Compare And Contrast Rainsford Vs Zaroff
When you first read the most dangerous game you are automatically faced with the question of the two men’s humanity. Are they barbarians? Are they completely sane? The main question is, are either of them civilized? When you think about it Sanger Rainsford is clearly more civilized compared to General Zaroff. I know this because he is with the common folk, he can tell that killing is immoral, and acts in a mature respectful way.
When you picture someone uncivilized you often link immaturity, lack of wealth, non polite, showing no concern for others, or the proper way to behave. They have the mind frame of a child and display it through their actions. A child is excused because they don’t know any better, but an adult who does and chooses not to is a different story. When we first meet Rainsford he is having a nice time with his friends on a yacht. We can infer that he came from a port filled with people and is returning back to those people. Zaroff might have started living in a town, but he doesn’t plan on returning. Instead, he wishes to live on an island with nothing, but Ivan, his dogs, and random prisoners. When you look up the definition of civilized you get “bring (a place or people) to a stage

Even if you asked a child about killing a human they see it as a bad thing. Why? Because, they have been taught that it is wrong, and unsound. Zaroff disregards this and treats the humans he murders as a simple game like he were playing checkers. Zaroff is so uncivilized and twisted that he doesn’t even see as murder. It is just a game to him. If he had lived in a regular town and tried committing the acts he does on the island people would certainly be after him. So, he lives on an island. I think, deep down, he knows that what he is doing is wrong, but he doesn’t want to see that so he calls it a game. By calling it a game it can feel morally safe to

Alternate Ending to “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford finished making his Burmese tiger trap and hid behind a charred tree stump. He heard a cry and ran forward. There in the pit lay one of Zaroff’s dogs. Hanging on to the edge of the pit hung Zaroff himself. “Congratulations Rainsford.…

Rainsford for a second, assuming that a single part of his web of deceit is true, we would find several plot holes. Rainsford also claims that Zaroff killed men because he was bored with killing animals, which could very well be Rainsford’s actual psychological state, but framed on Zaroff. Zaroff promised Rainsford freedom if he survived three nights without being killed, and Rainsford survived, but didn’t give Zaroff a chance to send him to freedom. Justice on murder is based on whether the murder was necessary, but this murder was obviously not necessary due to the end of the 3 night limit. Some may say it was self defense, but there is no real proof that Zaroff hunted men besides Rainsford’s words, which only words are not reasonable proof. In the words of Lois McMaster Bujold, “The dead cannot cry out for justice. It is a duty of the living to do so for them.” The only real proof there is are the fingerprints on the knife that slew Ivan and that Rainsford killed…

Zaroff directly states, “ I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships-lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels- a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than a score of them.”(Richard Connell 5) The general also explains to Rainsford how this is the only worthy opponent left that still intrigues him and gives him the thrill of the hunt. Mainly because they are the only quarry that can have reason versus the other quarries who only have instinct. Consequently Rainsford was the next prey the general had in mind. Zaroff says that, “ Instinct is no match for reason.”(Richard Connell 5) The final way that the reader can analyze Zaroff’s thrill seeking trait is his ability to understand his limits, and know that a hunt is only exciting if it’s prey is a contest to his abilities. This can be inferred in the story when Zaroff tracked Rainsford through the forest in the dark, and when he did find Rainsford, he simply turned and walked away with his smile on his face. The reader could infer and Rainsford said, “The general was playing with him! The general was saving him for another day's sport.”(Richard Connell 10) This shows the reader that killing his own prey is of no enjoyment to Zaroff unless it is a challenge. This is why Zaroff did not kill Rainsford the first time, because he is not…

He is competitive when he jumped into the sea so General Zaroff thought he was dead. Then Rainsford swam to the shore, went back to the house, and hid in General Zaroff’s room so he could make sure that he won. He was not going to let General Zaroff win. “Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated… then he leaped far out into the sea. A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bedroom was standing there. “Rainsford!” screamed the general. “How in Gods name did you get here?” “Swam,” said Rainsford...The general sucked in his breath and smiled. “I congratulate you,” he said. “You have won the game” (Connell 80). This part shows that Rainsford is competitive because he jumped out into the sea to make it seem like he was dead. Then he went back to the house of the man that was trying to kill him, just to tell the man that he had won the game. Sanger Rainsford is intelligent, brave, and competitive in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” because he is outsmarting one of the best hunters around. Rainsford is also beating General Zaroff at his own game,…

Once the hunter becomes the hunted, everything is put into a new perspective. Rainsford from the fictitious short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and Eckels from the science fiction “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury are connected in an almost similar fashion that shows how people can react differently to a problem. Even though their stories are completely different, they are both on a quest to ultimately find self-knowledge. Rainsford and Eckels would react differently under difficult situations because of their different attitudes while dealing with the problem, their ability to perceive their surroundings,…

    General Zaroff Morals

In this story, General Zaroff doesn't realize that what he is doing is wrong. What he is doing is killing people, and he seems to think it is the same as hunting normal animals. He got “bored” of normal animals, because they couldn't reason with him. Humans give him a more exciting hunting experience, according to him. Zaroff doesn’t understand that it is wrong to kill humans, and he shows this misunderstanding when he says “There is one [animal] that can [reason]” and Rainsford says back “But you can’t mean… I can’t believe you are serious”, To this Zaroff replies: “Why should I not be serious? I am speaking of hunting... I had to invent a new animal to hunt...I found one... it supplies me with the most exciting hunting... the value of human…

Once Zaroff revealed what his “most dangerous game” was, he attempted to justify his murderous hobby by arguing that, “‘I am strong...If I wish to hunt why should I not,’”(10). Here, Zaroff is committing a standard mistake; he does something because he can, but morally should not. The only way he actually justifies his “game” is by saying that it is diverting and provides a challenge for him. The belief that he is all-powerful blinds him from the fact that since he has frequently perpetrated against innocent humans, he will have to pay for his actions. Furthermore, Zaroff concluded that Rainsford had perished, but he is later proven wrong. As an illustration, “A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there… ‘I congratulate you’... ‘You have won the game,’”(18). Connell uses this event to affirm that Zaroff had indeed been hunted all along. Although he did not realize it, Zaroff was gradually falling prey to Rainsford. The American was constantly outsmarting him and made numerous attempts on his life. Throughout the story Rainsford was gaining leverage; it is clear he won because Zaroff was cocky and ignorant of his surroundings. In Zaroff’s case, the very thing that made him powerful debilitated…

In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” General Zaroff displays intelligence, an evil mind, and also arrogance. Zaroff seems like a civilized human being but when we learn that he hunts people on his island for entertainment, we see that he is really nothing less than a monster. He is portrayed as vicious to readers by the way he looks, what he says, and what Rainsford says to him.…

Although many believe Rainsford is the dominant hunter because he killed Zaroff, it’s clear that Zaroff is the better hunter. It’s shown throughout the story, how he started hunting at the age of 10, how he let Rainsford live because he wanted to keep playing the so called “game”. These is only some of the evidence that proves Zaroff’s dominance over Rainsford.…

In the beginning of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford is an avid hunter, feeling man is superior to animals, that his prey has no feelings, and that hunting in general is just a game. He thinks that the world is divided between the hunter and the hunted. Rainsford is an American hunter of world renown, and is immediately recognized by General Zaroff as an author of a book on hunting Snow Leopards in Tibet. (Connell, 7) While they both share an interest in hunting, Rainsford believes Zaroff’s newly defined sport to be brutal and Zaroff himself to be a murderer in the beginning of the story. Even with his service in the military, he is unable to consider what Zaroff is doing…

A second reason why Rainsford would have annihilated Zaroff is because he wanted to escape the island forever. On the contrary, some people still might think that Rainsford would want to stay because in the very end, he slept in Zaroff’s bedroom and decided that “he had never slept in a better bed” (Connell 31). That tells that now Rainsford could possibly want to remain on the island and live out his life in Zaroff’s huge, comfortable, island mansion.…

General Zaroff constantly shows throughout, whether it is in what he says, or the actions he portrays, that he has a very unstable mind and is somewhat of a psycho. For example, towards the end of the lengthy conversation between General Zaroff and Rainsford, General Zaroff says, “I hunt the scum of the earth- sailors from tramp ships, lascars, blacks, chinese, and mongrels.” (pg. 26) This quote shows that General Zaroff thinks of murder as a game and has no remorse in killing humans of any type. This quote also reveals that “hunting” and killing humans is a hobby for General Zaroff and is taken very lightly by him. Also, during their conversation General Zaroff stated, “This is why I use them. It gives me pleasure.…

On the surface General Zaroff’s character seems very realistic; a highly decorated military man with wealth, refinement, and a taste for high end goods. However, below the surface Richard Connell’s depiction of General Zaroff is unrealistic. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” Connell portrays the General as a savage who devalues human life. The General has lost touch with reality as a whole because he has rationalized his hunting of humans.…
