Concert Review Of A Concert: Julieta Venegas With Rafa Esparza
The topic I've chosen to write about this week's journal is about a concert I went to this past Monday. Actually, to my surprise, it was not really a concert. The title of the event was Julieta Venegas with Rafa Esparza. Julieta Venegas is a very talented Hispanic singer that was born in Long Beach, California but was raised in Tijuana, Mexico. Rafa Esparza is a Hispanic artist that crafts bricks through the traditions passed on by Mexico's history. Arriving at the event, the lights dimmed down and Esparza took a seat at the center of the stage while Venegas sat behind a piano. Esparza then spoke into the microphone and said," I want a dy** for president. I want a black woman for president. I want an immigrant for president". While this was occurring, Venegas was beautifully singing alongside playing the piano. …show more content…
CrossFade Lab believes in taking two different ideas and finding points of similarity to easily transition from one to another. The goal in mind of this organization is to foment acceptance and action towards controversial ideas that engulf our society like the treatment of different cultures, the treatment of individuals with different sexual orientations, and civil issues. At this event, Julieta Venegas and Rafa Esparza, two different kinds of art found points of similarity to communicate a message of acceptance. After this explanation, the curator interviewed both artists concerning their work and their stance on various issues. Esparza expressed that he is a homosexual and how he has had to adapt with his family and of the such. The performance continued with both artists combining their talents and Esparza even danced with another man while Venegas played a love

The Concert (A Musical Party) is an oil on canvas, Baroque period painting completed by the Flemish painter Theodoor Rombouts circa 1620. The work portrays a group of five costumed musicians around a table covered with a Persian tapestry rug. Of the five performers, there are four men and one woman. The four men are playing various instruments, the woman appearing to be the vocalist. The play of deep shadows and bright highlights present in this painting make the overall use of chiaroscuro more pronounced, reflecting the strong influence of Caravaggio, a revolutionary Italian painter who Rombouts studied under. Caravaggio’s works, which combine the realistic rendering of the human state with a dramatic use of lighting, had a formative effect…

This year’s event we did the theme of Remembering Our Students/ Recordando Nuestros Estudiantes. In relation to the current movements regarding Black Lives Matter, police brutality, Ayotzinapa 43, school shootings, and indigenous women missing. I think this event is important to our campus, because SCSU is a diverse campus with very close minded individuals. So this brings the aspect of culture and tradition with the Dia de Los Muertos celebration and MEChA’s activist focus of political issues. These two combined can provide knowledge and awareness to those students who are unaware or misinformed. As well as taking on the problem of cultural appropriation with the recent American popularization of sugar skulls and Dia de…

The first reading for this week was “The Dark Side of Transnational Latinidad” by Hector Amaya. Going into this reading I didn’t know about Narcocorridos and the impact drugs and violence has had on this music genre. I also, learn about the importance branding to our identity and how branding gives us an aura of authenticity. While I never heard of narcocorridos before I have heard of the name Jenni Rivera. In this reading, I learned the impact Rivera made in the genre and how she shows how women can also become narco-leaders and talks about sexism in narcocorridos.…

On March 22, 2014, the Jazz Band at Lone Star College North Harris performed a total of ten Jazz pieces: Hugh’s Blues, Cantaloupe Island, Gandy Dancer, Horn of Puente, Top Dog, Aaron’s Blues, Mazatlan, Jeannine, There’s Only So Much Oil in the Ground, and Rock This Town. According to the Washington Post, Jazz was the music that originated in Louisiana during the early 1900’s “in the fields where [African American] people worked as slaves and made up songs to express themselves [and] to keep alive the culture and traditions of their African homelands” (Washington Post). Despite slavery legally ending in 1865, African Americans still didn’t have the same rights as white Americans. “Jazz was music that both black…

As far as I am concerned, it is definite that like my parents who transplanted themselves in this country, I too yearn for the American Dream. At home, I am different. I am American. I am a Chicana. I speak English. I dress differently. I may not seem Mexican enough, yet I still share the struggles that are a reality to my parents. I was the little brown girl with an American dream. I never once doubted that dream, so I confidently followed it. My story is not a unique story. This is the story of a person who seeks to be an asset to this country. However, my journey is one that places me in a dissent with those who would rather prefer I do not combat the injustice in my community. For this reason, I am the sole curmudgeon Latine in the perspective of those who are out of reach with my experiences.…

I have chosen to react to the 2004, Sergio Arau film, “A Day Without A Mexican”. This movie examines what might happen if one day a third of the population of the state of California just wasn’t there anymore. As the film progresses we learn that the section of the population that has disappeared is connected by the one fact that they all seem to be of Hispanic heritage. California is isolated from the rest of the country, represented by a strange pink fog, and is on its own to resolve the social, economic, and cultural issues that arise from this event. This film is intended to be a comedy/drama and satirically presents serious issues such as border control, illegal labor, occupational stereotypes and the inability of people, mostly white, to appreciate the Mexicans/Hispanics that they employ without having a clue about their respective cultures.…

One hot September day at around one o’clock, my boyfriend, Jonathan and I were strolling around the city of Downey, searching for a delicious place to have lunch. We then made the decision to grub at In n’ Out. As we walked down Firestone, I noticed an elderly man attempting to illegally cross the street. I was beginning to become concerned for him because the traffic was heavy, and I didn’t want him to get hurt. The man appeared to be about “5””4”, in his late 40’s, pale brown skin, and possibly weighed 150 lbs. He was dressed in semi blue jeans, forest green t-shirt, and a beige jacket. It was easy to assume that the man may have been a mechanic by looking at how grimy his clothing was, it looked as if he had repaired vehicles all morning, but shortly after, it was clear that he wasn’t a mechanic. He finally made his way to the other side of the road, and in a Spanish, yet in an embarrassed voice, he exclaimed, “ Excuse me!” When I turned toward him he said, “ Can you please help me? I don’t know how to speak English, and I was hoping you could translate for me. See I just crossed the border a few days ago, and I am willing to work for three meals a day. Can you ask the owner of this near by hotel, if I can work, even clean, for three meals a day?’’ Luckily, because of my Hispanic background, I was able to comprehend everything he said. I looked at my boyfriend, and insisted that we help this needy immigrated man. I walked up to the cramped front office of Rick’s hotel. The man at the front desk then stood and offered his assistance. By then I had began asking the receptionist if there was anyway this unfortunate man could work around the hotel as a custodian in exchange for three meals a day. The receptionist then looked at me with an unrepentant face, and said, “ No can do.” My heart sank…

I have never watched a concert not holding in concert hall before, this concert was held at outdoor in the Happy Valley Racecourse Recreation Ground. There were large screens projecting the stage for the audience at the back, everyone were excited and looking forward to the concert. The atmosphere of the venue was good.…
