs, and the making of Cuban coffee. Inside of my aunt’s house I smelled the breakfast she cooked, the flowers from her backyard, and the scent of soap from the bathroom. The hills surrounding the town reflected the rising sun’s light on the dewy grass. The sound of horses galloping enters the house as they pass by. Noises gradually increase throughout the day, but as the day dies out so does all the sounds. At night the town is quiet. The streetlights were dim, but the moon was as white as paper and the stars bright as diamonds. Families are in their homes, eating, talking, playing dominoes, or getting ready for bed. I enjoyed nighttime because my family always stayed up late to talk and laugh. Every night was the same routine. I ate, showered, and laughed until I was…

In the wee hours of the morning my life is the embodiment of a living, breathing dichotomy. Awakening with a wry little smile on my face, I knew I had dreamed of the river, big brown trout, and sweet 3wt bamboo rods. My body screams – “Where’s the coffee”, while my brain questions the sanity of getting up this early on a Saturday. Oblivious to the cacophony, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Betraying logic, they forewarn that this pre-dawn moment was the premonition of a great day ahead.…

It was six-thirty in the morning, when fourteen-year-old Alisha Wilson's alarm went off. She sat up, promptly quieting the screaming electronic. Rubbing her eyes awake, she realized today was Monday. Normally this was a day she usually enjoyed; however, this particular morning was different. It was the first day of school, in a new town with new people. A million negative thoughts ran though her head, and the stress made her uneasy. Bang! “Wake up, wake up, wake up!!!” Alisha's silence was shattered by her five-year-old, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed sister, Marsha. Marsha had barged her way into Alisha’s room and proceeded to jump on her bed. “Today is day one, today is day one!” She exclaimed, jumping up and down, causing her curly hair to bounce.…

I remember the first time I stayed awake throughout the night till a beaming light peaked through the window and hit my face like the touch of a baby's hand. Although the morning had risen, the moon had just come up. In the intensity of rushing to school, the need for pleasing others with looks has gone past me. The knots and tangles I feel in my stomach have also reached my hair as I pull parts of my day out of the strands.…

After tending to my plants, missing Frasier, reading a bit, and doing some yoga, I decided to visit my boyfriend and see what the outside world was up to. He wanted to watch a movie, but I explained my assignment and we went for a walk instead. A few friends came over to chat, reminding me that I had made a plan or two without considering I would be unreachable. I left to check out the pet store, looking for a potential addition to the fish family. I wrote in my notebook “Engineer Goby” and immediately longed for Google. All I knew about this Goby was that no matter what tank I described to this employee “he would fit in.”…

Beep! Beeeep! Beeeeeeep! The alarm gave out a loud piercing screech. Shattering my magical dreams, and damaging my own eardrums. I jumped out of bed abruptly, my heart pounding inside. I slammed the off button on the alarm as hard as a could. 6:00 A.M. You can tell it's early when there's no sunlight seeping through the cracks of the blinds. I walked across the dark room, stabbing my foot in every corner. My hands waving in the air, trying to feel where the bathroom light switch is. Finally, my hands are enveloped onto to the switch and I flipped it on. Squinting my eyes while trying to adjust to the bright light. I go to the faucet where I splashed cold water on my, face, letting the droplets run through my cheeks and trickle down my chin.…

“Oh, the joy of being jet lagged,” I think to myself sarcastically as I stare at the bright, neon green numbers from the overhead clock that read 4:30 A.M. After five minutes of aimlessly flipping through Indian channels on my grandparents’ T.V., I sluggishly stand and walk towards the front door; catching a glimpse of my unfamiliar, tanned reflection staring back at me in a mirror—my skin’s olive tone remains untouched by the usual layer of pale foundation I pile on. I stumble upon my dad’s camera, take its bulky frame in my hands, and walk through to the front door. I sit silently on the porch, enveloped by the tranquility of dawn; the only noise comes from my camera's mechanical sound as I modify each setting. Oblivious to the time I had expended fiddling with the camera, the sunrise’s orange-hued rays begin to seep through the thick gray clouds, and the village slowly comes to life. An old woman draws my attention as she…

I awoke to the sounds of birds singing, and the light shining through the window of my bedroom. I opened my eyes and stretched my pale arms towards the ceiling. I hummed to the tune of one of the many songs I had heard on the radio as I made myself a bowl of Frosted Flakes.…

It was almost the summer time, grass couldn’t have been greener, school was almost out, and I was so excited to return home so I could play outside. The day seemed like any other; I was picked up from school, given a snack, watched over as I did my homework, and then I was given permission to go outside. I had rushed up the stairs to change out of my uniform and get into something more comfortable. On that day, unlike any other day, my older sister, Briana, was already home, but my…

The blaring ring of the alarm clock runs through my ears, marking the end of my pleasant six-hour sleep. I’m looking at the time and fumbling my hand next to me, managing to hit the snooze button and relapse back to my sleep. Repeating this several times, I eventually decided to get up, and turned off the alarm. I grabbed the towel lying on top of my chair, and turn around only to sneak a glance at the time. I stumble through the bathroom, flick the light switch brace myself for the glare of the lights as I struggle to open my eyes. After taking a nice, hot shower, I quickly got dressed and made my way to the kitchen. After my breakfast, I woke up my mom and told her to drop me off. She got up, and drove me to school.…

    A Happy Day Turned Bad

It was a beautiful day. The sun cast it’s radiant rays upon a little small village in China. Little dust of ivory clouds navigated itself around the sky. On that day a naive girl of four years-old sat in her concise house of only one room., no bigger than a mini garage. An average size twin bed faced the wall, a bed that three people shared every night. A cheap old fashioned stove adjacent to the bed, and a cabinet where three utensils, three plates, and three pairs of clothes lay. I sat on the cold stone floor wearing my pink little summer dress while playing with my rusty train set. All days were the same for me. My parents both worked from when the sun rose to when the sun set, only coming home to make dinner. Life for me was quite lonely. I ran free through the village like a wild child, for no one cared. I became independent the day I could walk.…
