Personal Narrative: Mountain Brook Community
Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they …show more content…
The Mountain Brook Community is such an amazing place to live and to be apart of. There are many factors that I think contribute to giving this community its credibility. A few of those factors, other than safety and great educational system, is that we are a community. The definition of community is “ group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common”, and when I see that definition, I immediately see Mountain Brook. The people of Mountain Brook are what make Mountain Brook such a special community. I love living in Mountain Brook because of times like when a friend of mine, a fellow sophomore, was diagnosed with cancer, the whole community came together for support. I love that as a community, we organized multiple different events to show our love and support for a member of the Mountain Brook community. I also love how Mountain Brook provides for all different ages of people in this community. I love the new Cahaba River Walk, off Overton Road, how it is intended for everyone in the community, including pets. The Cahaba River Walk was also funded by individuals of our community and by group donors, and that shows how much our community members care about our city, and I love that about Mountain …show more content…
Any growing city is always needing new improvements, as is the City Mountain Brook. For starters, I believe that the city should invest in railing alongside Cherokee and Overbrook Road to increase driver’s safety. The reason behind the railing alongside those roads is because they are beside steep hills and cliffs and if a car happens to run off the road it would fall off a cliff. That almost happened to some fellow peers of mine who were in a car crash over winter break. Luckily they didn’t go flying down the cliff because a tree had stopped them, but what if the tree wasn’t there? I wonder what would have happened but it probably wouldn’t have been good. Other than investing in railing on Cherokee and Overbrook road, I would like to suggest the purchase of new classroom furniture in the high school. As growing children, we need to treat our bodies right, and by having comfortable classroom furniture, we will be on the right track. Having comfortable classroom furniture will give every student, regardless of shape or size, the chance to fit in their seat comfortably during class. Not only will the new furniture be more comfortable and appealing to us students’ backs, but I believe it will create a more welcoming learning environment with a fresh, clean, modern and relaxing feel to it. I believe we should hold a campaign to raise money in order to buy new and improved classroom

The second organization that I had the opportunity to volunteer for is Goodwill Rescue mission. They created this organization in 1896. Under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence Sutherland, the purpose of the organization moved from being a struggling institution to one with a nationwide reputation. They shared the love of God in Christ by providing food, shelter, spiritual guidance and instruction for the poor and the homeless in Newark. According to Goodwill Rescue mission, they affiliate with helping the individuals directly rather than send them someplace else to fend for themselves. The program is also working with some of these individuals to get them back on their feet to fend for themselves. They have to go through programs if any of them…

Each year in November I volunteer at The Basket Brigade. We assemble boxes full of food for the less fortunate to have for Thanksgiving/the holiday season. After assembling the boxes we each take 4-5 and deliver them to anyone who has requested them. This opportunity is very eye opening, it shows you how much a little kindness goes and how thankful people are that you care. I have also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for the last few years. This organization allows you to help pack food to send to children across the…

There I am sitting in my canoe, I close my eyes and just listen. I listen to the trees swaying in the breeze, the raindrops pitter-patting on my coat, the movement of the paddle as it dips into the water. I picture the beautiful autumn foliage that surrounds me as leaves gently fall from the tree onto the surface of the water and make a print on the water, even if it is only there for a second. As English writer William Hazlitt once said “We do not see nature with our eyes, but with our understandings and our hearts.” This is how I felt out on the river during our trip, I felt like I could really understand and appreciate the beauty and serene peace of being one with nature. I also felt like I could appreciate the care that it takes to keep…

“Slow down, future leaders of America at play,” a sign engrained in my memory as a result of the numerous volunteer trips I took to Mountain Mission School. Mountain Mission School (MMS) is a Christian boarding school and home to many children, who come from devastating backgrounds and poverty. Receiving no government funding, Mountain Mission School located in Grundy, Virginia operates solely on private donations and generous charities from churches all over America. In addition to a school, MMS played a key role in my life. Not only was MMS my home but also my church starting from second grade up until I graduated high school.…

In the wee hours of the morning my life is the embodiment of a living, breathing dichotomy. Awakening with a wry little smile on my face, I knew I had dreamed of the river, big brown trout, and sweet 3wt bamboo rods. My body screams – “Where’s the coffee”, while my brain questions the sanity of getting up this early on a Saturday. Oblivious to the cacophony, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Betraying logic, they forewarn that this pre-dawn moment was the premonition of a great day ahead.…

I volunteered at Texas Humane Heroes, a local animal welfare organization that gives a homeless dog or cat a chance of finding home. It is a nonprofit organization that benefits from the involvement of volunteers. This was a very unique experience because I got to work with a lot of different volunteers and staff members. There were different volunteering opportunities from foster volunteering to helping out around the place. I helped around the place with other volunteers. We cleaned the dog and cat cages and washed their bowls. It wasn’t fun to pick up their waste, but we got to play with the puppies and the kittens. We also had to greet customers and inform them about the cats and the dogs that they had up there. In the afternoon, we had to walk the dogs. So many volunteers and I, took the dogs out.…

In 1752 I was a seventeen year old destitute living in Scotland, Ireland. I had no real skill-trade or education, but with high ambitions to learn and become a collective dependant I would earn a stable lively-hood in one of the New World colonies. I suffered losses of loved who fell sick and died with only a few remaining that were as impoverished as myself. I feared there would be no prospect of a better life in Scotland and contracted myself as an indentured servant for passage to the New World colonies. Along with many others I boarded a New World merchant ship that specialized in the trade of textiles and clothing. In exchange for travel, food, and decent health, I was sold for profit to proprietors in the New World. The voyage to New…

I have been an assistant teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and Acolyte leader. These positions have included teaching a small group of children from the age of three to ten about Jesus and being an altar helper or Acolyte. I have learned compassion working with these children that you cannot get anywhere else. Also at my church, I have gone on four mission trips. On these trips, I have done everything from making beds at a homeless shelter to setting up a firework tent during a thunderstorm. Through mission trips I have been given a servant’s heart and a love for serving.…

I volunteered to attend Monterey Elementary school and Curtis Middle School to present some examples of the things we do in the health academy. For example, we brought some real pig lungs to Monterey and attached them to a tube in order for air to go through, causing it to expand and close. What I enjoyed the most was hearing those children gasp of amazement and look so interested at what they were witnessing. Furthermore, I was very surprised at how smart those kids were. For instance, we would ask them some simple questions, but some of them would tell us facts about the anatomy of a heart. That honestly astonished me but also made me radiant at how our young generation is developing. Another way I make my community better is participate in the fundraising for the varsity school soccer team in order for us to take a part in tournaments and hiking trips. Finally, I believe going to school is a way to help the community because students want to lean towards fields like police officer, doctor, nurse or firefighters and these are a few jobs of all the variety that help out the community by keeping it…

Since I have always been interested in activities that offer opportunities for helping people, I recently volunteered at XXX Hospital. Actually, the purpose of this activity was twofold, both to use my time for assisting the sick and disabled, and to try a hand at working in a medical environment. Both purposes were successfully fulfilled. I really enjoyed seeing that even with my limited knowledge I was able to make a difference in the daily routine of the hospital. My best reward was the grateful smiles of the patients whom I could entertain with my personal stories and divert from the depressing daily reality. As for myself, I would say that these people were also a real support for me as we developed a very friendly relationship that allowed me to share the everyday happenings of my life with these people and make them feel important through giving advice on different issues. In addition, I realized that a medical profession is the best career I could dream of, so comfortably I felt in these surroundings.…
