Concert Report I
The concert I attended was a classic music performed by the Chamber Orchestra. They presented their winter concert. It started at 8 pm at University of California San Diego and lasted about an hour and half. The concert was conducted by David Medine. He is a violinist, conductor, music critic, experimental musician and computer music researcher from Tucson, Arizona. The instruments played were a family of violin, viola, violin cello, contrabass, flute, Oboe, Clarinet, horn and trumpet. I will be discussing the elements of music which are Sound, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm and Growth based on one movement of the music. I. MATERIALS OF MUSIC 1. SOUND

The sound of this piece had both monophonic and polyphonic texture. Indeed, they first began by a monophonic texture during a couple of seconds. The same notes were performed and at around 16 seconds, a second voice came and the texture became a polyphonic texture. By then, a third voice joined the first and second voice. According the timbre of the sound, the violinists were the first on scene and they started with a dark tone color. Then, the tone became bright and gay.

1. HARMONY

The sound of the instruments was coherent so it was easy to appreciate the ensemble. We could distinguish some instruments when they were playing. Every performer was playing in consonance so the music was perceived clearly with an easy understanding.

2. MELODY

The distance between the notes was mainly medium but sometimes, we could discern a narrow distance between the notes. The change of range happened periodically and made the movement understandable. In addition, the shape of the music went up and down and during a certain period of time, that was the opposite. The movement of this performance had two essential parts. The first section was a little confusing because it seemed like every instruments were playing at the same time. Second, it

All of them had a good posture, and a good tone. However, I suggest that they could have fewer violins, or more of other instruments. The group played ten pieces throughout the concert. The pieces were the Introduction and Tarantella by Pablo Sarasate, Pezzo Capriccioso Op. 62 by Peter Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto in D major by Johannes Brahms, Barcarolle in F major by Fryderyk Chopin, Piano Concerto no.2 in F major by Fryderyk Chopin, Clarinet Concerto no.1, in F by Carl Maria von Weber, Caprice no.24 in A minor by Niccolo Paganini, Vioiln Concerto no.2 by Henryk Wieniawski, Etude-Tableauz Op. 39 no.9 by Sergei Rachmaninov and Piano Converto no.3 in C minor by Ludwig van…

The articulation of this orchestra was lively used. In the first repertoire of concert, Totentanz, there were a lot of dissonance and dynamic contrast that required high definition of articulation. Totentanz is a piece that shows the composer’s fascination with death. You can actually realize this from the title because the direct translation of Totentanz is the Dance of Death. What I am really surprised by the orchestra’s articulation is when the orchestra used bowing technique called the col legno. At the appropriate moment when the piece seemed like describing an image of hell, col legno in the string section sounded like clanking bones. This articulation gave me a big goosebumps and made me scared of the piece until the last cadence of the piece. The orchestra appropriately dramatize articulation to leave a big emotion in audiences’…

The most noteworthy parts of the song were the beat of the drums and the sounds brought by string and flute-like instruments. Although I was at first skeptical, all the different instruments were able melt together to create a song that was ominous and intriguing, yet playful. The song was driving in some parts, while other parts were slower and quieter so that the drums were the focal point. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the performance was the mix of the classical instruments with the tribal ones. Violins, flutes, and bongos…

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a play that was performed in the University of Michigan-Flint theatre on Saturday (April 2, 2016). This play is based on previous projects, including “Super,” “Why I hate Florida” and “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E.” Shortly, the characters are six bright middle school students, who compete not only for the first place, but also for their own self-esteem, love and care. Through this spelling competition, they fight their anxiety and self-centeredness. Also, they explore their innate vulnerability and compassion. Eventually, they realize that winning is not necessarily a source of happiness, but sometimes losing is better and losing might create a winner.…

Out of the hand-drummers performance all of the pieces sounded the similar to me but with slight difference with the rhythm, because most of the piece played by them were only about two minutes long at the longest, while some of the shorter ones only lasted about forty five seconds. All of the pieces played at the same volume and most of the pieces were polyphonic and had repetition, I know all of this sounds really negative but I have never heard a professional drummer ensemble so I did not what is good and bad about their performance. The Wind ensemble on the other hand was all other the place the music they played, The Nocturne, Southern hymn, and part of the tribute piece to Gershwin were all more Andante or Adagio, while Burn, Military escort march, El Camino real, and Drums of Saamis were all upbeat and Allegro or Presto. All of the pieces played were polyphonic with dynamic changes throughout the piece, variation and repetition throughout the pieces, they had regular rhythm, and always were in consonance with the other notes that were being played at the same…

The concert started off by the Marysburg Youth Choir (the choir I was involved with) handing out candles to all the adults in the audience. Next, all the choirs sang O Come All Ye Faithful, along with the hand bells. And then the Marysburg Choir sang Dance into the night, which took my breath away on how well put together it was. Next from the same choir was Come and See. Following that was an instrumental trio- oboe, bassoon and piano playing O Come, O Come Emmanuel. And then came my groups turn. First, we sang the song When A Child Is Born, which I got lots of practice on because of choir here at HCI. And then we sang Glory to the Lamb, which was fabulous. Next, the hand bells and the organ played the song An English Christmas which was very well put together. Next was Be Still My Soul performed by the Mens Choir and the bassoon. Then came Ding Dong Merrily on High, by the hand bells, oboe and bassoon. Then came The First Nowell snag by all the choirs. Then, Joy to the World, which included all the instruments as well.…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

The first song played was Pippin. At the beginning of the song not everyone was playing the same dynamic, but when it got to the first transition everyone was balanced. After there was a new melody, there were occasional parts when one section stood out more. Those sections eventually fixed their dynamic. The next dynamic that could have been fixed was, the trumpets could have played a little bit quieter whenever they made a new entrance. After a few measures, they did play quieter and were balanced. When the band played what sounded like a waltz, no sections stood out and all of them played at an equal volume. In the end, the song was played well and was balanced.…

What really pleased me about this performance was the large organ. I have never seen such a musical instrument like that one before in person. The performance was very loud, but the music they played was soothing. It was pleasing to me that they played instruments other than the organ. They also played an oboe, which is part of the woodwinds instrument family, and the trumpet, which is part of the brass instrument family. All of the musicians were very talented, and you could tell they have been producing and practicing music for many years. I liked how the performers made smooth transitions and that each song break was short.…

First on the program was Grand Quartet in E Minor by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832). Kuhlau was a concert pianist and a composer of the Danish opera; he composed over 200 works in his lifetime. The first work the ensemble preformed was Andante Maestoso, the intro to the song was very soft, and it had a sense of a nature vibe to the melody. The pitch then proceeded to escaladed higher; at points during the work it was changing from all four flutes playing in unison to just one stand out flute and the rest in a base beat. I really enjoyed the change of pace throughout the song and how one flute stood out showed off that person’s unique set of skills that maybe differs them from the rest of the ensemble. The work ended in a very fast paced rhythm and there was no insinuation that the work was going to end because there was no build up to the finale of the work. I really enjoyed this piece but the only down fall was it was very long and none of the other songs in the ensemble were nearly that long.…

Before the contemptuous contemporary ensemble began playing the first song, they explained that it would be played and performed using a multiphonic technique with the saxophone. This was explained before the group began playing to get some background information on the composer and how the song would be played. The piece started with the dynamics of the song being loud or forte. The percussion began with a repeated beat and then a loud, long hold note of the saxophone. In between the playing of the drums and saxophone there was a stroke of sound by the cymbal. As this continued the tempo was andante. Then it would change again from andante to Allegro. There were some parts of the song that would sound more alive and it had a consonance feel,…

Last month, on Friday, January, 30, 2015, at 7:30 in the evening my friends and I attended a concert, Wind Symphony, in downtown Toronto. It was at the Edward Johnson Building McMilan Theatre, 80 Queens Park. The concert was conducted by the University of Toronto band and the conductor was Tony Gomes. The two musicians that played my instrument were Brian Burell, and Caleb Michalski. The layout is that there were clarinets in the front to the left and the flutes were at the front to the right. There were a lot of clarinets and flutes! Whereas, in our Beginner band class, the location is opposite. Also, behind the clarinets were the trumpets. In comparison, the trumpets weren't as many as clarinets because the tone and volume are much stronger and effective with less people. Beside the trumpet players were the trombone players. To the far right in the back were the euphoniums/baritones and tuba. There were 2 euphonium players and 1 tuba player. Lastly, all along the back of the stage were the percussionists. There were many different kinds of percussion such as tenor drums, sticks, harp, piano, and many more. The compositions of many instruments made the concert very harmonic.…

The choir all kept the tempo of the songs and the conductor never had to speed up or slow down, because they were all together. This made the songs more professionally sounding and it separated the style of the songs from one another. When everyone was singing together, their diction was perfect and it sounded a lot better than it would have if they were all pronouncing the words differently, especially in the Latin songs. Even though all of the songs had many different sections, everyone blended together. As a result, the music was very smooth and flowed well. During some of the performances, the choir got very loud to show emotion and feeling. Even so, every section was balanced, not one of them stuck out except for when they were supposed to. The choir sounded very advanced because they all sang together very…
