My father’s parents were born in a small village in the Peloponnese. They were kind and humble people that eventually made their way to Athens. My mother’s parents were born in Kafkaso, a town in Minor Asia, which at that time belonged to Greece. With the war of 1921, the Turks forced my mother’s parents to flee to Athens. They were wealthy and proud, as were many Pontian Greeks at that time. Both of my parents were born in Athens in the fifties. My mother left Athens in 1969, America bound and my father followed soon after. Born to immigrant parents in the United States has had its challenges. I was raised in a Greek household with Greek morals and ideals, which at often times clash with those of American culture. The outside world is perceived inversely when your inside world is conducted in a completely different manner. However, having been born to immigrant parents I have the ability to empathize with other cultures. This is a gift, which in this field I have often times used. One of the traditions that have been passed down in my family, thanks to our culture, is attending church every Sunday. Church, for Greek-Americans, is more than just a place of worship; it is also a communal gathering. Through church attendance we maintain our religious traditions, language, Sunday school, even meet our future mates. Even though some Greeks marry outside of the culture most choose partners with the same ethnic background. Many may argue that this is a form of brainwash from our parents but those of us that have married outside our culture tend to think our parents were correct. In addition to attending church nearly every Sunday and attempting to stick to our own, Greeks are very affectionate people. As a race, we publicly and obviously like to show our love for one another. At times, I have found my non-Greek friends taken aback by my affectionate demeanor. We kiss friends upon meeting, touch

Wow, this quote from, Ethno Autobiography, written by Jürgen Werner Kremer and R Jackson-Paton really stood out to me in such an enlightening way. I related to this statement because, I feel, that many people whom are, WEIRD, do tend to look upon other peers this way. These types of people don’t take the time to understand someone, get to know them on a personal level – what they have been through, where they lived, defining moments that they have had and finding out their long term and short term endeavors. For instance, one thing that I can relate this to is college applications. Therefore, due to the overpopulated college system we have in place there is no time to holistically get to know a single student, so that’s why doing an analytical…

Family values vary, their opinion varies, and their values are different. Greeks are from a country in Europe, therefore think like most Europeans, and stick together in one community so most of their beliefs are homogenous. My family is all Greek; there has been no change in our nationality since we were born, they were so afraid of diffusion and change. So when homosexuality was introduced to them by me, they were scared and thought of it as a lie and a disease. I was sent to a hypnotherapist and a priest for…

“There’s always an ending to whatever began” is what my long time neighbor, [NEIGHBORS NAME]said the last day she lived near us as our neighbor. Although I rarely see her anymore, she was, and most likely, still the same enthusiastic person she was. She has gave knowledge to not only me, but my also my family. Not only has she been an inspiration to me, but due to her amiability, she has been a muse person brainstorming about how she can make a better community. [NAME HERE ] is significant to me because she has taught me morals in my life to appreciate whatever we have, the importance of helping around the community, and to apply as much effort on whatever must be accomplished.…

    Racial Autobiography

My first awareness of race was when I saw some kid who looks completely different from me. He had completely different skin tone, and in many aspects don't quite look like myself. When I was in China, many of my classmates and peers were all look the same, but different in our own ways. That was the world to me until first grade, the first time of my life to see someone who is another race. He was an Irani. Even though he can speak fluent mandarin, I can tell he is different from us. That was when I first truly aware of race, besides from TV.…

    Learning Autobiography

Reflecting on my learning experiences has, other than test my long term memory, been an eye opening experience on who was a positive influence on gaining knowledge and who wasn’t. My first surprise was the amount of knowledge taught to me by my grandmother, who for many reasons was my main adult influence from 3-10. She instilled in me that knowledge gave me choices in life, she also had to be organised and disciplined with her time as she cared for my two sisters and was partially sighted. She always ensured she had enough time to support and encourage me; she even bought me my first encyclopaedia, although second hand, it was one of my most treasured possessions. One of the greatest lessons she was able to give me was the understanding of different cultures (especially cooking) and beliefs as she was Anglo- Indian and English was her second language and her friends on the estate came from every corner of the globe. In secondary school I was privileged to be taught by one of the most patient, professional and knowledgeable history teachers, Mrs Golding. I never recall her ever raising her voice or embarrassing anyone in front of fellow students. Mrs Golding arranged a guest speaker from the Roman exhibition in Chelmsford, he brought replica shields, armour etc, he started explaining the formations used against certain types of enemy, e.g. cavalry. Mrs Golding decided to go into the playground and role-play the scenarios which was great fun and helped me remember the lesson. I now see we learned more by doing than by just being talked at, which is something I respect and hopefully will implement myself. Mrs Golding arranged a trip to Dover to look at the radar installations and WWII museum. Other than the historical and academic value, she was, I believe, very perceptive…

    Moral Autobiography

Growing up, I was raised with Catholic morals. We went to Church every Sunday; I attended Sunday school and completed both my first communion and my first confirmation. During my entire time in the Catholic Church I never encountered the concept of homosexuality. As I have grown older, I do not attend Church often and wouldn’t consider myself to be a very religious person. College was the time in my life that I was able to explore the idea of having a philosophical tradition in my life. Over the years I have learned to become more accepting and inclusive of all sexual orientations and overall worldviews. This can be seen particularly in my top points on the hermeneutical circle and how I have used my social location to influence my views on justice and sexuality.…

I attended school from first grade to twelfth grade with above average grades in the Fort Bend Independent School District. Before taking this Sociology class, I did not realize how much my life experiences and life chances are greatly influenced by many complex sociological factors. I realize now that using my sociological imagination allows me to connect my personal experiences, behaviors, and attitudes to the larger social structure. Some of the sociological themes that manifest in my life are how gender role socialization, resocialization, and social inequalities have played a role in contributing to my sociological autobiography.…

The first thought that comes to my head when I hear cultural beliefs I think of the things that make a person who they are. Things that people will fight for and stand up for no matter what anyone says or thinks. I, myself am not much about being outspoken, but when it comes to what I believe in and what I value, I will fight for my beliefs and values. According to our text culture is “the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought characteristic of a community or a population”. The culture we are raised in effects our future identity and how others will perceive us. The definition of identity is "the fact of being who or what a person or thing is". I have grown up in Indiana all of my life, but I was born in Iowa. I do not consider myself to be from Iowa because I was too young to remember anything about it. Since I was six months, I have been in Indiana. When I think about my values and beliefs and I would not categorize myself as a ‘traditional’ Midwesterner. My life has and probably will always be different from others, but I know that my belief system came from me and what I think is right and wrong, not from others. I do now recognize that my culture and environment has aided in creating my identity, but I believe that I have taken the negatives, prejudices, and racism that have surrounded me since I was born and created my own set of cultural beliefs. My life has given me the opportunity to become a much-diversified person when it comes to cultural beliefs.…
