Personal Narrative: Why I Volunteer At Texas Animal Welfare
I volunteered at Texas Humane Heroes, a local animal welfare organization that gives a homeless dog or cat a chance of finding home. It is a nonprofit organization that benefits from the involvement of volunteers. This was a very unique experience because I got to work with a lot of different volunteers and staff members. There were different volunteering opportunities from foster volunteering to helping out around the place. I helped around the place with other volunteers. We cleaned the dog and cat cages and washed their bowls. It wasn’t fun to pick up their waste, but we got to play with the puppies and the kittens. We also had to greet customers and inform them about the cats and the dogs that they had up there. In the afternoon, we had to walk the dogs. So many volunteers and I, took the dogs out.
Providing the love and care for the animals need can be expensive for them. Therefore, volunteering and taking care of the animal can be rewarding fro them and the animals. I walked, and fed the animals, cleaned their room, played with the puppies and did whatever other jobs that was needed to be done. I learned more about the care of the animal, and seeing how the shelter could make a difference for the animals there. My favorite part of the volunteering is walking the dogs because I really got attached to one of the dog. It was a golden retriever mixed and his name was Patrick. He was a very loud at first but after I got to know him he was a likeable dog. By giving the dogs an opportunity to run through an expanse of grass, it really instills that trust and love. Overall, this volunteering experience has taught me a lot about taking care of animals. Working with the shy dogs taught me to be patient and gentle. Even though the progression is slow, the dog will eventually gain trust and
