Rainsford Civilized Analysis
Are we civilized as people? Or do we think or act like we are civilized? Evidence from the story shows that zaroff considers himself civilized, Rainsford considers Zaroff civilized and Rainsford considers himself civilized.
First Zaroff makes Rainsford think they are civilized by saying “We do our best to preserve the amenities of civilization here...Do you think the champagne has suffered from it’s long ocean trip? (pg.45)This makes Rainsford think that he has products and food shipped to the Island regularly and more people than him are civilized there.Zaroff finds more than one way to trick Rainsford. Zaroff was able to do this by being so braggart about what he has. He also brags about what kinds of hunts are available.And about how good

    How did Sanger Rainsford successfully outsmart General Zaroff in the manhunt? In “The Most Dangerous Game” there are multiple ways Rainsford outsmarts Zaroff but there are three main ways, that are my favorite. The first trap that Rainsford made to get Zaroff is a Malay man catcher. Then Rainsford sets a second trap that is called the Burmese Tiger pit that killed one of Zaroff's best dogs.     Rainsford used reason to survive General Zaroffs incredible hunting skills. First, when he was let put to run for his life and hide he used reason and started “recalling…all the dodges of the fox” (Connell, 10) He ran loops and reran the trails to confuse Zaroff just like the fox did while he was hunting.     When Rainsford first meets Zaroff, Zaroff is courteous, hospitable, and honorable; he takes Rainsford in, gives him clothes, dinner, wine, and a place to stay.     Rainsford is a very tough person both mentally and physically. Rainsford shows his physical toughness by swimming to Ship-Trap Island. The reason why Rainsford even met Zaroff is because he fell off a yacht when he dropped his cigar and stumbled off of the boat. He was nervous so he just decided to swim until he got to land and then he remembered “A certain cool-headedness had come to him: it was not the first time he had been in a tight place.”(15). Rainsford got all the way to Ship-Trap Island and he found Zaroff’s house and that is how they met. Rainsford also shows toughness by not giving up on going through the forest, “Rainsford had fought his way through the bush for two hours: “I must keep my nerve”, he said through tight teeth.” (26). This situation would take a lot of mental toughness because anyone could just have a nervous breakdown because they could die and it takes physical toughness because you could get cut up from walking through the forest for two hours.
