Compare And Contrast Samson And Casey
Samson and Casey were two foolish men who made bad decisions. God gave Samson strength beyond human ability as long as he followed Gods rules, but Samson could not put aside his arrogance and lust in order to keep his gift. So God took his gift away and in the end Samson paid with his life. Casey was talented at baseball but his pride led him to miss a great opportunity which made people revaluate how great he actually was. They were both over confident which lead to their downfall. Solomon warned men about this very sin because he knew what damage it could do. “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) The most disappointing component of both their actions was the fact that they had others depending on them. If their pride had not gotten in the way then they could have accomplished something great. They let people down and by their actions, displayed cowardice. …show more content…
Samson had direct orders from God about how he must live. When he let his pride overcome him, he was in direct disobedience with God. Casey, however, was not disobeying anyone. John McCarthy and Mark Wolfson from the University of Minnesota collected data emphasizing on three distinct features that facilitated the mobilization of resources. These three features are strategy, agency, and organizational structure. Agency is related to the mobilization of volunteer labor and membership. Here McCarthy and Wolfson use this term to describe it as “the sheer amount of effort activists invest in collective action rather than its caliber” (McCarthy and Wolfson p. 1071). Through this concept of agency, they expected the more the organizations put their effort in their movement, the more the resources are mobilized. Strategy is related with the mobilization of membership based on the emphasis on victim services. It has been viewed by previous scholars as the most important feature in the success of the organizations’ movement against drunk driving.…

As Holden superior in age to Phoebe, she is clearly the more mature person in state of mind. Phoebe tries to be the best that she can be in school, achieving A’s on almost everything she does, while Holden doesn’t apply himself in anything but English class. One thing that they have in common is the knowledge to have a good conversation, something that most people don’t have. With their many differences, Holden still admires Phoebe and wishes to talk to her whenever he can, because she is about the only person that is willing to talk to a crazy person.…

In the short story “A&P”, John Updike makes the character Sammy fail in the end unlike a typical hero to show how heroes are irrelevant in society. When Sammy announces that he quits, he hopes the girls are watching and thinks of himself as “their unsuspected hero” (4). In Sammy’s eyes, he is a hero to the girls because he is the one standing up to the dragon and saving the three princesses from his wrath. He is doing the noble thing by quitting his job and fighting the dragon so the princesses can retain their honor. He wants the princesses to watch him do it and acknowledge his heroics. However, when he goes outside to look for the girls, he finds that “they’re gone, of course” (5). Sammy is the girls’ hero but they left without him. The…

In the poem “Casey at the Bat” and the story “David and Goliath,” a comparison of David and Casey shows differences and similarities. The first identical trait is that David and Casey have huge problems. “Casey at the Bat” says,”The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play,” and in “David and Goliath” the story says “Saul and his men heard what Goliath said, but they were so frightened that they couldn’t do a thing.” Both stories explained that both of the characters the characters had big problems, Casey’s was that his team was losing, and David’s was that there was a enormous giant that the army had to fight. The second similarity is that they were both being relied on. “David and Goliath” says that “Choose your best…

Sammy stood up for the three girls that Lengel threw out of the A+P. After Lengel told the girls to leave, Sammy could have sat down and kept his mouth shut, but he said "You didn't have to embarrass them," (Updike). This then escalated into an argument between Sammy and Lengel which caused Sammy to quit his job because Lengel disrespected the girls. Now answer me this, why would Sammy quit his job if he wasn't standing up for the girls and being heroic? Sammy is considered heroic not only because he stood up for the girls, but also because he stood up against Lengel.…

Everyday, stereotype is used in the society. Sometimes, when people use stereotype on other people, they don’t even recognize it because it’s so common and is ignored by the society. It’s a way to judge people through their common believes based on ethnicity, gender, skin color, appearance and language of the people who are being judged. For example, when people see a Vietnamese woman in her 20’s, 30’s and 40’s just migrated to America, they would assume that she will be working in a nail salon and flirt with some rich guys to get married with. Being stereotype is difficult deal with, and it’s really offended and hurtful. “The Myth of the Latin woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria” by Judith Ortiz Cofer and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan share some common and different stereotypes that they had to go through. In the story “The Myth of the Latin Woman: I just met a Girl Named Maria”, Judith Cofer wrote about her experiences being stereotyped as a Latin woman. In “Mother Tongue,” Amy shared her personal experiences being stereotyped with her language’s barrier. Even though the two female authors shared the similarity for being stereotyped by the society, they faced different situations on the way they were stereotyped.…
