Costa Rican-Lebanese Immigrant Family
I come from a large Costa Rican-Lebanese immigrant family. My parents believed that it was their duty to teach my siblings and I their native languages: English, French, Spanish, and Arabic. It was also their intention to cultivate my native roots and culture. My family’s culture, assisted in shaping all aspects of my life, socially and academically. My mother is Lebanese and my father is Costa Rican which creates diverse traditions and tendencies. However, the most unique trait of my family is the dynamic created by having a total of seven children in my household. My parents native traditions and cultures helped shape the individual I am and the individual I hope to become. My family history is omnipresent in my values and personality. For example, my dad’s Spanish roots molded me into a determined and self-sufficient person.
Volunteer work has also been an activity that I like to include in my life. I currently volunteer at Saint Francis House feeding the

I have received the Spanish 3 award, the Lamp of Knowledge Award, and the Principal’s Honor Roll. The Lamp of Knowledge is an award given to students who maintained all A’s or B’s for the entire four quarters. I was given the Spanish 3 Award for maintaining all A’s in the class and engaging with the teacher and students. I was one of the few people in my grade who was chosen to be able to enroll in the Spanish Honor Society. It is an academic honor society focused on Spanish language excellence in secondary education and promotes a continuity of interest in Spanish studies.
I was heartened by the unique campus environment that is home to thousands of students from all over Florida and the world. I am drawn to how the university was established as a non-segregated university. FSU symbolizes unity and the willingness to give everyone equal opportunities. The level of commitment FSU has to its students is very

Each year in November I volunteer at The Basket Brigade. We assemble boxes full of food for the less fortunate to have for Thanksgiving/the holiday season. After assembling the boxes we each take 4-5 and deliver them to anyone who has requested them. This opportunity is very eye opening, it shows you how much a little kindness goes and how thankful people are that you care. I have also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for the last few years. This organization allows you to help pack food to send to children across the…

My father is incarcerated right now, but he is coming home in a couple of weeks. Our family is strong and full of compassion and love. We make the most out of nothing. Booker T. Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always had a portuguese presence in my life. When I think back on my childhood, I think of Maria. Up until I was in elementary school I thought Maria was somehow related to me; although I wasn't sure how. As I got older, Maria began to explain to me her roots. She told me how she immigrated to America from her small village in Portugal. Maria explained that she needed to move here in order to provide for her family. She was in search for the american dream for her family. She slowly began to incorporate her portugese ways into my life, whether it was portugese rolls with butter, portuguese soup or texting in portuguese. Although, I learned a lot from Maria I still never fully understood her culture. Portugal…

For my interview, I chose to have a very close family member tell part of her life story, For the purpose of this interview, we will call her Karla. She came to the United States with her parents when she was a little girl. She grew up in the middle of two cultures, exposed to two different ways of life. She always manages to be in a great mood and I can always count on her opinion on many subjects, with the certainty she always tries to approach every subject with a non-bias opinion. She grew up knowing the good and bad about being a bilingual child, raised with parents that did not speak Spanish. She is always telling us stories on “when she was growing up.” She managed to put herself through college with no family financial assistance.…

Born to immigrant parents in the United States has had its challenges. I was raised in a Greek household with Greek morals and ideals, which at often times clash with those of American culture. The outside world is perceived inversely when your inside world is conducted in a completely different manner. However, having been born to immigrant parents I have the ability to empathize with other cultures. This is a gift, which in this field I have often times used.…

Service is the reason I would be a good candidate for the National Junior Honor Society because I have volunteered in the past and would like to volunteer more in the future. I like volunteering because I enjoy helping people. I would like to join the National Junior Honor Society because I like school, I like to study and I would like to do more volunteer work. One of the things I did was volunteer in the World Refugee Day. I drew designs on people’s hands with henna, I also distributed water to the people who were there to watch, and I gave raffle tickets to the people who were participating in the program.…

Growing up in a community that is mostly Hispanic creates a type of shield, not allowing for different cultures or ethnicity to diversify the community. A Hispanic family living in such an isolated community takes a toll on the way we view the world. This environment has indulged my curiosity. Being the second youngest sibling of my family of seven has allowed me to learn from my older brothers, and have the privilege to be a leader to my little brother and serve as a role model to him. Though none of my family members went to college, and my parent’s highest education being a high school diploma, it hasn’t discouraged me to follow their footsteps, but rather give the encouragement to dedicate myself to be the first generation and in my whole…

I serve the community through many different ways. I volunteer to help with things going on around the community, for example, I have signed up to help with registration for a race that was going on at a local gym. I have also contributed in helping kids and adults with special needs. I helped at Farm, teaching these people how to ride horses and communicate with others. Riding horses helped them learn how to use their body more efficiently. I feel as all of us that had the chance to contribute in helping them changed these adults and kids lives. They also changed ours on how we look at people. At the farm I also have taught at horse camp with the 8 and under kids. Being a counselor isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. You really have to teach the kids good communication with others around them and also some rules and morals that they will hopefully carry on in life. Like, forgiving each other, and not to hold grudges against one another.…
