Hum/111 Week 3 Assignment
Decisions
“You can do it...you can do it,” I command myself in the full length mirror hanging from the wall.
Today is perhaps one of the most important days of my life. It is the day I take my placement exam that determines which major you will be put into at the higher learning institution. Shakily I finish getting dressed for the day, I am adorned in a pair of navy pants and a grey button up with the number 84 on the cuff. Each year the society gives a number to every child born. I was the 84th child of the year so that is the number I was assigned, many of my other classmates have number ranging from 20 to over 200. I slip out of my room and jog to the end of my hall barely catching the last lift to the 97th floor where the test is administered. Not everyone gets invited to secondary school, for 75% of the world primary is the end, they didn’t pass, and would be taught trade jobs with little opportunity for advancement. Due to this pressure of the test looms over me and the memory of leaving my mother and family take over my mind almost daily.
I slip into the cool seat of table 84, the same number I was assigned on the first day of secondary, the

I take my pre portioned meal and make way to one of the large tables spanning the Mess. So many thoughts travel through my head, but one continues to pop up. Do I even want to be overseer? I had never asked myself this in the past year, it was always just expected that Angelique or I would inevitably receive the title. My wants and dreams were never taken into the mix this whole time. I am just a walking statistic, one of a small group that could possibly fit the role. With this sour taste in my mouth I finish my tray and make my way to the commissioner. I must go alone. One hand clutched on the diary another on the wall I ride the lift to his office. Beep, Beep, Beep, the elevator alerts me of each passing floor.

The biggest breaking story I chose was about the Afghans heading to the polls to vote amid the threats of insurgent attacks. On the CNN website, it seemed like the story was less detailed and descriptive than the other sites. Even though it covered the situation in Afghanistan, the information was delivered in a more passive way than FOXNews and MSNBC, almost as if it was a more opinion-based article. I noticed also that some of the key points that were covered on the CNN site were also covered in the other sites. Information on how many candidates were competing for election and how many seats were available in parliament seemed to be a point that all of the sites included. One main difference in the information that CNN covered, compared to the other sites, was it didn’t discuss or report anything about deaths during the election process. While news of different attacks were covered, like a roadside bomb blowing out the glass of a governor’s vehicle for example, reporting that there were no injuries quickly followed. There weren’t many links included on the page that related to the story. However, the one link that was there was a video that helped reinforce what the article covered. Other related links lead to topics on Afghanistan and the Afghanistan war. The commentaries on the CNN article were different because they described different accounts of what happened. Some discussed people were still going to the polls to vote while others came from candidates in the election.…

We are all aware of the illnesses that are developing in our community. Obviously, this is not genetic because it is attacking various members of our community and has done personal research to link the illnesses to our surrounding environment. I have found information in which the community should be aware. After extensive research, I have discovered the symptoms are because of the gas company not following proper procedures while digging in our community. I have spent several months coming to the solution and connecting the problem to the gas company. I first expecting it was something in the water because it seems to be affecting more people in neighborhoods closer to the drilling sites. I am afraid to inform everyone that it will be in all our drinking water before soon.…

My view on the subject of looking for more oil by drilling in places that have not been checked before is it is unnecessary. If the companies that put such effort toward blocking attempts to phase in more alternative sources for power put the effort into developing these alternatives sources the world would be much healthier. The oil industry is one of the richest and most powerful industries in the world today and this industry is fighting against the change to cleaner and more environmentally safe energy alternatives. The reason for the oil industry to resist this change is pure greed. The industry stands to lose a great deal of money if the United States government phases out the use of fossil fuels.…

In Peter Singer’s 1972 post titled “Famine, Affluence and Morality”, he conveys that wealthy nations, for example the United States, has an ethical duty to contribute much a lot more than we do with regards to worldwide assistance for famine relief and/or other disasters or calamities which may happen. In this document, I will describe Singers objective in his work and give his argument with regards to this problem. I will describe 3 counter-arguments to Singer’s view which he tackles, and after that reveal Singer’s reactions to those counter-arguments. I will explain Singer’s idea of marginal utility and also differentiate how it pertains to his argument. I will compare how the ideas of duty and charity alter in his suggested world. To conclude, I will provide my own reaction about this problem supporting singer’s argument. Should wealthier nations have a moral duty to relieve poorer nations if a disastrous event were to happen? I think that we all must contribute in times of need even if this means substantially modifying the way in which we live for the objective of assisting other people so long as it doesn't cause us to suffer.…

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a diagnoses for individual with a group of complex disorders of brain development. This disorder is characterized in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 68 children are diagnosed as being on the spectrum, with boys being four to five times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls. As there is no cure for autism, research is on-going to help children and families to decrease the negative effects autism has on those with the diagnoses and this includes studies on medications. In the article, Cognitive Effects of Risperidone in Children with Autism and Irritable Behavior, the effects of the popular drug Risperidone is tested on children on the autism spectrum who also have irritable behaviors, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or disruptive behavior disorders. The focus is on what question the authors are trying to answer by doing this research and what hypothesis is being tested and the concepts that were applied in this process. Other important aspects of this study include the statistical analysis employed in this studies, the variables used and the possibility more and/or different variables may have been used to enhance the outcome of the study. As with any statistical research study, there are going to be limitations. The fact that autism affects so many people, the better understanding we can gain about possible medications and therapies will be helpful to families and educators of people on the autism spectrum.…
