For my fourth concert report I attended the University of Florida Flute Ensemble Concert, on Tuesday April 16th, 2013 at 7:30pm in the Music Building Room 101. There were four main flutists and one composer but later in the concert during the last two works the whole flute studio was included. The four main flute students were Amy Adams, Margaret Chou, Kelsey Greene and Andy Huang. I have attended another concert in this room but was surprised to see about double the number of people since the last concert and was excited to see the show. The auditorium was small but I enjoyed that because it was quaint and made me feel more comfortable because there was not that many people there and it was more of an intimate setting. Admission to the ensemble was free which was a benefit to the people in attendance so they could enjoy of little bit of music for no cost. First on the program was Grand Quartet in E Minor by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832). Kuhlau was a concert pianist and a composer of the Danish opera; he composed over 200 works in his lifetime. The first work the ensemble preformed was Andante Maestoso, the intro to the song was very soft, and it had a sense of a nature vibe to the melody. The pitch then proceeded to escaladed higher; at points during the work it was changing from all four flutes playing in unison to just one stand out flute and the rest in a base beat. I really enjoyed the change of pace throughout the song and how one flute stood out showed off that person’s unique set of skills that maybe differs them from the rest of the ensemble. The work ended in a very fast paced rhythm and there was no insinuation that the work was going to end because there was no build up to the finale of the work. I really enjoyed this piece but the only down fall was it was very long and none of the other songs in the ensemble were nearly that long. The second work of the ensemble was a collection of four different separate pieces all by the same composer
