Rainsford is shown to be intelligent in the story when he climbed into a big tree to sleep. He chose the tree because he needed to stay away from General Zaroff. “A big tree with outspread branches was nearby… he climbed up into the crotch and stretched out on one of the broad limbs, after a fashion, rested” (Connell 75). This quote shows that Rainsford is intelligent because during this part, he is climbing into a tree to try and stay hidden from General Zaroff. Then Rainsford swam to the shore, went back to the house, and hid in General Zaroff’s room so he could make sure that he won.
